No injuries for either club

Prediction

This is a battle of two of the best teams in the AL right now. They happen to also play in the same division. Boston has improved dramatically since their slow start this year. Coincidentally they started to get on track by by taking two of three from the O's in Baltimore in late April. There is no advantage on the mound with the starters. Both games feature great pitching matchups. Matusz versus Beckett in game one and Arrieta - Buchholz game two. At the plate each team is one and two in the entire MLB in team average. Boston leads the majors in runs too, while Balitmore is fourth. Look for this series to be split, 1-1

Game 1

Birds Beat Beckett in Boston

In a game where runs became a premium because of two good pitching performances by Josh Beckett and Brian Matusz, the Orioles' four runs were enough to win. Derrek Lee hit a solo homerun in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead and they never looked back. After the homerun the Red Sox brought in Dan Wheeler for the last three innings and he didn't surrender a single hit or a baserunner. Brian Matusz was able to get through the seventh. In the eighth new Oriole Chad Qualls earned his first hold as a Bird. He did give up a hit but shut down the rest of the inning. Mike Gonzalez continued is hot streak by going three up and three down in the ninth to capture his seventh save of the year. Once the weakness of the team the bullpen is starting to become a strength. Brian Matusz earned his seventh win today. He gave up two runs but only one of them was earned due to the rare error by 2B Brian Roberts. Adrian Gonzalez left the game with a torn calf. Word from the Boston doctors is that the first basemen is out for 1-2 months.

Game 2

With a Little Luck & Defense O's Win

The other good pitching matchup in the series pitted Clay Buchholz and Jake Arrieta against each other. The Orioles won the game 4-1 but it was a lot closer than it seemed. The O's put up runs in the first, third and fouth. The insurance run came in the ninth. Before rookie Jose Iglesias' homer in the seventh the Red Sox couldn't catch a break.. Kevin Youkilis hit a ball that just barely curled foul at the last second in the fifth inning. Same for David Ortiz in the sixth. Theoretically the Sox' could have been up 4-3 in the ninth with Papelbon on the mound instead of Bard. What if's get you no where the fact is these balls did go foul and both batters ended up striking out. In the ninth Mike Gonzalez gave up a lead off triple to Jason Varitek who is taking over at first with Adrian Gonzalez injured. Iglesias, Crawford and Ellsbury struck out to end the game, giving Gonzalez his eighth save of the year. Baltimore did play wonderful defense today. Mark Reynolds and Cesar Izturis made some fantastic plays . Another thing the O's are doing better at, is taking pitches and wearing down a starter or if they are down two strikes fouling off pitches to make pitchers work for their outs. One thing earlier in the year that they didn't do. The record has improved because of the patience at the plate.

Who's Better?

With the short series we have decided to start a segment called who's better? where we look at two players with similar numbers and determine who is the better player. Today we are comparing Orioles young stud pitcher Brian Matusz and Jake Arrieta. Both are undefeated and both have low ERA's and WHIP. But who is better. We will take a look at the advanced stats as well take into count who has faced the tougher lineups.

Matusz -Stat- Arrieta
7-0 -Record- 5-0
2.73 -ERA- 2.51
7 -Quality Starts- 6
62.2 -Innings Pitched- 57.1
53 -Strikeouts- 40
5 - Walks- 5

So a look at their initial stats Matusz leads in all but two. ERA and they are tied in walks. Though Matusz has pitched in 5.1 more innings, So the same amount in more innings is more impressive. These numbers would say Matusz is by the better pitcher. Lets take a look at the advanced stats

Matusz -Stat- Arrieta
2.43 -ERC- 3.40
2.58 -DIPS- 3.00
.926 -PFR- .785
.295 -BIPA- .322

Now these are the stats that show why Matusz has been the better pitcher so far. ERC is "component ERA" its a stat invented by Bill James that forecasts the pitchers overall ERA. Factoring in hits and walk, instead of just the standard formula. Basically it's the sum of the pitcher's performance. The fact that Matusz's ERC is a full run lower shows that his performances usually better the stat that backs this up is the DIPS. DIPS is Defense Independent ERA, its a stat that was invented by Voros McCracken. What it does is projects what the pitcher's ERA would have been minus the effects of defense and other luck in the game. Matusz's is lower than Arrieta's again. Now Arrieta's is higher than his actually ERA so what this is saying is that Arrieta relies on his defense to make a play or two a game to help him out. While Matusz's is lower than his ERA showing that the Orioles defense or luck has actually hurt his performances. The next stat actually backs this as well. PFR, Power - Finesse Ratio is defined as "Strikeouts Plus Walks Divided by Innings Pitched" Pitchers with a higher PFR control their starts more because they are issuing more strikeouts and walks opposed to giving up hits and relying on the defense. If you look a the numbers again Matusz has the better number because of the number of his strikeouts. So even though he relies on his defense less than Arrieta, the defense has hurt Matusz when he actually needs it. BIPA is batting average of balls in play, also referred to as BABIP. The higher the average usually means the defense was worse behind you. Well that's where the stats flip. All the other stats say Matusz's outings are defended worse, but the BIPA says that Arrieta isn't getting the defense he should be getting.

After analyzing the numbers they show Brian Matusz's and his 7-0 record is the better pitcher, but not by much. It looks like Baltimore has a good 1-2 combo of pitchers for the years to come.

Next update will be the mid month around the league and team stats update

Team Statistics

Hitting

The Orioles have been one of the best hitting teams in the league through the first month and a half. They have three guys with double digit homers already. Derrek Lee is having a year closer to his 2005 and 2009 seasons than his 2010 season. JJ Hardy has been the biggest surprised with his team leading batting average and on base percentage. Also Felix Pie's batting average is at a career high and he is on his way to a career year. He does platoon with Luke Scott. Scott hits lefties and Pie righties. Scott also is the backup OF for the team. He and Pie are close in ABs and Pie has performed better this year. Showalter so far has made a good decision to keep him in against the righties earning more of the playing time.

Pitching

Well right now the staff has two Cy Young candidates in Matusz and Arrieta. The unsung guy so far has been journeyman Justin Duchscherer. He has only had one bad outing and another cut short due to injury. But he has also been a very good fourth start. Rookie Troy Patton wasn't expected to be up this year but he is having a great year too. Ace Jeremy Guthrie struggled for a couple of starts but looks to be back on track. Since the last time we did this the bullpen has changed significantly with the additions of Hendrickson, Delcarmen and Qualls.

The AL East has turned into a three team race. No shocker that the Sox and Yanks are in the middle of the battle, but it is a pleasant surprise that the Orioles are still in the mix. The Central is a three team race too and they have a surprise third team in Cleveland joining favorites Detroit and Minnesota. Oakland is running away with the West. They are just dominating the division right now. The Rangers do have SS Andrus on the DL and Yorvit Torrealba too. With the central and east in tight races it looks like the Wild Card is going to be a very interesting race with four teams with a legit shot at it.

The west is wild out in the NL too. The Giants are the leaders by 3 games and Colorado has been in a free fall since losing Todd Helton and Ryan Spilborghs to injury.

Prediction

I think Baltimore can win both games. Now both rotations are in the back end and Baltimore's back end guys have performed better this year. Freddy Garcia has beat the O's this year and Betances got lit up in his outing. The O's bats are hot and the pitchers are throwing fire. The Yanks are only a game behind the Birds in the standings hope for a sweep, look for a split.

Game 1

O's Eek Out Win

Baltimore won tonight 4-3. It was a collective win for the club. Justin Duchscherer gave up all three runs on seven hits with four strike outs. The bullpen again held a lead and saved it. Duchscherer pitched decently. His numbers would say he pitched good but there were a lot of close plays tonight. Freddy Garcia lasted 5.2 innings and pitched quickly. Through the first 5 innings he only threw 44 pitches. Now he threw a lot of strikes and got a lot of fly ball outs. In the sixth it seemed he started to feel pressure because he threw a lot more balls and wasn't as aggressive and the O's took advantage. Derrek Lee walked in a eight pitch at bat, then Mark Reynolds hit a two-two pitch for a double to score Lee and tie the game. The go ahead run was scored on a ball dropped by Derek Jeter, JJ Hardy safely reached first and Mark Reynolds scored. Mark Hendrickson held the seventh and Manny Delcarmen did the eighth. Mike Gonzalez saved his third game in as many nights, he also earned player of the game. If the game is close tomorrow night expect Kevin Gregg to close the game out. The O's win their fourth straight

O's Drop In Ninth, 3-2

After a lull of a gamete late innings got interesting. The O's broke open with a game in the sixth inning. After an A-Rod homer run to take a 2-1 lead top of the eighth, Adam Jones hit a solo shot to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Newly acquired reliever Chad Qualls was the victim. A tiring Jim Johnson who pitched well needed to be pulled. Closer Mike Gonzalez had pitched three nights in a row and we hadn't seen Qualls since he arrived. Brett Gardner singled to center. Then Robinson Cano struckout but on the strikeout pitch Gardner broke for second and stole it successfully. Then Eric Chavez singled to center scoring Gardner on a close play at the plate. Adam Jones threw a spot on ball to Wieters, Gardner was just too fast. Rivera came in the ninth and shut down the O's earning his eleventh save of the year. The Birds lose a close one 3-2.

You should probably protest the Rays game you lost where Manny hit 3 HR's. Test him for steroids! And I say this as a Rays fan, ha.

I'm following. Keep up the good work.

LOL! yeah that was a sportscast simulated game. I was like there's no way he hits three, then he promptly hit number three. So i said to myself barring the bases being loaded, im walking him next time. So i did, i wish there was an option to hit the batter.

and thanks for following

Injury Report

No Injuries for either club

Prediction

For the first time in the Beltway series both teams have winning records and both teams are both playing great right now and have a chance to make the playoffs. Expect this to a pitching duel in all three games. Both teams have the number one and two team ERA's in the majors. All three matchups are good but the prize matchup is game two, Strasburg vs Matusz. I think this is the most important game of the year. I think Baltimore wins two of three due to their superior lineup and hitting so far this season. Look for a close series thought.
