Pride. Passion. Pittsburgh Pirates. First Pick In Draft. (MLB 11 The Show GM Chise)

With the new "OSFM Opening Day" Rosters out I decided to redo this franchise with Pittsburgh and seeing as simming just wasn't doing it for me I will take to adopting the one starter per turn through rotation style of playing and simming this franchise with some play with the minor league teams and special games like All-Star and playoffs as well.

I also decided to cut trades off and will cut them on after the All-Star game after seeing the Nationals trade Bryce Harper.

Re: Pride. Passion. Pittsburgh Pirates. First Pick In Draft. (MLB 11 The Show GM Chis

Pirates secure first pick in 2011 Draft
09/29/10

ST. LOUIS -- On a night when three other teams -- the Reds, Yankees and Rays -- clinched playoff berths, the Pirates secured their spot picking first in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

Even though they defeated the Cardinals, 7-2, on Tuesday, the Pirates were assured of next June's top pick with the Mariners' win over Texas. The order for Draft selection follows the reverse order of the final standings. Even with five games remaining, the Pirates (56-101) will finish with the Majors' worst record, regardless of the outcome of the team's final games.

There is still a scenario in which the Mariners and Pirates could both finish with 101 losses -- the Mariners would have to lose each of their remaining games and Pittsburgh would have to win out -- but the top pick would still be guaranteed to go to the Pirates since they finished with a worse record in 2009.

The Pirates have chosen first in the Draft three times previously, most recently in 2002. Pittsburgh selected college pitcher Bryan Bullington that summer, paying him a $4 million signing bonus. Bullington, now in the Royals' organization, made only six appearances with the Pirates. He went 0-3 with a 5.89 ERA.

Pittsburgh also had the No. 1 pick in 1985, when the organization selected third baseman Jeff King, and in 1996, when right-hander Kris Benson was taken.

Though the Pirates haven't chosen first since '02, 2011 will mark the sixth straight year in which the Pirates have had one of the first four selections. In 2008 and 2010, the Pirates had the No. 2 overall pick.

Having the No. 1 overall pick is likely to cost the Pirates a substantial amount financially, though the organization has proven in recent years that it is devoted to allocating significant resources to the Draft. The Pirates spent just under $12 million to sign players drafted in 2010 and have spent more money on the Draft in the last three years ($30.6 million) than any other team.

Asked earlier this summer if the Pirates would be able to afford the financial demands of a top pick, Pirates president Frank Coonelly answered in the affirmative.

Under scouting director Greg Smith, the Pirates have used their most recent first-round selections on third baseman Pedro Alvarez, catcher Tony Sanchez and right-hander Jameson Taillon.

Alvarez and Taillon were widely agreed upon in the industry to be the best players available when the Pirates picked second in '08 and '10. The Pirates decision to take Sanchez in 2009 produced some external backlash, but Sanchez's early success in the Minors has quieted most of those skeptics.

So who might the Pirates already be eyeing for 2011?

Re: Pride. Passion. Pittsburgh Pirates. First Pick In Draft. (MLB 11 The Show GM Chis

Kevin Correia pitched 8 strong innings shutting out the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in a Pirates 2-0 victory on Opening Day. Correia allowed 3 hits while striking out 10 and walking 1, in the process pitching to one over the minimum as he received helped from his defense. Perfect through 5.1 he would allow a single to Tyler Colvin who was out on the front end of a double play 6-4-3 off the bat of Alfonso Soriano. Two innings later he would allow a single to Marlon Byrd with one out before getting Aramis Ramirez to ground into a 5-4-3 double play. It was smooth sailing for most of the game for Correia until the 8th when he allowed a lead off walk on a 3-2 pitch to Carlos Pena and Colvin followed that up with a single to left putting runners on 1st and 2nd to start the inning. He would get another 6-4-3 double play courtesy of Soriano leaving Pena at third with two outs in the inning. Kevin Correia would finish his evening by getting Geovany Soto to chase an 0-2 curveball. Joel Hanrahan came on to pitch the 9th and earn the save with relative ease, only allowing a Starlin Castro 2 out single to left before getting Byrd to ground out to end the game.

The Pirates would get all the offense they would need when Lyle Overbay launched a Ryan Dempster pitch out of the park to right in the top of the 4th, and Jose Tabata would triple home Ronny Cedeno in the following inning.

Paul Maholm will pitch game two for the Pirates and the Cubs will counter with Big Z, Carlos Zambrano.

Carlos Zambrano (0-1) started and took the loss, though he pitched fairly well, giving up 2 runs and 4 hits over 7 innings. Alfonso Soriano had 1 RBI on 2 hits in 2 at-bats for the Cubs.

The series concludes, as the Pirates go for a sweep on the road behind starting pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, who's slated to oppose Matt Garza and the Cubs.

Game 3
Pirates at Cubs L 6-1
Matt Diaz drove in the lone run by going 1 for 1. Ross Ohlendorf (0-1) was the starting and losing pitcher, allowing 4 runs and 8 hits in his 5 innings.

Getting the win was Matt Garza, who gave up 1 run on 8 hits en route to getting his 1st win of the season. Carlos Pena had a clutch performance, getting 3 RBI and banging out 3 hits in 5 at-bats to pace the offense.

The Pirates and Charlie Morton head to St. Louis to start a set with the Cardinals, who counter with Kyle McClellan.

April 4 -Charlie Morton (2-12 7.57 59 K) vs Kyle McClellan (1-4 2.27 60 K)

April 5 -James McDonald (4-6 4.02 68 K) vs Kyle Lohse (4-8 6.55 54 K)

April 6 - Kevin Correia (1-0 0.00 10 K) vs Adam Wainwright (1-0 2.84 7 K)

Game 1
Pirates at Cardinals L 14-9
Garrett Jones played home run derby with the Pirates, clubbing 2 home runs and driving in 4 runs while going 3 for 5 at the dish. Charlie Morton got the starting assignment but managed to pitch only 1.2 innings, allowing 8 runs on 8 hits, seeing his record fall to 0-1.

Colby Rasmus went 5 for 5 and drove in 5 runs to ignite the offense. Kyle McClellan pitched 7 innings giving up 5 hits, giving up 4 runs and striking out 7, to secure victory number 1 of the season.

The series continues under the lights, with James McDonald going for the Pirates against Kyle Lohse and the Cardinals.

Game 2
Pirates at Cardinals W 4-2
Ronny Cedeno drove in 2 runs on 3 hits, helping the club pick up the win. Coming into a tie game, Garrett Olson was able to snatch a win, his 1st of the season, pitching 0.1 innings in relief of James McDonald.

Kyle Lohse went 7 innings, allowing 1 run and 8 hits, but he didn't factor into the decision. Brian Tallet, who worked in relief of starter Kyle Lohse, had a rough outing out of the bullpen, getting torched for 3 runs without recording an out. Adron Chambers went 1 for 1 on the day, in what was an unusually slow day at the plate.

It'll be the Pirates' Kevin Correia (1-0 0.00) facing off with Adam Wainwright (1-0 2.84) in the series finale at Busch Stadium.

Game 3
Pirates at Cardinals L 3-0
Chris Resop, who worked in relief of starter Kevin Correia, had a rough outing out of the bullpen, getting torched for 3 runs in just 1.2 innings. Neil Walker picked up a couple of hits in 4 at-bats to provide a mild spark offensively. Correia was removed after 3.2 innings due to a minor injury, however he is expected to make his next scheduled start.

Adam Wainwright received a no-decision, despite giving up no runs over 8 innings. Working in relief of starter Adam Wainwright, Trever Miller allowed no runs and no hits in 1 inning to earn his 1st win of the season. Colby Rasmus smashed a home run, his only hit of the day, and knocked in 3 runs to spark the offense.

The Rockies are next up for the Pirates, who face a tough starter, Ubaldo Jimenez (1-0 2.57), while Paul Maholm (1-0 2.35) takes the hill in Pittsburgh.

After an off day, the Cardinals will be in San Francisco to start a set with the Giants, and it'll be ace Chris Carpenter (1-0 1.00) against Matt Cain (1-0 0.00) in the series opener at AT&T Park.

04/05/11
Rockies
-Aaron Cook placed on 15-Day DL with torn hamstring, will miss 1-2 months, called up Claudio Vargas to take his place on the roster.
