A GM's Travels - Worst2First (Take 2) -- OOTP X
I thought that I would try this again, since my first try went belly up, and hopefully I can do a little moving instead of doing a Connie Mack impression and being the GM/MGR of the Red Sox.
I will, however, start again with the 1907 Boston Red Sox because: 1) They had the worst winning percentage in the majors in 1906 2) It's the beginning of the career of one of the greatest center fielders in Red Sox history, Tris Speaker. Code:
Year Team Record (Place) Score Postseason Results ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1907 Boston (A) 72-82 (7th) 24 -- 1908 Boston (A) 95-59 (1st) 90 Lost WS to Giants, 4-1 1909 Boston (A) 84-70 (3rd) 43 -- 1910 Boston (A) 102-52 (1st) 100 Lost WS to Pirates, 4-3 Last edited by doncoryell; 02-26-2011 at 11:55 PM. |

Re: A GM's Travels - Worst2First (Take 2)
January 1, 1907
After having the worst record in the majors last season, the Boston Red Sox have hired me to be their new GM. The first order of business was the firing of the scouting director(8 scouting MLB talent, 8 scouting amateur talent). I found a scout that was much better at scouting major league and amateur talent (12/11) and decided that he would be a better choice for my considering that I want to build the team through the draft. I also made several changes to the in-game strategy. I am not a big fan of the sacrifice bunt nor the hit and run, so they were changed. I know that this is going against conventional thoughts but things need to be changed. |

Re: A GM's Travels - Worst2First (Take 2)
We are nearing opening day and I received a pair of trade proposals.
The Cleveland Naps offered center fielder Harry Bay for pitcher Jesse Tannehill. That trade was accepted. The New York Highlanders offered catcher Deacon McGuire for pitcher Joe Harris. Although Joe Harris was a decent hard thrower (90-92 mph fastball), the trade was accepted. Our starting rotation looks like this. 1) Cy Young 2) George Winter 3) Ralph Glaze 4) Tex Pruiett Lineup vs RHP 1) Harry Bay, cf 2) Hobe Ferris, 2b 3) Myron Grimshaw, rf 4) Deacon McGuire, c 5) Bob Unglaub, 1b 6) Freddy Parent, ss 7) Harry Lord, 3b 8) Chet Chadbourne, lf Lineup vs LHP 1) Harry Bay, cf 2) Hobe Ferris, 2b 3) Myron Grimshaw, rf 4) Deacon McGuire, c 5) Bob Unglaub, 1b 6) Freddy Parent, ss 7) Harry Lord, 3b 8) Chet Chadbourne, lf The owner called me to wish us good luck in the upcoming season and said that he expects the team to have a winning record. |

Re: A GM's Travels - Worst2First (Take 2)
May 1, 1907
The team went 5-5 over the last 10 games and we finished 7-10 for our opening month. Not too bad but we can do better. Myron Grimshaw is off to a good start, putting up .306-1-6 numbers. Bob Unglaub drove in 7 runs to lead the team and provided support. On the other side of the diamond, George Winter is 3-1 with an ERA of 1.80 and a WHIP of 0.86 to lead the team. Cy Young was the only other multiple winning pitcher during April. He went 2-3 with an ERA of 2.09 and a WHIP of 0.88. Code:

Re: A GM's Travels - Worst2First (Take 2)
June 1, 1907
Well, we ended May on a 4-6 run just to get the month's record to 10-17, not very good. That's the bad news. The good news is that our neighbors, the Boston Doves, had center fielder Ginger Beaumont on the trading block and they were willing to take pitcher Tex Pruiett for him. Harry Bay will move over to left field, for the weak hitting Chet Chadbourne and Frank Oberlin will take over for Pruiett in our starting rotation. Shortstop Freddy Parent (.297-0-12) led the team last month, showing how much we needed another bat. Hobe Ferris and Harry Lord chipped in with 12 RBIs each, with Chet Chadbourne driving in 11 and backup first baseman Buck Freeman driving in 10 to help the cause. On the other side of the diamond, Ralph Glaze went 4-3 last month with an ERA of 2.67 and was the winningest pitcher for us. George Winter (2-5, 1.76 ERA) and Cy Young (2-3, 2.25 ERA) both continued to pitch well but didn't get much in run support. Code:

Re: A GM's Travels - Worst2First (Take 2)
July 1, 1907
We had a pretty good June, although it was only 12-13 after ending the month going 6-4. We are now tied for 7th instead of 8th. Starting shortstop Freddy Parent came in whining about not wanting to be here any more because we weren't winning. He said that he could help a contender and asked to be traded, so I sent him off to the contending (for last place) St.Louis Cardinals, who are in 7th place. That'll teach him for being a whiner. I received infielders Bobby Byrne and Ed Holly for him. Ginger Beaumont came over as advertised, leading the team with .348-2-13 for the month. Helping him out was Deacon McGuire (.325-0-11), Bob Unlgaub (.296-0-12) and Myron Grimshaw (.298-0-8). On the other side of the diamond, Cy Young was our pitching star last month, going 5-2 with an ERA of 2.29 in 63 innings. Ralph Glaze was 3-3 with an ERA of 2.53 and Frank Oberlin was 2-1 with an ERA of 2.91 in 34 innings during his first month in the rotation. I wish that we could be doing better, but we are a miserable 11-21 (.344) on the road. Code:
