Seattle, WA (AP) – This is getting fun. On Saturday evening the Seattle Mariners rallied from a 6-0 deficit, with ace Felix Hernandez chased from the game, and stormed back for a stunning 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in walk off fashion. Mike Morse hit a two-run home run in the eighth to close the gap to one run, then lined a two out RBI single to center in the bottom of the ninth to win it. The win was the Mariners fifth straight.
The Angels (11-13) got off to a great start. Erick Aybar took the first pitch of the game from Felix Hernandez and hit it into the right field seats to give the Angels and instant 1-0 lead. In the second, Howard Kendrick drew a one out walk and scored on a J.B. Shuck two out single to make it 2-0.
Hernandez would settle down setting down nine straight Angels at one point, but he ran into more trouble in the sixth. Albert Pujols singled up the middle to open the inning. Mike Trout doubled to left and Mike Trumbo was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. Howard Kendrick grounded into a fielder's choice as Pujols was thrown out at home. Chris Iannetta grounded one up the middle on a ball that looked like it could end the inning, but Duston Ackley coul dnot come up with it and two runs scored to make it 4-0. J.B. Shuck then reached on an infield single, scoring Kendrick. Erick Aybar lined a single back up the middle to score Iannetta to make it 6-0 and end Felix Hernandez's night.
This M's team that a week ago may have just played this one out, showed some spunk in the bottom of the sixth. Eddy Chavez doubled to left to open the inning off of Jason Vargas. Michael Saunders then hammered a 1-0 fastball to dead center to cut the lead to 6-2. It was Saunders sixth on the year. Dustin Ackley singled and scored on a Kendrys Morales single. They had a chance to cut into the lead even further as they had runners at second and third with one one and Jesus Montero flew out to deep center. Both runners tried to advance, but Jason Bay got thrown out at third to end the inning.
In the eighth, Mike Morse hit a long two-run home run to dead center off of Ryan Madson to cut the lead to 6-5. It was Morse's ninth home run on the year, tied for first in the American League.
Raul Ibanez pinch hit for Robert Andino to open the bottom of the ninth. He hit the first pitch that he saw from Ryan Madson deep into the seats in right to tie the game at 6-6. Kyle Seager drew a pinch hit walk. Eddy Chavez failed to execute an sacrifice bunt, popping out to Madson. Michael Saunders then struck out. Dustin Ackley walked. Manager Mike Scioscia then went to his bullpen and brought in Mike Lowe to face Mike Morse. Morse worked the count to 2-1 and then lined a ball into the alley in right center, scoring Seager and setting off a wild celebration as the M's won for the fifth straight game.
Lost in the celebration was the lousy performance from Felix Hernandez again. He went just 5 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked two and now has an ERA of 4.93.
The series wraps on Sunday afternoon with Erasmo Ramirez (2-2, 3.55) scheduled to face Joe Blanton (1-2, 4.94).
