Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)

Still no Yadi, but Marlins get Hanley for Game 3
Cruz gets second consecutive start
August 6, 2011

MIAMI, FL-- After a painful extra innings loss last night, the Cardinals were hoping that they'd get their star catcher back from an injury he suffered in the first game of the series against the Florida Marlins. But Yadier Molina's bruised foot still isn't healed enough for him to sit down behind home plate.

Rookie Tony Cruz gets his second start in place of Molina, while star shortstop Hanley Ramirez makes his return to the Marlins' lineup. Ramirez, like Molina, also got injured in Game One.

"It's obviously another guy to watch out for in the lineup", Jake Westbrook, the pitcher who's getting the start for the Cardinals today, said. "They've got a lot of good hitters and Ramirez just might be the best of them."

But the Cardinals have their share of good hitters as well, and now they might have the best possible lineup in that regard, as Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman occupy the three, four and five-slots for the first time in this series.

"It's good to have them all out there at the same time. It becomes a case of pick your poison for the opponent," manager Tony LaRussa said of his superstars all getting out there.

Taking the mound for the Marlins is Anibal Sanchez, who - like Westbrook - has struggled a bit this season. A record of 8-10 with a 4.80 ERA is not the best that this pitcher can do.

This game will be a huge leap for one of these teams to win the series, as there's only one game left after this.

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)

Holliday goes yard twice as Cards win in 18th
Molina used as pinch-hitter
August 6, 2011

MIAMI, FL-- The St. Louis Cardinals and the Florida Marlins had their game go into extra innings for the second time in a row. This time the Cardinals came out victorious thanks to Matt Holliday's second home run, a three-run blast in the 18th. Holliday had hit a solo shot in the 7th to bring the Redbirds within one run of the home team. Lance Berkman hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to tie it up.

It seemed like the game would go on forever as Mark Rzepczynski retired the Marlins for the third time, but then Rafael Furcal got on base, Skip Schumaker sacrificed him to second, Albert Pujols got walked and in came Holliday to send the ball into the stands for the second time. Corey Patterson added another run for the Cardinals with an RBI single that brought home David Freese after the third baseman had doubled.

"It's an important win for us, as this goes a long way in winning the series. At least we've secured a split now," said skipper Tony LaRussa.

Jake Westbrook pitched five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and walking one batter. After that the bullpen took over, with everyone except Fernando Salas (who played the 18th) working multiple innings.

"It was good to see guys like Jason Motte, who's normally used for just one inning, go for three and only give up two hits," LaRussa commented. The only pitcher in the bullpen who didn't get any work today was Octavio Dotel. As for the bench, everyone got an at-bat. Even the injured Yadier Molina.

"It's just my foot that's a bit hurt. I can hit alright, but catching and running the bases is a bit difficult," the catcher said of his situation.

Salas did give up one run, on a solo shot by Omar Infante, but managed to retire three batters to earn a 6-3 win for the Cardinals.

With the win, the Cardinals keep their lead in the NL Central. Though the Cubs, Reds and Brewers are all breathing down their neck, each team within three games of the division leaders. Next up is the last game of the series against the Marlins, in which the Redbirds have a good chance to open up the lead some more.

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)

Cards looking to win final game, series
Top prospect Miller diagnosed with torn achilles tendon
August 7, 2011

MIAMI, FL-- As the final game of the series against the Florida Marlins approaches, the St. Louis Cardinals got some bad news. Their top prospect, pitcher Shelby Miller, tore his achilles tendon in a game yesterday and will be out for at least half a year. The Cardinals are hoping that this will not set back Miller too much, as his arrival to the major league level was much expected.

"It hurts, but we just have to hope that once he recovers he'll come back stronger than ever. We had big plans for him, maybe even a rotation spot next year, but I think with this he'll have to wait a bit longer," said Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa.

As for the game later today, the Cardinals are sending Kyle Lohse to the mound. Lohse has been a revelation so far. He was considered perhaps the weakest link of the rotation early in the year, but so far he's been the best the Cardinals have when it comes to statistics. His record stands at 10-4 and his ERA is 2.99. Those are numbers even better than Chris Carpenter's.

It looks like the team will have to do without it's number one catcher today as well, as Yadier Molina's bruised foot seems to be still bothering him. Tony Cruz will get the start again, but you start to think if maybe it was time for Gerald Laird to be called up from Triple-A Memphis. Nevertheless, the day off tomorrow will surely help Yadi and the rest of the team recover from this four-game series.

The Cardinals' top hitters are most likely licking their chops right now, as the pitcher the Marlins are sending out has been playing nowhere near the level where Lohse has been. Instead Chris Volstad has been one of the worse pitchers around, with a record of 1-4 and an ERA of 4.89.

"He hasn't been sharp this year, but you can never underestimate a pitcher before a game. You've got to go out there, see what he's got and overpower him," said the Cards' leader in RBIs, Lance Berkman.

As said before, after this there will be a day off before a three-game series at home against the Milwaukee Brewers. A series which means an awful lot in taking over the division.

Redbirds grab series win behind Jay's hot bat
Lohse gets win number 11
August 7, 2011

MIAMI, FL-- Jon Jay certainly was the catalyst for the St. Louis Cardinals as they won the series finale against the Florida Marlins 6-2, thus winning the series 3-1 as well. The young center fielder went 3-for-5 batting in two runs and coming around to score twice himself as well. Lance Berkman also drove in two runs with a double in the fourth inning, getting the Cardinals on the scoreboard and leading the eventual jump to a 5-0 lead in the seventh.

Starter Kyle Lohse pitched strong for 6.1 innings, before allowing three consecutive hits on which two runs came across to score. Mitchell Boggs then took over, and the bullpen held the Marlins scoreless for the rest of the game. Albert Pujols added an RBI double in the ninth, bringing in Jay. Fernando Salas then shut the door on the Marlins, closing out the game despite it not being a save situation.

"We want him to regain his confidence. After that last blown save a couple of days ago, he's been kind of down on himself. Because of the game and because of what they say in the media. Now he's had two games where he's pitched the last inning and has kept us in the lead, so he's confidence is up again", Cardinals skipper Tony LaRussa commented on his strategy using the young closer.

Donnie Murphy drove in both runs for the Marlins on a double he got off Lohse in the seventh inning, but otherwise the team was held in check by the pitching staff, as they only got six hits, as opposed to the Cardinals fourteen.

"We've been getting a lot of hits through the series, but we haven't had a huge amount of runs aside from the first game. We want to turn those guys we get on base into runs. All of them. 6 runs on 14 hits tells us that we're leaving a lot of guys on base," said LaRussa. And indeed, the Cardinals did leave ten men on base in today's game.

Tomorrow the Cardinals get the day off, before taking on divisional rival Milwaukee back home in St. Louis.

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)

Cardinals take on Brewers as key series begins
Race in NL Central as tight as ever
August 9, 2011

ST. LOUIS, MI-- As the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers get ready for their three-game series in St. Louis, the divisional race is looking heated, with both of these teams in the mix. The Cardinals are leading the division, while the Brewers, despite having a losing record at 56-60, are only 3.5 games behind them. Between these two teams there are the Cincinnati Reds (2 games behind) and the Chicago Cubs (2.5 games behind). If the Brewers were to go on to win this series, it would help them a long way in closing the gap, while the Cardinals would help themselves in shaking off the competition.

Neither team will get the first win easily, as the two pitchers who are set to take the mound are no slouches. The Cardinals have their staff ace, Chris Carpenter, while Milwaukee answers with Yovani Gallardo, who's record really isn't any indication of how well he has been pitching, at 4-8. Gallardo's ERA is only 3.10. Carpenter meanwhile has a record of 10-6 and an ERA of 3.39.

Yadier Molina returns from injury for the series, and is an extremely important addition to the Cardinals. Tony Cruz didn't do bad in the series against Florida, but nothing can replace Yadi's ability as a defensive catcher.

Jon Jay is swinging a hot bat as of late, and will most likely be hitting from the 2-hole for most of the time against the Brewers, since that's where he's been doing most of the damage from.

The two teams last met only one week ago with a three-game series being played then as well. The Cardinals took that series 2-1, and the one to win the last game for them was none other than Carpenter, while Shaun Marcum, who makes the start for game two in this series, was on the losing end.

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)

Homers in 3rd power Cards past Brewers
Jay's bat stays hot
August 9, 2011

ST. LOUIS, MI-- A four-run third inning was the key in the Cardinals win over the Milwaukee Brewers in an opener for a series that features two divisional rivals fighting for the top spot in the NL Central. Jon Jay was once again the player of the game for the Cardinals, as the young center fielder launched the two-run homer that would put the Cards ahead, bringing home pitcher Chris Carpenter as well. Right after Jay's shot, Albert Pujols singled, and Matt Holliday sent a bomb of his own into the stands to put the Cards ahead 4-0. Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo would then pitch for only one inning after that, before being pulled for the fifth inning.

Holliday added a sacrifice fly, bringing in Rafael Furcal to put the Cardinals ahead 5-0 in the sixth. Carpenter would then give up two runs on two triples by pinch hitter Greg Counsell and right fielder Corey Hart before being pulled. He pitched for 6.1 innings and gave up eleven hits. Mark Rzsepczynski and Octavio Dotel pitched until the ninth, where closer Fernando Salas stepped into the game and picked up the save, ending it with a beautiful 2-2 pitch to the outside corner to the strike zone, catching Hart looking.

"It was a good performance by the team, and certainly a good start to the series. If we keep swinging our like bats like we have been for the last few games I think we're looking real strong," manager Tony LaRussa told the press after the game.

Jay has been on a major roll for the last few games, batting 2-for-4 today, hitting that home run in the third and also hitting a single later on.

Yadier Molina made his return from injury, but went 0-4 at the plate. His defensive work was as strong as ever, not letting a single ball get away. the Brewers didn't even try to run on him, while Furcal stole his thirteenth base of the season for the Cardinals. It was also the first game in a while where the Cardinals didn't commit a single defensive error.

Busch Stadium was pretty much packed for the game, with over 40,000 fans in attendance to watch the Cardinals take the win.

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)

Cards face another tough pitcher in Game 2
Punto called up, Craig sent down
August 10, 2011

ST. LOUIS, MI-- The St. Louis Cardinals are set for yet another tough test offensively as they get ready for their second game against the Milwaukee Brewers. They solved case Yovani Gallardo easily enough, getting four runs off him in three innings. Next up is Shaun Marcum, who has a record of 6-8 and an ERA of 3.95.

Marcum is another of the bad luck losers on the Brewers rotation, with only ace Zack Greinke really having a record that reflects his pitching at 14-2. Greinke is one of the strongest candidates for the NL's Cy Young Award, and the Cardinals must be somewhat relieved that they don't have to face him this series.

Jon Jay has been leading the way for the Cardinals, hitting for an average of .450 in his last ten games. Albert Pujols, Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday have been providing a nice support for the young center fielder as well.

The Cardinals roster changes a bit for this game, as outfielder Allen Craig was sent to Triple-A Memphis and utility infielder Nick Punto was called up. Punto was supposed to be on the major league roster all season, but he has suffered from injuries throughout the year. He is a terrific fielder and can provide a bit of an offensive spark. Though he might not get the start with David Freese getting the day off yesterday, and Skip Schumaker batting well.

Another Cardinals' infielder who hasn't seen a lot of playing time lately is shortstop Ryan Theriot. Theriot is the team leader in batting average, but as of late he's mostly been used as a pinch-hitter.

"I'm anxious for some starts, but I realize that Rafael (Furcal) is the starter over at short now, and my job is to be more of an utility guy," the veteran said of his situation. Theriot certainly is a good addition offensively, but his defense leaves a lot to be desired when compared to Furcal's. Whoever gets the start today will have to play a good game, as the Brewers seem to tend hit a lot of balls on the ground.

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)

Brewers come on top in nailbiter
Freese injured
August 10, 2011

ST. LOUIS, MI-- The Cardinals ended their winning streak at three games, after they lost to the Brewers 4-3. Jonathan Lucroy hit a base hit to center to bring in pinch runner Carlos Gomez in the ninth, and the Cardinals weren't able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

It looked good for the Cardinals when they jumped ahead with Jon Jay's (3-for-4 in the game) RBI triple, followed by Albert Pujols' home run to put them up 3-0. Jay now leads the National League with 9 triples.

But then came the two base hits from Nyjer Morgan and Corey Hart, and Prince Fielder crushed the ball into the stands, leaving Jaime Garcia wondering how he'd managed to give up a three-run lead in only 6 pitches.

"He's probably the most dangerous hitter in the league right now," Garcia said of Fielder. "You can't put men on base before him. He'll bring them home, 'cause when you have men on base, you can't pitch as freely to him and he'll get more good pitches to hit."

Third baseman David Freese injured himself halfway through the game, but luckily it's nothing serious and Freese will be able to play tomorrow, when the two teams wrap up this series.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals are still the leaders in the NL Central. The Reds are now only one game behind them, while the Brewers trail by 3.5 games. Still, you get the feeling that they should have won this game, with the help of the Brewers atrocious defense. Albert Pujols reached third after his double, because of Yunieski Betancourt's throwing error. Corey Hart made up for it by throwing Pujols out at home when he tried to score on Matt Holliday's flyout. Betancourt also committed a fielding error in the game.
