Re: The Bird is the Word- A Baltimore Orioles MLB 11 The Show Franchise

I felt like i had to do something. When i sim games we dont score many runs even when i play i dont score many and i tested the waters and the dodgers interest was fun in guthrie and i felt i had to make the trade at the sacrifice of guthrie, because i get to bring britton up now and im pretty excited to pitch with the kid.

League Leaders

Hitters

Miguel Cabrera and Derrek Lee are fighting it out in the triple crown categories. Both are also the runaway candidates fro MVP. In the NL its a toss up at every stat but the tried and true players are starting to shine through.

Pitchers

The AL Brian Matusz is obviously dominating. The only major stat he doesn't lead is strikeouts, but he is third. Valverde is leading all of the MLB with 22 saves. The NL like with the hitters is basically random. There are some stalwarts on the list but a lot of it is young guys making a name for themselves.

MLB Standings

American League

The AL is close in two of the three divisions. The AL East is shaping up to be a great race for the rest of the year. It also looks like the Wild Card will come out of the East. The Central is also a three team race. The West also looks like it's over unless the A's fall apart drastically.

National League

The NL looks like its down to five teams or so. The East is down two teams Philly and Atlanta. The Giants are starting to run away with the West. Though Padres have started to make a run though. The Central is close. Cincy has the lead but Pittsburgh has started to bounce back after a rough patch.

Prediction

Even though Toronto is fifth in the AL East they are not to be taken lightly. They have suffered many injuries this year and because of that they have been a scratch and claw victories type of team. Game 3 is the big game in the series because it is Zach Britton's debut versus Dustin McGowan who is pitching very well this year. Duchscherer should win his matchup in game one and Carlos Villanueva has the advantage in game two. Zach Britton could be pitching for the series win, which is even more added pressure on the youngster. The good thing is that he is making his debut at home. I think The O's win two of the three and the second win will be Britton's debut.

Baltimore has the outright lead in the division for the first time in a month. They have made a big trade and we'll see if their pitching dominance continues with the Rookie Zach Britton in the rotation. They host Toronto who lost two of three, for the three game weekend set. The Yankees got swept by Oakland and now travel to LA to face the Angels for three. Oakland now travels to Boston for three games. The Red Sox beat the White Sox 2-1 in their series. Tampa went 2-1 versus Texas and now host Seattle for a four game set.

Game 1

O's Keep Early Lead Earn W

Baltimore jumped on Zach Stewart quickly. The scored four runs in the first off a series of doubles from Derrek Lee, Vlad and Andre Ethier. In the third they added two more runs making the score 6-0. After Toronto got one in the seventh, Catcher Matt Wieters hit a three run shot in the bottom of the inning giving them a 9-1 lead. After a communication error Duchscherer came out for the eighth and walked the first batter. When Showalter saw what happened he pulled Duchscherer and brought in Mark Hendrickson for some work. Hendrickson gave up a two run homer in the eighth and the ninth. In the ninth Kevin Gregg closed out the last two outs vs his old team. The runs were luckily meaningless for the outcome of the game. It was nice to see another pitcher other than Gonzalez perform with a little pressure on him late. Duchscherer pitched very well again and the team is please by the way how he has pitched all year.

JJ Hardy hit a three run homer in the fourth inning to give the O's 4-0 lead. They wouldn't need anymore runs but they got more. After Troy Patton went seven innings and only giving up one run, a solo homer by Juan Rivera the O's scored two more in the bottom of the eighth after a two run homer off of the bat of Andre Ethier. Chad Qualls came in the eighth inning and shut it down. In the ninth with two outs he gave up two runs. The second run was a Jose Batista solo homer. Mike Gonzalez came in the game with a 6-3 lead with two outs. He got the final out and earned the save. Until Hardy's fourth inning homer both teams were held in check by the pitching. Troy Patton went seven strong giving up one run on five hits, walking one and striking out three. He improved to 5-4 on the year.

Game 3

Britton Wins Debut, Completes Sweep

The most anticipated debut in years for a Baltimore pitcher could have gone any better for young Zach Britton. He pitched seven good innings of ball with seven hits, one walk, and five strikeouts. He didn't allow a run and he had to get out of a few jams and he did it like a vet by either striking out the batter or forcing a double play induced ground ball. The O's scored in the fourth and fifth innings giving them a 2-0 lead. Britton started to show fatigue at the end of the seventh inning. In the eighth Manny Delcarmen earned his fifth hold of the year even though he led off the inning with a hit and a walk and proceeded to get the next three outs. Mike Gonzalez closed down the ninth with two strikeouts and a ground out. "It was pressure packed at the end of the game, but we pulled it out. Im proud of the relievers and for Zach tonight the pitchers won us this game" Showalter added
This is the third sweep of the year for the Orioles. The first one was the opening series against the Rays and last month they swept the Mariners. The Orioles welcome the A's for a three game set.

Prediction
Oakland is still hot but so is Baltimore. I wouldn't be shocked to see Oakland win the series. I think the pitching match ups are even and Oakland's offense is getting better. The way both teams are playing this is also a potential playoff match up. With the numbers as close as they are, I will take Baltimore to win two of the three games.

Tampa Bay Rays34275.5303293

After the sweep of Toronto the Orioles host the A's for three games. Those Blue Jays fly to KC for a four game set. Tampa also swept the Mariners to take over the third spot. They now travel to LA for a three game series versus the Angels. New York beat the Angels 2-1 in their series and now face rival Boston for a three game set. Boston is coming off a 1-2 series against Oakland.

Trade News
Boston trades RP Bobby Jenks to St. Louis SP Jaime Garcia
- Time will tell if the move will help either team. St. Louis is at the bottom of their division and Boston just sunk to the fourth place position in the tough AL East.

Baltimore Draft Recap
Baltimore had the fourth pick in the draft, Because of free agent signings they had a 1st,4th and 5th round picks. With the fourth overall pick in the first round the O's selected 1B Eduardo Manzanillo. Manzanillo is a 19 year old left handed power hitting 1B. He isn't big at 5'11" 194 lbs. but he has a lot of raw power and upside. In the fourth round the O's selected 20 year old right handed hitting catcher Robert Cardwell. He doesn't have a bunch of upside but the organization thinks highly of the kid. He could easily be a career minor leaguer but he could also be a good backup catcher. Their last pick is the 18 year old lefty LF John Sampson. He is very rough but he is a decent hitter. He wont burn anyone with speed. But it's not far fetched to think that he may make it as a DH in the MLB in the future. That future could be 7/8 years down the road but he could make it.
