Re: Are you Red-dy? | A Cincinnati Reds Franchise |

Season 1 - Game 4
1-3

Killer B's Sting Reds
Beltran, Berkman combine for 10 RBIs

Carlos Beltran continued his unbelievable start by raising his average to .565 on the young season--going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs.

Lance Berkman added 2 hits, including a grand slam, and knocked in half of the Cardinals 12 runs, solidifying their 12-6 victory over the Reds.

It was another play-from-behind type of night, with Mike Leake giving up 7 hits and 6 earned runs in only 4 1/3. Nick Masset gave up the grand slam, raising his ERA to over 16.

Both clubs accumulated 11 hits, but St. Louis made the most of every opportunity, stranding only one runner in scoring position all night.

Scott Rolen was effective in the loss--collecting a double and a rare triple.

Drew Stubbs and Chris Heisey continue to struggle, hitting .111 and .071 on the season, respectively.

Game two of the series is tomorrow night in Cincinnati with Homer Bailey facing the ever-tough Chris Carpenter.

Season 1 - Game 5
1-4

Carpenter nails down shut-out
Faces two over minimum in Cards victory

Only 29 Reds hitters stepped to the plate last night, as the Cardinals took the second win of the series in as many games, 4-0. The Redlegs could only come up with 3 hits in the loss, but Dusty Baker still seemed encouraged.

"How many balls did we hit right at one of their fielders?," he asked after the game.

"Ten? Twelve? That's hitting. Making solid contact. Sometimes they just don't fall."

Actually, about six balls were struck fairly well and managed to be snagged by a Cardinals fielder. Baker mixed up the lineup today to try to create a spark, and give a few guys some rest.

Drew Stubbs lead off for the first time since last year; Brandon Phillips was moved to the 3-hole, and Joey Votto to clean-up. Jay Bruce hit second, presumably to put a few extra base hit threats ahead of the struggling Votto. The lack of protection for Votto, however, proved to be the critical question many would ask Baker.

"Chris (Heisey) has a big stick too, ya know. He just didn't see the curveball, and that made it harder for Joey to get pitches."

Expect the lineup to look more orthodox in the series finale tomorrow night. Johnny Cueto faces off against Adam Wainwright.

Re: Are you Red-dy? | A Cincinnati Reds Franchise |

Season 1 - Game 6
1-5

Heartbreaker in finale
Dramatics favor Cards, win it in 9th

The third time was not a charm for Jay Bruce.

He tied up a 3-1 game with a 2-run mammoth shot off the smoke stacks in center field in the 6th inning. He then drove in the tying run in the bottom of the 8th to make it 4-4. However, with a man in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th, he swung and missed at a 1-2 splitter from Jason Motte to end the game.

The Cardinals prevailed, 7-6, mostly because of the late game heroics from Matt Holiday and a few other Cards hitters. They scraped together three runs in the top of the 9th off of Ryan Madson and Sean Marshall--the Reds closing tandem.

Lance Berkman homered in the 2nd to give the Cardinals the early lead, and Scott Rolen provided some extra offense for the the Reds--going 3 for 5 with a double and a home run.

The disappointing loss sends the Reds off to Washington--their first road trip this season--with a 1-5 record. They look to turn it around with Mat Latos taking the hill against the Nationals to open up the four game series.

Re: Are you Red-dy? | A Cincinnati Reds Franchise |

Notes and Nonsense
a Cincinnati Reds Blog
by MasonTK

This season is not starting off the way Reds Nation had hoped. Joey Votto is hitting around the Mendoza line; Drew Stubbs, Chris Heisey and Ryan Ludwick are a combined 4-42; the bullpen is already beat-up; and worst of all (to any Reds fan), we were swept by our foes in St. Louis.

But, on the bright side, we got to see the 3rd longest home run in GABP history last night, off the bat of Jay Bruce.

Here it is, clipped together for your enjoyment...

In case you can't see, it went just over the Reds logo on the right stack in center field. It bounced off the tower and down into the concourse. I, personally, have never seen a ball hit out there. Adam Dunn still holds the record by splashing one in the Ohio river, but that one is still a myth since there were no cameras watching it land.

Juan Francisco hit this shot last season...

...but honestly, Bruce's seemed further, even after watching the videos.

Either way, I was mesmorized.

Re: Are you Red-dy? | A Cincinnati Reds Franchise |

Season 1 - Game 7
1-6

Woes Continue
Nats bullpen shuts the door, take opener 4-3

After a 1st inning home run served up to Mike Morse, Mat Latos settled down and appeared to be on his way to win number one on the season.

Unfortunately, his counter-part Gio Gonzalez grounded home the go-ahead run in the 4th inning, and the Reds failed to plate a run after the 2nd.

Brandon Phillips tripled in two runs in the early frame to give the Reds a 3-2 lead. But, after Gonzalez left the game, it was lights out. The Nationals bullpen, anchored by the league saves leader, Drew Storen, was too much for the Reds to handle.

The team again combined for double digit strikeouts--a common occurance so far this year. Despite being only seven games into the season, Dusty Baker made a comment that he may be looking to swap out a minor league player to ignite the team.

"You know, you get to the end of the season and you're a couple games out of the playoffs, and you remember this part of the season. We need to get some guys who are willing to swing at good pitches--that's been our problem."

Todd Frazer seems to be the likely option, since he can play LF and the corner infield spots.

The Nationals will host the Reds for game 2 tomorrow night in Washington.

Season 1 - Game 8
1-7

No Re-Morse in Washington
Mike Morse has 4 hit day, Reds off to worst start since '93

Jay Bruce froze on a line drive hit by Mike Morse in the 3rd. His hesitation caused the ball to get over his head, and bounce into the bullpen, scoring Ian Desmond. That was the sign that the Reds were in for another long day.

Danny Espinosa hit his first home run of the season, and the Nationals took it to Cincinnati for the second straight day, 8-2. Bronson Arroyo gave up 4 runs through 5 1/3 innings pitched, but it was the bullpen that again looked shaky. It took four guys to complete the 7th inning, and Aroldis Chapman never even registered an out.

The Reds are off to their worst start since going 2-9 in 1993. Dusty Baker is sure to mix things up, given his history of unorthodox moves.

With two games left in the series, now might be the time to make a change. Mike Leake takes to the hill tomorrow, and it could be his last start for a while if he doesn't perform well. Jeff Francis is 2-0 with 16 strikeouts in his two starts in Louisville.

Notes and Nonsense
a Cincinnati Reds Blog
by MasonTK

I'm sitting here writing this entry for you guys during the game in Washington, and before I could type about Joey Votto's horrid start, he mashed a homer to right center to give the Reds a 1-0 lead in the 1st. Finally.

That's his first home run of the season, and it gave me butterflies. If he and Brandon Phillips can get things going, the season has a chance to turn around rather quickly.

Jay Bruce, Scott Rolen, Ryan Hanigan and Zack Cozart are all playing well, and the starters haven't been terrible, either. The bullpen seemingly needs help, but those guys can all pitch, and I have a feeling we'll see it soon.

Also, it appears there have been some minor rumors swirling around the internet that Ryan Ludwick is on the trading block already. He's yet to record a hit this season, and I understand why people like to talk, but I can assure you it's only a rumor.

Minor League News

Bad news in RedsNation yesterday (besides the obvious). Billy Hamilton went down with a broken leg and will be out the remainer of the season. It happened when he attempted a hook slide into 2nd and he got caught in the loose dirt. I'll spare you the video.

That's a huge loss for the organization, as many believed him to be the future of the club--or incredible trade bait, at the least.

Denis Phipps got the call up from Single-A Dayton--much to the delight of the many fans that have been calling for him in the majors. He'll get the start tonight for the Blue Wahoos.

That's all for this post. Still 1-0 going into the 3rd. Leake is looking good.

The league is feasting on your pitching... tis not a good way to start off the season. If it carried into May you might have to shake things up a bit...
