Re: Going Upton: Lan's Arizona Diamondbacks

Putz has saved all 3 D'Backs victories

Home Sweet Home

Phoenix (AP) - After a fairly successful road trip that saw them put together a 3 game winning streak, and take 2 out of 3 from the Rockies, the D'Backs look forward to an extended 10 game homestand. That's good the news. The bad news is that the team does not have an off-day until the end of this homestand, so it's 16 straight for the boys from Phoenix. The team's depth will certainly be tested during this stretch.

Back to some more good news, the D'Backs open with a 3 game set against the Pirates. The Pirates, surprisingly, come into the game with a 4-5 record, and are currently 5th in ERA at 2.94, and 2nd in runs allowed, having allowed just 29. Offensively, they are the worst in the NL in terms of average at .223, and dead last in all of baseball with only 24 runs scored. The D'Backs are scheduled to face Karstens, Bedard, and Evan Meek in the 3 game set. Meek, not normally a starter, is a victim of my having set 4 man rotations on some teams for accurate 25 man rosters, and the AI has not yet called up an actual starter to fill the hole.

On the rehab front, Stephen Drew and Takashi Saito have been called up to the double AA Bay Bears to begin their rehab assignments. Drew will be in the lineup playing short and leading off. Saito will obviously be assigned to the bullpen. The plan is to play them in AA for a week, before moving them up to AAA and finally back into the bigs. The duo are expected to rejoin the team in Washington on May 1st.

Probable Pitchers

April 16th, 2012 6:40

ARI: Joe Saunders (0-1 4.50 ERA)
PIT: Jeff Karstens (1-0 1.13 ERA)

Saunders pitched well in his 2012 debut, turning in a quality start, going 5 giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. He was outdueled by Edinson Volquez, who allowed just 1 run in 7, as the D'Backs fell 3-1. Saunders has faced the Pirates just one time in his career, picking up a no decision in 6 IP, allowing 4 runs.

Karstens pitched well in his first start of the season against the Dodgers, working 8 strong, while scattering 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 3. The crafty veteran won't strike many out, but will also make you earn our baserunners as he walked just 33 in 162 IP last season. Karstens has made 7 career appearances against Arizona, 3 coming as a starter. He's 1-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 28.1 IP.

April 17th, 2012

ARI: Ian Kennedy (0-1 5.73 ERA)
PIT: Erik Bedard (0-0 2.08 ERA)

Staff ace Ian Kennedy has struggled a bit with control out of the gate, walking 10 in his first two appearances. He was a bit more effective in his second appearance of the season, despite walking 6, he allowed just 1 run over 6 IP while striking out 6. Once he can settle his command down he should return to form. Kennedy has faced the Pirates twice in his career, with a 1-0 record and a 0.64 ERA, striking out 16 in 14.

Oft-injured Erik Bedard has continued to prove that when he's healthy he can be an effective pitcher. Problem is, he's never healthy anymore, and due to that he's often found being restricted in pitch count and innings. Despite this, he has pitched well in his first two starts for Pittsburgh. He was on the receiving end of a massive bullpen collapse in his first outing against the Pirates. After going 6 strong, allowing just 1 run, the Pirates bullpen gave up ELEVEN runs in the 7th to the Phillies. He did not fare much luckier in his second start either, turning in 7 innings of 2 run ball, but winding up with a no decision as the Pirates fell 4-2 in extras.

April 18th, 2012

ARI: Daniel Hudson (1-0 4.15 ERA)
PIT: Evan Meek (1-0 0.79 ERA)

Hudson picked up his first win of the year in the D'Backs 10-7 victory over the Rockies. He was fairly shaky in the outing, scattering 9 hits and walking 2 over 6 IP, while striking out 7.

Meek, normally a reliever, has made two starts this year for the Pirates.

Re: Going Upton: Lan's Arizona Diamondbacks

Overbay struck out with the bases loaded to end the rally.

Deja Vu? Not This Time...

Phoenix (AP) -- For most major league baseball teams a 4 run 9th inning lead usually leads to a fairly routine victory. Well, the Pittsburgh Pirates are not most major league baseball teams, as for the second time in less than 24 hours, a bullpen implosion nearly cost the Bucs a victory. But, we'll get there in a minute.

For the rest of the game, The Pirates got on the board first in the 3rd inning on the heels of back-to-back doubles by Neil Walker and Jose Tabata. The D'Backs would answer back in the bottom of the 4th with a pair of solo home runs by Chris Young and Geoff Blum to pull ahead 2-1. That lead would be very short lived, however, as the Pirates put up a monster 5th inning on Arizona starter Daniel Hudson. Hudson never did look to have his good stuff prior to that inning as his control was all over the place, but he was managing to be effectively wild up until then. Hudson retired the first batter of the inning before hitting Alex Presley with a pitch, walking Jose Tabata, and giving up an infield swinging bunt hit to Neil Walker. McCutchen then laced a single into left, scoring Presleys and Tabata. Barajas would walk on 5 pitches, once again loading the bases. Garrett Jones had a base hit robbed on a diving play by Aaron Hill at 2nd, but the D'Backs were unable to turn 2 on it, and Walker scored, leaving runners on the corners with 2 outs. Hudson was unable to escape further trouble, however, giving up a 2 run double to McGehee, followed by a single to center by Nate McClouth scoring McGehee. He finally escaped the inning getting Clint Barmes to fly out, but not before giving up 6 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in the inning.

After a scoreless top of the 6th turned in by Bryan Shaw, the D'Backs pulled one back on an RBI single by Geoff Blum, advancing Lyle Overbay to 3rd with 1 out in the inning. Any thought of a rally was quickly squashed, however, as Henry Blanco would ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play, stranding both runners. The Pirates would get what proved to be a needed insurance run in the 7th off of reliever Shaw, who came out for a second inning of relief. Rod Barajas was able to score from 3rd with 1 out when the D'Backs elected to try and turn 2 to end the inning on a chopper to 3rd. They got the front end, but were unable to double up Barmes.

An uneventful 8th inning and top of the 9th passed, setting up what looked to be a routine end to an 8-4 victory for the Pirates. Or it would be if they probably any other team in the league. Chris Leroux started the top of the 9th for the Pirates, despite having already thrown 2 innings. He retired the first man of the inning, Geoff Blum on a routine ground out to 3rd. Henry Blanco then doubled into the right field corner, narrowly missing a solo shot, followed by pinch hitter Miguel Montero walking on 4 pitches. The Pirates elected to give the ball over to Jason Grilli, who got Bloomquist to fly out to center for the 2nd inning. Apparently they only brought in Grilli for one batter, as in came Hanrahan to face Aaron Hill. And that's where the adventure began for the Pirates. Hanrahan would walk Hill on 5 pitches to load up the bases in a 4 run game for Justin Upton, the hero of yesterday's game. Hanrahan pitched very carefully to Upton, and eventually wound up walking him on a 3-2 fastball well off the plate to make it 8-5. Jason Kubel would then line a shot off the closer's leg, that skipped far enough away to score another run, making it 8-6. Hanrahan would then walk in his second run of the inning, this time Chris Young in yet another 3-2 count, after Young fought off two 3-2 pitches, making the score 8-7. There would be no miracle for the D'Backs today though, as Lyle Overbay would go down swinging on a 1-2 changeup to end the ballgame.
