Re: ESPN Presents: Cardinals Baseball

Disappointing Home Opener
Cardinals fall apart late against Cubs

St. Louis, MO -- The Cardinals hosted their home opener this year against the hated rival, Chicago Cubs, and was looking to gain the upper hand early this year. The Cardinals would take that opportunity and jump out to a 2-0 lead after a Rafael Furcal solo home run. However, the pitching for the Cardinals would fall apart late and they would give up 5 runs in the last 3 innings as pitcher Chris Clements would collect the loss for the Redbirds.

The Cardinals only mustered 5 hits and 2 of them were by Furcal who went 2-3 on the day with a double and home run, scoring both of the Cardinals runs. Pitcher Kyle Lohse went 7 innings giving up 7 hits and striking out 7, while only allowing 1 run in a no-decision.

"It was frustrating to go out and pitch so well not be able to get the win. That's part of the game sadly and we will keep working with our coaches to keep improving," said Lohse after the game.

For the Cubs pitcher Travis Wood went 5 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 runs while striking out 1. Bryan LaHair was the main focus point in the Cubs offense as he went 3-4, with a double and 1 run. Soto, Stewart and Barney also added a double in the game. Jaramillo would get an RBI triple, his first of the year, in the 9th off an Allen Craig misplayed ball.

The Cardinals and the Cubs meet again tomorrow with Randy Wells (0-1, 6.35 ERA) on the hill against Jaime Garcia (1-0 2.25 ERA)

As much as i hate the Cards (), I must say that this dynasty looks very good. I love the ESPN integration as well, it adds a nice touch to it . Id like to see what you do against the Brew Crew!

EDIT: Nevermind about the Brewers thing. Wow, the pic of RB8 in the throwback unis for the Crew looked great. Now i want to get MLB 12 and get my Brewers chise started more now!

Re: ESPN Presents: Cardinals Baseball

Tensions on high!!
Second game against Cubs proves to be an entertaining one

St. Louis, MO -- It's so young in the season and tensions between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs are already on the rise. Both teams were on the verge of clearing the benches when the umpires intervened after the cubs threw, and hit, back to back Cardinals batters.

"It's completely trash, it's bush league and they try anything like that for the rest of the season they can expect some trouble," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said after the game.

"Matheny has always been a whiner, he was a whiner when he was behind the plate and he was a whiner when he was at bat. If he personally guarantees some kind of 'trouble' I'm man enough to take him out if the benches clear," responded Dale Sveum, the Cubs manager, after the game.

The game wasn't a close one as the Cardinals took the lead on back to back home runs by Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman in the first inning. Every time the Cubs would score, the Cardinals would answer back in a fashion that showed they were the dominant team, a good turn around from the home opener loss last night.

Carlos Beltran had the best game from the plate for the Cardinals going 3-5 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs after a slow start to the season so far for him. On the mound Jaime Garcia grabbed his second win of the year backed by a good offense after he gave up 3 runs and only struck out 3 Cubs batters.

In the other dugout Aflonso Soriano finally broke out of his slump, going 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI including his first home run and double for the year. Randy Wells went 4 innings for the Cubs giving up 6 runs in the loss.

The Cubs and Cardinals close out an interesting series tomorrow.
