DOWN ON THE FARM

Seattle, WA (AP) - The Seattle Mariners farm system is having a pretty good April. Tacoma is dominating the PCL with a league best (17-3) record and being led by an offense that is batting a league best (.313) while leading the league in runs (125) and home runs (26). The Raniers are also second in the PCL in ERA at (2.70) trailing only Tucson (2.22).

Leading the way for the Rainers is second baseman Nick Franklin (74 OVR, B) who is hitting .382 with five home runs. Catcher Mike Zunino (79 OVR, A) is hitting .365 with two home runs and first baseman Justin Smoak (77 OVR, A) is hitting .298 with four home runs. Danny Hultzen (80 OVR, A) is (4-0, 2.01) in four starts with 35 strikeouts and 10 walks. He is making a case to get a spot in Seattle.

Down in Jackson, right fielder James Jones (65 OVR, C) is hitting .373 with four home runs and 14 RBIs. Youngster Brad Miller (72, B) is hitting .328 with a home run and 9 RBIs. Top prospect Taijuan Walker (75, A) is (0-1, 2.70) in four starts with 19 strikeouts and 7 walks.

The Mariners have been mediocre through most of April and with the great starts of some of their top prospects, it could only be a matter of time before we see some of these guys in Seattle.

It's crazy to see that Felix has been your worst SP so far.

17-3 for Tacoma is crazy.. I loved playing with them in my Franchise, and they definitely got talent... Franklin was a beast for me and still is now that I called him up.

Felix got touched up in his first two starts, but his last three have been very good, so hopefully he is coming around. Maurer and Beavan have been excellent though, great location and they never seem to miss in the strike zone, which is huge!

Thanks for checking in! I am enjoying your franchise also! Keep up the great work!

Game #24
SEATTLE 8, LOS ANGELES 4

The M's celebrate Michael Saunders second inning grand slam.

4/25/13
Seattle, WA (AP) – The Seattle Mariners returned home from their Texas trip and extended their winning streak to three games as they powered past the Los Angeles Angels 8-4 on Thursday evening at Safeco Field. Michael Saunders' second inning grand slam was the difference as the M's moved into a tie for second in the National League West.

Los Angeles (11-11) got off to a quick start against Blake Beavan, pushing a run across in the top of the first inning. Mike Trout singled up the middle on the first pitch of the game. He beat out the front end of a double play as Erick Aybar beat out the back end. Beavan got Albert Pujols to pop out to Kyle Seager. But Josh Hamilton lined a single to center, scoring Trout as the Angels pushed in front 1-0. Aybar was thrown out trying to steal second and Mark Trumbo struck out to end the inning.

Seattle would put up a big crooked number in the second off of C.J. Wilson. Kyle Seager lined out to right to open the inning. Kelly Shoppach singled to left and Jason Bay followed that with a double into the left field corner. Dustin Ackley lined a single to right, scoring Shoppach to tie the game. Robert Andino then worked a seven pitch walk to load the bases. That set up Michael Saunders and he delivered. He hammered a 2-0 slider deep into the seats in right field for a grand slam to make it 5-1.

In the third, Kelly Shoppach and Jason Bay hit back-to-back doubles to increase the lead to 6-1.

The Angels would get one back in the top of the sixth. Mike Trout doubled to left to open the inning. He advanced to third on an Aybar sacrifice bunt and scored on an Albert Pujols sacrifice fly.

The Mariners (12-12) would add a couple of runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles from Franklin Gutierrez and Mike Morse to go ahead 8-2.

Solo home runs from Josh Hamilton and Mike Trout in the eighth and ninth innings off of starter Blake Beavan closed out the scoring.

Beavan (3-0) was very sharp despite the two late solo home runs. He allowed the four earned runs on seven hits while striking out two in eight plus innings.

Five Mariners had multiple hit games in this one as they knocked out 11 hits. Jesus Montero continues to struggle, going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, dropping his average to .189.

C.J. Wilson (1-3) took the loss for the Angels, lasting just four plus innings and allowing six earned runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.

The series continues on Friday evening with rookie Blake Maurer (2-1, 2.22) scheduled to face Tommy Hanson (3-1, 4.56).

Game #25
SEATTLE 5, LOS ANGELES 1

Slump buster? Jesus Montero hit this two-run home run on Friday night.

4/26/13
Seattle, WA (AP) – The Seattle Mariners won a season high fourth straight game on Friday night as they rode the right arm of Brandon Maurer and cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Maurer got support from three Mariner homeruns, two by Kendrys Morales, as he improved to (3-1) and lowered his ERA to under 2.00.

Kendrys Morales got the Mariners on the board with a solo home run to straight away right in the bottom of the second off of Tommy Hanson. He would add a two-run blast to right in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Jesus Montero, in an awful slump, singled in the second and hit a two-run home run in the seventh off of reliever Scott Downs, to raise his batting average back over .200.

Rookie Brandon Maurer was once again the story though. He pitched seven shutout innings and scattered just five hits while striking out seven in picking up his third win on the year and lowering his ERA to 1.78.

The Angles did scratch across a run in the ninth off of closer Tom Wilhelmsen. Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton singled to open the ninth and Pujols scored on a Mike Trumbo sacrifice fly.

The series resumes on Saturday evening with Felix Hernandez (2-2, 4.09) matching up with Jason Vargas (1-1, 4.13).

Game #26
SEATTLE 7, LOS ANGELES 6

Mike Morse lines the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth.

4/27/13
Seattle, WA (AP) – This is getting fun. On Saturday evening the Seattle Mariners rallied from a 6-0 deficit, with ace Felix Hernandez chased from the game, and stormed back for a stunning 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in walk off fashion. Mike Morse hit a two-run home run in the eighth to close the gap to one run, then lined a two out RBI single to center in the bottom of the ninth to win it. The win was the Mariners fifth straight.

The Angels (11-13) got off to a great start. Erick Aybar took the first pitch of the game from Felix Hernandez and hit it into the right field seats to give the Angels and instant 1-0 lead. In the second, Howard Kendrick drew a one out walk and scored on a J.B. Shuck two out single to make it 2-0.

Hernandez would settle down setting down nine straight Angels at one point, but he ran into more trouble in the sixth. Albert Pujols singled up the middle to open the inning. Mike Trout doubled to left and Mike Trumbo was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. Howard Kendrick grounded into a fielder's choice as Pujols was thrown out at home. Chris Iannetta grounded one up the middle on a ball that looked like it could end the inning, but Duston Ackley coul dnot come up with it and two runs scored to make it 4-0. J.B. Shuck then reached on an infield single, scoring Kendrick. Erick Aybar lined a single back up the middle to score Iannetta to make it 6-0 and end Felix Hernandez's night.

This M's team that a week ago may have just played this one out, showed some spunk in the bottom of the sixth. Eddy Chavez doubled to left to open the inning off of Jason Vargas. Michael Saunders then hammered a 1-0 fastball to dead center to cut the lead to 6-2. It was Saunders sixth on the year. Dustin Ackley singled and scored on a Kendrys Morales single. They had a chance to cut into the lead even further as they had runners at second and third with one one and Jesus Montero flew out to deep center. Both runners tried to advance, but Jason Bay got thrown out at third to end the inning.

In the eighth, Mike Morse hit a long two-run home run to dead center off of Ryan Madson to cut the lead to 6-5. It was Morse's ninth home run on the year, tied for first in the American League.

Raul Ibanez pinch hit for Robert Andino to open the bottom of the ninth. He hit the first pitch that he saw from Ryan Madson deep into the seats in right to tie the game at 6-6. Kyle Seager drew a pinch hit walk. Eddy Chavez failed to execute an sacrifice bunt, popping out to Madson. Michael Saunders then struck out. Dustin Ackley walked. Manager Mike Scioscia then went to his bullpen and brought in Mike Lowe to face Mike Morse. Morse worked the count to 2-1 and then lined a ball into the alley in right center, scoring Seager and setting off a wild celebration as the M's won for the fifth straight game.

Lost in the celebration was the lousy performance from Felix Hernandez again. He went just 5 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked two and now has an ERA of 4.93.

The series wraps on Sunday afternoon with Erasmo Ramirez (2-2, 3.55) scheduled to face Joe Blanton (1-2, 4.94).

Game #27
LOS ANGELES 3, SEATTLE 2

Albert Pujols came through with a solo home run in the eighth.

4/28/13
Seattle, WA (AP) – The Los Angeles Angels avoided the sweep on Sunday afternoon after blowing a 2-0 lead. Albert Pujols hit a two-out, solo home run off of Carter Capps in the top of the eighth inning to salvage the final game of their four game series with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field 3-2. This game featured five solo home runs that accounted for all of the scoring.

The Angels (12-13) went in front 2-0 thanks to solo home runs from Howie Kendrick and Mike Trumbo, in the second and fourth innings respectively.

Branden Ryan hit a solo shot off of Joe Blanton to open the fifth. It was Ryan's first on the season.

Kelly Shoppach hit a solo home run leading off the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. It was Shoppach's first home run of 2013.

Erasmo Ramirez pitched seven strong innings for Seattle, allowing just the two solo home runs and seven hits. He struck out six. In the eighth, Carter Capps came on in relief and got Mike Trout to ground out and Erick Aybar to pop out. But he hung a 2-2 slider to Albert Pujols and Pujols slammed it into the right field seats to grab the lead.

Ryan Madsen came on in the ninth to lock down his ninth save, striking out two.

The Mariners will welcome the last place Baltimore Orioles (8-17) to town for a three game mid-week series. The Orioles just lost 3 of 4 in Oakland and currently have the worst record in the American League. Hisashi Iwakuma (2-3, 5.28) will match up with Miguel Gonzalez (0-2, 6.58) in Monday evening's opener.
