Rangers on the verge of wheeling and dealing? Buzz around Arlington says the front office is hitting the phones hard
July 4, 2011
ARLINGTON, TX - The Rangers are as hot as the sweltering Texas heat as summer comes into full bloom. The pitching is still cruising along (despite Chris Young being blown apart the other day), and the bats have gone nuclear with a 35-run explosion against a very solid Florida Marlins pitching staff.
And yet, several shakeups could be on the way.
A source close to the organization says the Texas front office is actively shopping several players and is in contact with numerous teams throughout baseball. It is unclear what exactly the Rangers are looking for on the market, but they do have numerous very valuable assets that would be appealing to other teams. Another report says the Rangers are open to offers for almost any player in the organization, save for a very select few, presumably cornerstones like Josh Hamilton, CJ Wilson, Brandon Webb, Elvis Andrus, Ian Kinsler, Neftali Feliz, and probably Adrian Beltre. An interesting notion is that, just as they did with Ben Sheets when they traded him to the Mets (where he is now on the disabled list), the Rangers may be looking to "sell high" once again, this time with Manny Ramirez. Manny has recovered from the team-wide slump to open the season and looks as dangerous as ever in the middle of the lineup, and that has piqued the interest of several teams interested in adding a bat. The Rangers love having him protecting Hamilton in the lineup, but his age and liability in the outfield is a stumbling point. One thing the Rangers are definitely interested in is speed, especially in the outfield, and Manny certainly doesn't bring that, and more often than not he occupies the DH spot, even when the Rangers would prefer giving it to someone else on any given day for fatigue purposes.
The trade deadline is less than a month away now, and the All-Star Break looms this coming weekend. Things definitely appear to be on the verge of heating up for the Rangers' brass.
Fireworks on the field and off in Texas The first domino falls as the Rangers make a move
July 5, 2011
ARLINGTON, TX - The offensive explosion continued at the ballpark for the Rangers last night, as they celebrated the 4th of July with four homeruns in an 11-7 win over the Orioles.
And after the game, the fireworks continued off the field, as the Texas brass made a move.
Headed to Tampa Bay are starter/reliever Tommy Hunter and relievers Arthur Rhodes and Yoshinori Tateyama. In exchange, the Rangers have acquired star prospects Desmond Jennings and Reid Brignac, along with starting pitcher Ervin Santana, whom the Rays just acquired on July 2nd from the Angels.
Jennings and Brignac are two highly touted prospects, with Jennings able to play all the outfield positions, and Brignac being a shortstop by trade but having the ability to play all over the infield, giving the Rangers even more of the versatility that they love. Both youngsters have had their growing pains in Tampa Bay this season, as Brignac is hitting just .182 in 62 games, and Jennings hitting .232 in 44.
However, it would seem that this is only the beginning, evidenced by the acquisition of Santana. The 28-year old righty is 6-4 with a 4.09 ERA this season, but a source inside the Rangers' front office says they have no intention of keeping him, and took him in the deal to use as a valuable asset in negotiations with other teams. The same source also said that the Rangers are actively shopping two of their own brightest pitching prospects, Derek Holland and Matt Harrison, and may be looking for an upgrade at catcher, in spite of Taylor Teagarden's recent tear. It is definitely possible that the Rangers' next move will go down before the All-Star Break, as they are apparently afraid that the player(s) they want will be traded elsewhere before they can make their offer.
