Re: Modern History of Baseball -- 1901 to ???

1906 - Year In Review

After an interruption of two seasons the NL stronghold of Chicago had pennant fever. The Giants stayed with the Cubs until September when the Bruins kicked into high gear and built a lead of 8.5 games before coasting during the final week. The Cubs chalked up 109 wins, wiping out the Giants' 1905 record of 100 wins. The mediocre attack became a thorn in the sides of every NL pitcher with the preseason addition of third sacker Harry Steinfeldt, a .338 swinger who gave extra bite to the middle of the order. Player-manager Frank Chance hit over .305 for the fourth straight year, and catcher Johnny Kling shot from .228 the previous year to a heftier .287 batting mark. Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Chance made the infield air tight to help the pitchers allow the lowest amount of runs of any team. Three Finger Brown, lead the way with 22 wins and kept the team from many slumps. Rookie southpaw Jack Pfiester contributed with 17 victories, big Ed Reulbach 19, Carl Lundgren 16 and Orval Overall came over from Cincinnati in mid-season to add 11 victories to the Cubs' win column.

Meanwhile in the American League, the Cleveland Naps roared out in front and galloped home with their first title by an amazing 23 games. Their high scoring lineup was lead by Terry Turner (.314-2-90), Elmer Flick (.313-1-79) and the league's batting champion, Nap Lajoie (.343-0-67). If they didn't bludgeon their opponents with the bats, the pitching staff took control. The Naps had four 20-game winners, led by the 1-2 punch of Addie Joss (28-5, 2 sv, 1.75 era) and Otto Hess (26-8, 1 sv, 1.71 era). Rounding out the foursome were Bill Bernhard (21-10, 2 sv, 1.55 era) and Bob Rhodes (21-13, 1 sv, 2.19 era). The St.Louis Browns finished a very distant 2nd place thanks to the bat of George Stone (.325-3-78) and the arm of Fred Glade (20-10, 1 sv, 2.12 era). Defending champion Athletics ended the year in third place thanks to the bats of Socks Seybold (.321-8-61) and Harry Davis (.272-14-79) and the arms of Chief Bender (16-11, 2 sv, 2.00 era) and Rube Waddell (16-16, 2.54 era).

When it came to the World Series, the Cubs had ideas of an upset as they went home for game 3 after splitting the first two games in Cleveland. The Naps, behind the strong pitching of Bill Bernhard and Otto Hess, took the first two games in the Windy City before the Cubs forced the series back to Cleveland by taking game 5. Bill Bernhard bested Ed Reulbach, 3-2, as the Naps won their first world's championship, 4 games to 2.
