Re: The Eye of the Tiger: A Detroit Tigers Franchise (MLB 2K12)

Series Recap for June 5th-7th:
Cleveland (21-32) @ Detroit (32-23)

Game 1: Tigers lose in extras to Tribe, fall to 0-4 against rivals

Recap:
Detroit took Justin Verlander as far as he could go today, in hopes of getting a hold of Cleveland and gaining a lead for their ace...they couldn't do so. Verlander pitched 9 sparkling innings of 1 run ball and should have won today, but Jon Garland matched him pitch for pitch. Garland also had 9 innings of 1 run ball. The difference was that Detroit's pen couldn't hold Cleveland down in extras, Pauley surrendered 2 runs in the 10th inning and that was the game as Chris Perez locked down Detroit for his 14th save of the season. Detroit falls to 0-4 versus Cleveland this season.

Game 2: Fister's strong performance leads Tigers in a tight 4-3 win

Recap:
A recap is all I can give you as the box score locked on the game before I could record it (sorry!!!) Fister pitched 8 innings of dominant baseball allowing 3 runs to score on him in the 7th (on back-to-back jacks) before locking down to finish the 8th. Valverde picks up his 20th save of the year and the Tigers win their first game against the Trbe in 2012 and look to do the same tomorrow.

Game 3: Scherzer shuts up critics and dominates in 7-0 win

Recap:
Detroit wins 2 straight against Cleveland after dropping their first 4 behind Max Scherzer's complete game shutout. Scherzer was matched up against Justin Masterson, another talented starter who's had trouble putting things together this season. Miguel Cabrera noticed and jumped all over Masterson, going 2-3 with a couple of SAC flies, an RBI single, and a 2 run homer off him. Meanwhile, Scherzer was lights out, allowing only 4 hits while striking out 9 batters in his 2nd complete game of the year. The shutout cools off his hot seat a little and should buy him some more starts in The Bigs before a decision is made on his future (Scherzer is 4-8 on the year and management had been contemplating sending him to AAA or dealing him for a similar player, a change of scenery move.) In other news, OF Brennan Boesch was activated off the 15 day DL and OF Reggie Willits was optioned to AAA Toledo.

5TigersDane BraggC

6TigersGrady GetzP

8TigersMarty ArroyoP

9Tigers Phillip DuensingLF

10TigersSaul HamelsP

Notable Tigers Picks:

SS Courtney Boehler:
Drafted to develop in the minors and hopefully be the heir-apparent to Jhonny Peralta when he leaves Detroit. Boehler has an excellent glove and throwing arm. He also has some speed to boot. His swing is a contact stroke and he could probably hit anywhere between .260 and .280 as a big leaguer along with 25-35 steals.

RHP Vend Campana: Pure power stuff comes from Vend Campana, he was an excellent closer in college and comes to the Tigers with a plus fastball, and two other average pitches. Look for him to spend a year or two getting his offspeed pitched working before making it to The Show.

LHP Bud Ellis: The Tigers gem/steal in the entire draft. Ellis is an excellent southpaw and has electric stuff. Scouts compare him to Jon Lester or David Price because of his size and fastball. He features a 95+ mph fastball with a nasty curve and a wipeout slider to boot. Ellis could spend remainder of this year in the minors before trying to break with the club next season.

Series Recap for June 8th-10th:
Detroit (34-24) @ Cincinnati (36-21)

Game 1: Bullpen Implosion spoils good effort from Porcello, Dotel

Recap:
The Tigers came into Cincinnati ready to play today, as Rick Porcello did work through his first 5 innings of work. He allowed 1 earned run and struck out 7 batters through those 5 innings. But in the 6th he allowed a quick run and was yanked for Octavio Dotel. Dotel locked down the Reds for 2 innings before Joaquin Benoit got beat up for 4 runs (3 earned) while not recording an out. On the positive side for Detroit, Prince Fielder and Alex Avila homered in the losing effort. For Cincinnati, Joey Votto absolutely raked, going 3-3 with a homer.

Game 2: Leake scores his own game-winning run on Phillips Walk-Off Single

Recap:
The Tigers lose another heartbreaker to the Reds today, falling 2-1. Jacob Turner was stellar the whole game, but was let down by his defense late. Turner takes a loss in a tough fought game where he allowed 2 earned runs over 8 innings of work. He was sent back out for the 9th to face Mike Leake and hand it over to Benoit for the last two outs of the inning, but Leake singled into left field to start the inning. After a Delmon Young miscue allowed him to get into second base. Phillips proceeded to hit the Benoit fastball up the middle for the walk-off winner. Prince Fielder was the offense for Detroit, homering in the 8th inning off Leake.

Game 3: Verlander CG, Fielder's 2 HRs lead Detroit in 10-2 rout

Recap:
The Tigers avoided the sweep by jumping all over Bronson Arroyo in the early stage of this game. Delmon Young hit a 3-R HR in the first inning and Detroit never trailed in the game. Prince Fielder hit a pair of homers (giving him 4 in the series!) for his 17th and 18th homers of the year, and Miggy hit one as well to give him 22 on the year. Justin Verlander went about his business today, efficently tossing a complete game on 95 pitches. He allowed 2 runs on 10 hits and struck out 6 Reds.

Re: The Eye of the Tiger: A Detroit Tigers Franchise (MLB 2K12)

After years of self-loathing, Verlander finally gets his first hit

Verlander hugging his manager after a base knock off Bronson Arroyo

DETROIT, MI-- It was a day of joy for Detroit and Justin Verlander against the Cincinnati Reds today, they had dropped the first two games of the series and needed a win to salvage something from this series. Verlander led them on the mound with a complete game in dominating fashion, but that isn't what had Verlander talking after the game. Verlander was all smiles in the post-game press conference when he talked about his first career hit against Bronson Arroyo, "I told you guys this was the year for me, I also said I was more of a power hitter and guess what...I had a double. Sorry Bronson (Arroyo) I had to get it eventually, I'm just the best in the lineup and all you NL pitchers better watch out!"

The semi-kidding Verlander completely ignored his dominant start against a potent lineup, claiming he always expects to do that to teams. Verlander dropped his ERA to 2.18 and picked up his 8th win of the season, which isn't even the best win total or ERA on the team's staff (Turner with a 1.97 ERA and Fister with 9 wins lead the team.) All in all, if Verlander and the Tigers rotation can keep pitching even half as well as they've been pitching, the Tigers are destined for greatness.

Re: The Eye of the Tiger: A Detroit Tigers Franchise (MLB 2K12)

Series Recap for June 12th-14th:
Detroit (35-26) @ Chicago Cubs (31-30)

Game 1: Fister good, Dempster better in 3-1 win for Cubs

Recap:
Detroit gave Chicago a good fight, but in the end Ryan Dempster was too much for them to handle. Dempster is the NL leader in ERA coming into his start today and did not disappoint with a dominant start against the best lineup in the AL. He gave a complete game, 4 hit effort in which he allowed a lone run. Fister pitched the entire game as well, but he suffered a loss due to a Soriano long ball he surrendered early on. Miggy gets an RBI single in the first and Detroit fails to do anything after that.

Game 2: Scherzer settles down Detroit, gives another good outing

Recap:

Fielder and Cabrera both homered for Detroit and Brandon Inge hit a pinch-hit 3R-HR in the 8th inning. Soto and Soriano homered for the Cubs in the losing effort.

Game 3: Barn Burner in Chicago goes Detroit's way

Recap:
Detroit had a big lead going into the bottom of the 8th inning in Chicago, a 5 run spread after a good Rick Porcello outing had ended. Joaquin Benoit came into the game and literally gave it away, 4 earned runs in the inning blew that lead to one, and Jose Valverde gave up another run to nod the game at 8. However, Detroit's offense was too good. Boesch, Fielder, and Cabrera combined to snag the lead for Detroit and Delmon Young hit a 2 run double in the top of the 9th to make it a 3 run game, and things weren't over yet as the Tigers batted around to get a 6 run inning. Schlereth came in and pitched a perfect 9th to seal the wild 14-8 victory.

Re: The Eye of the Tiger: A Detroit Tigers Franchise (MLB 2K12)

Series Recap for June 15th-17th:
Colorado (32-30) @ Detroit (37-27)

Game 1: Turner pitches Tigers past Rockies

Recap:
Detroit was led today by the excellent pitching of rookie hurler Jacob Turner. He gave the Tigers yet another quality start, going 7 innings, allowing 7 hit and 2 runs. He was supported by Prince Fielder who lifted off against the starter Moscoso (5-5) for his 21st bomb of the season. Todd Helton and Michael Cuddyer homered in this game for Colorado, but it wasn't enough to get past strong pitching from the Tigers. Jose Valverde also picked up save 21 in this game.

Game 2: Rockies comeback spoils Verlander's start

Recap:
The Tigers had Justin Verlander on the mound and he was dominating as he usually would be, going 7 innings and allowing 3 runs against the potent Rockies offense is very good and would earn you a win on most days...not today. Verlander had his lead squandered by reliever Joaquin Benoit, who has been struggling as of late. Daniel Schlereth picked up the loss in this game, but he calmed the game down for 2 innings before giving up a run. The Rockies overcame a bad outing from Drew Pomeranz and a Miguel Cabrera longball to win today. Helton and Gonzalez went yard for the Rockies to fuel the team.

Game 3: Fister picks up 10th win in 3-2 victory over Rockies

Recap:
Detroit needed every last run they could muster in this game today as Jeremy Guthrie and Doug Fister locked up in a masterful pitching duel. Guthrie lost the game, but pitched a complete game where he allowed 3 runs (1 earned) and struck out 7 Tigers. Fister pitched a 3 hitter through 8 innings and allowed 1 run, on a homer to Marco Scutaro of all people. Jose Valverde surrendered a run on a leadoff triple, but still managed to slam the door on his 22nd save of the year.
