Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)
Lohse turns in another great performance in win StlToday.com | Friday, August 19, 2011 CHICAGO, IL-- Kyle Lohse is certainly making everyone look at him in a different light this year. Before, everyone taught of him as an overrated, overpaid starter, who got his huge contract thanks to one good year. Now, no one is saying that anymore. Lohse was once again magnificent as the Cardinals took down the Chicago Cubs 3-2. He went seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits and struck out eight. "He (Lohse) has certainly been great. We're lucky to have him when he's having a season like this," said Cardinals skipper Tony LaRussa. Lohse even did it with his bat, driving in the first run of the game with a single to right field. And that's where the Cardinals might find a problem. Once again the offense struggled to produce. Despite the win, three runs isn't enough as you can't always expect your pitcher to hold the opposition to two runs or less. They did have thirteen hits, and that makes the problem even more apparent. You have to capitalize when you have runners in scoring position. "It's certainly troubling," said Albert Pujols, who - despite extending his hitting streak to twenty-one games - failed to drive in a run today. "I know it's expected from us, from me, and we need to make sure we do our job when it comes to that." After Lohse's single, the Cardinals jumped to a 3-0 lead with RBI singles from Lance Berkman and David Freese, who had a good game and really seems to be getting back to form when at the plate. Chicago would claw back a run in the seventh, which would be Lohse's last inning, when Geovany Soto's RBI single got Soriano home. Jason Motte pitched the eight flawlessly, producing three ground outs to Pujols at first base, allowing closer Fernando Salas to start the ninth with a two-run lead. Salas got one out, but then allowed Carlos Pena to hit a triple. Pena would be driven home by Soriano's ground out. Salas would give up one more hit, but was able to get the two outs and end the game. "He faced adversity and overcame it. That's an important experience for a young pitcher," LaRussa commented. Despite it becoming a bit too close for comfort in the end, it was a good win. I say this mostly because I got to watch Kyle Lohse pitch again. Player of the Game Kyle Lohse - 7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 8 SO

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)
(65-60) vs (60-65) Cardinals vs Cubs Saturday, 20/8/2011, 3:10 PM CT at Wrigley Field Probables Chris Carpenter (11-6, 3.41) vs Carlos Zambrano (8-7, 4.21) Aces go at it in game two Associated Press | Saturday, August 20, 211 CHICAGO, IL-- After yesterday's low scoring affair, the Cardinals and the Cubs look to be in for another one of the same kind as both clubs send their ace pitchers to the mound in game two of the three-game series. For the Cardinals, it's Chris Carpenter, and for the Cubs Carlos Zambrano. Despite holding the ace status in the rotation, neither has been their team's best pitcher this season, as Kyle Lohse has continuously bested Carpenter and Ryan Dempster Zambrano. "Regardless of that, they're top-notch pitchers," said an MLB scout. "I'm sure they'll be very difficult to solve." Albert Pujols takes a twenty-one-game hitting streak into Saturday's contest. However, it has been a while since he has contributed with the home runs everyone's come to expect from him. Though Albert prides himself in being more than a power hitter, he is known for the long ball. "What makes him so great is he can beat you in a number of ways," said Zambrano as he prepares for the MVP candidate. "You don't get a streak that long if you're not a good overall hitter." Both teams look to feature their number one lineups in the game, with no one of the regulars taking a rest. |

Pinch-hitters deliver as Cards find late offense in win StlToday.com | Saturday, August 20, 2011 CHICAGO, IL-- After yesterday's game, we were complaining about the lack of run production. After today's game, you can't say so, although it did take the Cardinals until the tenth inning to find that offense. Extra inning RBIs from Daniel Descalso, Allen Craig and Matt Holliday ensured that the Cardinals walked away with a 7-3 tenth inning win over the Chicago Cubs this afternoon. A strong pitching performance from Chris Carpenter wasn't enough to earn him the win, but the bullpen did enough, allowing just one run after Carpenter left the game in the eighth. Today also saw a rare sight, as Ryan Theriot hit a home run. As you would expect, it was the first homer for him this season. Meanwhile, Albert Pujols hit his thirty-first. "Yeah, I guess I'm no Albert up there, but I get them when I can," Theriot joked about his successful pinch-hit appearance. The pinch-hitters performed for the Cardinals all game, as everyone of them was able to get a hit in. First Theriot with the homer in the eighth, then Descalso with a single and Craig with a double in the tenth. Craig was also left in to play defense instead of Jon Jay, who had his second 0-for performance in a row. "They showed up when we needed them the most. The biggest thanks in winning this game go to the guys who came off the bench," said pitcher Jason Motte, who earned his third win of the season. The ending was positive, but Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano held the Cardinals to only four hits and two runs in seven innings. Both Jay, leading off, and Skip Schumaker, hitting second, didn't get a hit, which might force manager Tony LaRussa to mess around with that part of the lineup a bit. Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)
(66-60) - (60-66) Cardinals vs Cubs Sunday 8/21/2011, 1:00 PM CT at Wrigley Field Probables Jaime Garcia (8-8, 3.39) vs Ryan Dempster (10-8, 3.30) Cardinals reassured of win as series finale approaches Associated Press | Sunday, August 21, 2011 CHICAGO, IL-- After the offense finally found some firepower in the form of its pinch-hitters yesterday, the Cardinal clubhouse is now full of confidence as the team heads to the final game of the three-game series against the Cubs. The Redbirds still hold a one-game lead over the chasing Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central, but once again the win would be extremely important. "Everyone here knows what we have to do, and what is expected of us. We have to go out there and execute perfectly and come away with the win," said Jaime Garcia, who is making the start today. Garcia is 8-8 with an ERA of 3.39, so the Cardinals have confidence in him as well, despite some rocky starts to ballgames as of late. "He's had trouble settling down, but when he does he's just as good as any other top pitcher in the league," Tony LaRussa commented. Albert Pujols still has a hitting streak going on, and it has now reached twenty-two games. Rafael Furcal also has a nice six-game streak. |

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)
Freese's comeback home run powers Cards to sweep StlToday.com | Sunday, August 21, 2011 CHICAGO, IL-- It took a while, but the Cardinals finally got their sweep as they beat the Chicago Cubs behind David Freese's three-run homer in the eighth inning. Freese had a great game, getting three hits in his four at-bats, and his home run was the only extra bases hit for the Cardinals. This is the first time the Cardinals have swept their opponent since the series against Toronto on June 24-26. The start was once again a rough one for Jaime Garcia, as he gave up two runs in the first inning. He settled down after that, but was pulled in the fifth regardless, as the Cardinals were in desperate need of offense with Ryan Dempster shutting them down. After John Baker's solo home run in the sixth all looked lost for the Cardinals, but in the next inning they managed to claw one back with Skip Schumaker's RBI single, and in the eighth Freese stepped up. Albert Pujols managed to continue his hitting streak, extending it to twenty-three games. "He has been really consistent. If you ask me, he's the MVP of the league," said Cardinals' manager Tony LaRussa. Fernando Salas picked up his thirty-eighth save of the year. Player of the Game David Freese - 3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)
(56-71) - (67-60) Dodgers vs Cardinals Monday 8/22/2011, 7:15 PM CT at Busch Stadium Probables Ted Lilly (10-8, 3.42) vs Edwin Jackson (8-8, 3.19) Following sweep, Cards head back to Busch Associated Press | Monday, August 22, 2011 ST. LOUIS, MI-- After their first swept series in over a month, and a six-game road trip, the Cardinals are coming back home to St. Louis and Busch Stadium to open their series against the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers. They face Ted Lilly, one of the better pitchers for the Dodgers this year. Lilly does not have too much velocity in his pitches, but has showed impressive control and despite a slow fastball, the drop-off in speed when compared to his off-speed pitches is a big one. Albert Pujols is having a great streak with twenty-three consecutive games where he's hit. Yadier Molina also brings a nine-game hitting streak with him. On the mound for the Cardinals will be Edwin Jackson. In his last start, Jackson threw a complete game shutout, holding the opposition to just five hits. "We are extremely confident in him. He proved to be a top-notch pitcher last time around and has performed well ever since we got him at the deadline," said skipper Tony LaRussa of his tonight's starter. With Lilly being left-handed, Lance Berkman will most likely be left out of the starting lineup, with Allen Craig starting instead. Otherwise it should be pretty much the usual, but some guys might take the day off to rest. |

Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)
Freese is clutch again as Cards come through in twelfth StlToday.com | Monday, August 22, 2011 ST. LOUIS, MI-- In just two games Cardinals' third baseman David Freese has played himself into the hearts of the fans. Yesterday in Chicago he launched the three-run homer that gave the Cardinals the win, and today against the Dodgers he hit the game-winning RBI single in the twelfth inning as the Cardinals once again had to work extra innings. In addition to that, Freese made a few really nice defensive plays. At first he dived for the ball, but failed to get the runner at first. Next time it was exactly the same play, but this time Freese made the throw and the Cardinals got the runner out, and then, with a runner on third, Freese dove to his right this time, caught the ball and got the runner at home. "He was fantastic. Without him this might have been a very different game," said Cardinals starter Edwin Jackson. Jackson went for seven innings and gave up two runs on an Andre Ethier first-inning home run, but after the first gave up only two hits in another impressive display. With his performances Jackson has done everything he can to convince the front office that he should be resigned after the season. The Cardinals do have a number of contracts expiring, but with Adam Wainwright returning from injury next year, it's most likely either Jackson or Chris Carpenter who gets the extension. Not both. It took a while for the Cardinals to score runs, but in the seventh Jon Jay's infield single brought home Matt Holliday, and then Ryan Theriot grounded out, bringing in Allen Craig and the game was tied. Then Freese settled it in extra innings with his single that drove in Skip Schumaker. With the win Cardinals are now one and a half games ahead of the Reds in the NL Central. Tomorrow Brandon Dickson makes his first major league start in absence of Jake Westbrook, who has been placed on the disabled list with head contusion. Re: Gateway Redbirds: A St. Louis Cardinals Franchise (Trade deadline rosters)
(56-72) - (68-60) Dodgers vs Cardinals Tuesday 8/23/2011, 7:15 PM CT at Busch Stadium Probables Hiroki Kuroda (8-11, 4.97) vs Brandon Dickson (0-0, 0.00) Dickson makes first start as Cardinals hope tp keep winning streak alive Associated Press | Tuesday, August 23, 2011 ST. LOUIS, MI-- After the Cardinals have got more than solid pitching from their starters in the last few games, they sure hope for the same from their rookie, 27-year old Brandon Dickson, who makes his first major league start tonight against the Dodgers. Dickson has made major league appearances from the bullpen in the past, but is still rookie according to his service time in the big leagues. He took his spot in the starting rotation following Jake Westbrook's injury. If Dickson isn't capable of producing the same kind of results as, for example, Edwin Jackson produced in yesterday's ballgame, the Cardinals have to score a lot more runs. Yesterday, despite the win, was an example of how much the Cardinals have been leaving runners on base. "It is something we have to improve on. Our one and two hitters haven't been getting on base enough, so when Albert (Pujols) and the other big hitters get to hit and they don't get to drive anyone in. They can't hit a home run every time," said manager Tony LaRussa. A lot of the usual starters might be taking their day off, as the Dodgers have a pitcher who has struggled this year on the mound. Hiroki Kuroda, the Japanese import, has a record of 8-11 with a highly inflated 4.97 ERA. Keeping that in mind, this might be the game where the Redbirds' offense finally gets on track with its run producing. The lead the Cardinals have in the NL Central is still only one and a half games, so it's looking like the September series against the Reds is going to be more than important. |
