Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

5 Run First proves enough for Cubs

Chicago (AP) - Despite coming into the game with one of the best ERA's in the league, Anthony Bass struggled early against the Cubs. Bass gave up 5 runs in the first inning and was pulled after 3 innings of work and 6 runs allowed. The highlight of the 1st inning was when Alfonso Soriano put his 10the homer of the season into the bleachers. The Homer was the Career Home Run number 350 for the Slugging Soriano.

Cubs Corner:Alfonso Soriano hit his 10th homer on the year, 350 on the career, as well as knockd in his 30th RBI on the season...Starlin Castro committed his 6th error, stole his 19th base hit his 6th double and knocked in his 25th RBI...Darwin Barney had a multi hit game for 3rd game in a row and has worked his average above .200 for the first time in a long streatch...Chris Volstad was less than spectacular giving up 8 hits and a walk over 6 innings but did just enough to get the win, his 4th on the year...Carlos Marmol gave the Cubs a scare in the 9th as he gave up two hits and hit a batter as well as gave up a run but was able to get out of the jam before giving up the lead for his 11th save...Michael Bowden remained stellar out of the pen, working 2 innings and giving up no runs to keep his era under 0.50.

Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

Cubs Bullpen gives up another

Chicago (AP) - Neither starting pitcher factored in the decision today, on one side Tim Stauffer gave up 5 hits and 1 run over 7 innings while Paul Maholm gave up 2 runs on 11 hits in 8 innings. Maholm was aided by Alfonso Soriano who threw his 5th runner out at the plate from Left field to keep the game close. The Cubs were able to tie the game in the 8th off of a RBI triple from Tony Campana, however Casey Coleman came in and was unable to get any outs so the Cubs turned to Lendy Castillo who had been perfect thus far. Castillo gave up a hit that plated two and then gave up two ground balls that also plated another. Huston Street gave the Pads a scare by putting two on with 2 outs but was able to wiggle out of the jam by getting Darwin Barney to pop up.

Cubs Corner: Paul Maholm gave up 11 hits but only 2 runs in 8 innings of work....Starlin Castro stole his 20th base on the year...Tony Campana hit his 4th triple on the season...Casey Coleman has struggled out of the pen since being called up to replace Kerry Wood who retired and picked up the loss today....Lendy Castillo gave up his first earned run out of the bullpen today...David DeJesus has been hitless in his last 3 games which is 13 at bats in those 3 games...The Rubber match should feature Ryan Dempster (4-4, 2.48) and Dustin Moeley (3-4, 3.64).....Add SP Jay Jackson to the Disabled List for AAA Iowa as he was pulled from his start with an Inflamed hip and will miss 3-4 weeks.

Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

Cubs end May on High note

Chicago (AP) The Cubs got another Complete Game from Ryan Dempster who now leads the league in Complete games but only has 4 wins. Dempster gave up 1 earned run over 9 innings and gave up 6 hits and 2 walks. The Cubs stuck with Dempster despite him walking two in the 9th and putting the tying run in scoring position. San Diego starter Dustin Moseley was injured in the 4th inning after pitching a strike but he would be fine as the pulling him was just a precaution.

Cubs Corner: The Cubs finish 16-11 in the month of may and hold a 6 game lead on the 2nd place Reds....Steve Clevenger hit his 3rd Double....Ryan Dempster picked up his 4th complete game....Starlin Castro committed his 12th error...

Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

Garza, Cubs sneak by in the Bay

San Francisco (AP) - The Chicago Cubs got the better of the Giants today in a 1 run game that featured a pitching duel the entire game. Matt Garza picked up the win and Matt Cain the loss. What is unfortunate for Matt Cain is that he gets the loss despite giving up 0, thats right 0, earned runs in the game. The sole run of the game came off of a line drive that went off of Aubrey Huff's glove allowing Bryan LaHair to score in the 4th inning. Cain allowed just 4 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings while counterpart Garza allowed 3 hits and 2 walks over the same 8 innings.

Cubs Corner:Matt Garza is now 4-1 on the season...Carlos Marmol pitched a flawless ninth inning to pick up his 12th save on the season...Bryan Lahair is playing well after being moved up to the 5 hole and was 1/3 with a run scored and a walk...Darwin Barney only had 2 official at-bats as he drew a walk also...

Cubs take game two from Giants in Extras

San Francisco (AP) - It took 13 innings to decide the 2nd of 4 games in San Francisco. Both Jeff Samardzija and Madison Bumgarner went 6 innings and gave up 2 runs. Bryan LaHair was the hero for the Cubs as he had 3 hits and knocked in the game winning run in the shape of Starlin Castro off of Javier Lopez.

Cubs Corner: James Russell picked up his 2nd win of the year after a perfect 12th inning.... Carlos Marmol picked up his 13th save after a perfect 13the inning....Bryan LaHair had 3 hits, all 3 were off Left Handed pitchers....Starlin Castro stole his 21st base and was caught for the 6th time...Tony Campana stole his 17th base even though the Giants had sniffed him out and threw back to back pitchouts...The Cubs had 0 extra base hits...Michael Bowden and Lendy Castillo both came up big in their relief innings going 2 and 3 innings respectfully with 0 runs allowed.

Editors Note: Prior to the game I adjusted my pitching difficulty to make it more difficult as it appears that I am not walking enough batters nor am I giving up the kind of runs that I would expect as the Cubs...I have done nothing to the batting difficulty as it seems I struggle getting over 5 hits a game in most games, if this changes I will also up the difficulty.

Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

New Giant Sanchez gets better of Cubs

San Francisco (AP) - Newly acquired Anibal Sanchez pitched 7 1/3 for the Giants today against the Cubs and was able to pick up his 3rd win of the season. Chris Volstad for the Cubs struggled early giving up 3 earned runs but settled in to finish 6 innings of work. Pablo Sandoval led the Giants with their only extra base hit and 2 RBI's.

Cubs Corner: Following the Game Chris Volstad was sent to AAA and Travis Wood was recalled; Wood was 7-1 with an ERA just over 3 in AAA while Volstad was 4-3 with an ERA just under 4.5, Wood's first start as a Cub is scheduled to be June 8th against the Twins while Volstad will pitch June 7th in Nashville...Bryan LaHair has been on a tear since being moved to the 5 hole and hit his 13th double today...Starlin Castro and Tony Campana were both caught stealing for the 7th time...Castro committed his 13th error of the season...

Re: Chicago Cubs: Breaking The Curse: 103 Years and Counting (The Show 12)

Cubs take game 4 from Giants

San Francisco (AP) - The Chicago Cubs took game 4 from the Giants after a scary moment in the 3rd inning. Paul Maholm after a lead off single was injured sliding into second and was forced to leave the game. Casey Coleman came in and shut the door on the Giants to pick up his first win. The Giants just couldn't get anything going with runners on as their only extra base hit was from starter Ryan Volgelsong.

Cubs Corner:Bryan LaHair was injured in batting practice and scratched from a start, he is listed as day to day....Paul Maholm strained his shoulder and is listed as day to day and is not expected to miss a start....Tony Campana hit his 6th double and stole his 18th base while knocking in 2 runs to be the player of the game...Alfonso Soriano hit his 11th homer of the year....The Cubs Bullpen gave up 1 run in 7 innings of work...
