Stay Classy, San Diego: A Padres Franchise (MLB 13 The Show)

Padres Set For 2013 Season

Over the past few years, the San Diego Padres have fallen on tough times. But it wasn't too long ago that they were in the thick of things in the N.L. West. After a very strong end to their 2012 campaign, the Friars hope to build on that momentum and have a contending year in 2013.

Looking up and down the roster, this Padres team is solid. Anchored by young stars Chase Headley and Carlos Quentin, the offense hopes to build around those two sluggers with up and comers like Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, and rookie Jedd Gyorko. The pitching staff is healthy and ready to go in the pitchers-friendly Petco Park.

Speaking of the pitching staff, it looks to be a good one in 2013. Edinson Volquez will be the ace once again and hopes to become a bit more consistent this season. Cory Luebke will aim to have his first season without a major injury, and hopes to show all the potential everyone knows he has. Andrew Cashner will make the move from the bullpen to the rotation, and Padres fans will see that live arm for more than a few innings out of the 'pen. Clayton Richard and Tim Stauffer round out the rotation as solid starters with some upside.

The bullpen is highlighted by the back end. Huston Street is a very good closer for the Padres, and Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher are as good a setup team as you're going to find. Dale Thayer will likely be the 7th inning man for Bud Black, and brings a veteran presence to a young bullpen. Speaking of youth, Brad Brach and Nick Vincent hope to be solid middle relievers this season, and Anthony Bass will provide his long relief services to round out the bullpen.

As for the defense, it should be solid. Everth Cabrera is a very good defensive shortstop, and Yonder Alonso can pick it at first. Cameron Maybin is possibly the best defensive center fielder in the game today, and the platoon of Chris Denorfia and Will Venable in right field doesn't lack any defensive prowess.

All in all, it seems like the 2013 Padres are set up for an exciting season. They will start out with 2 series on the road before coming home to San Diego. Fans are excited to see how the new dimensions at Petco Park help their hitters, and those hitters are excited as well.

Mets Beat Padres, 7-2

Volquez Struggles as Padres Fall on Opening Day

Edinson Volquez gave up 5 runs over 4+ innings on Opening Day, and the Padres' offense was stifled by Mets starter Johan Santana. Anthony Bass came in to clean up Volquez's mess, going 3 innings and giving up 1 run. Nick Vincent also gave up a run in his inning of relief.

The Padres' offense struggled throughout the game, as they could only muster 2 runs on 8 hits. The 2 runs both came on solo home runs, one by Yasmani Grandal and the other by Chase Headley. Hopefully the offense can start to string together a few more hits in tomorrow night's ballgame.

The Friars (0-1) face off against the Mets (1-0) tomorrow night at 7:10 PM ET at Citi Field. Cory Luebke will start for the Padres against rookie sensation Matt Harvey of the Mets.

Padres Beat Mets, 3-2 in 15 Innings

Gyorko Wins Game for Padres with 1st MLB Homer

Jedd Gyorko had his first MLB hit on Opening Day, and he had his 1st MLB Home Run in the 15th inning of his 2nd MLB game. In what is sure to become one of the best wins the Padres have in 2013, the rookie was the star in the late innings.

Down 2-1 in the 9th inning, Chase Headley led off with a double. But after Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso failed to move him up, things were looking dire for the Friars. Yasmani Grandal saved the day with an RBI Single just inside the third base bag.

Things were crazy in extra innings. The Padres bullpen shut the door on the Mets, using every pitcher in the 'pen except long man Anthony Bass who went 3 innings on Opening Day. They were able to save closer Huston Street for his first save of the season. Manager Bud Black expressed concern for his bullpen in the days moving forward, and said he really hopes his starters can step up and go deep into games. It is assumed that Nick Vincent and Brad Brach are unavailable for tomorrow's game as they each went 2 innings tonight. Luke Gregerson, Joe Thatcher, and Dale Thayer should be fine to go again tomorrow, as should Street should a save situation arise.

The Padres (1-1) play the rubber game of their 3-game series against the Mets (1-1) tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 PM ET at Citi Field. The Friars will send Andrew Cashner to the hill to face Shawn Marcum.

Mets Beat Padres, 4-3

Gregerson Loses Back-and-Forth Game

Everyone knew that the 15-inning game that the Padres played last night would hurt their bullpen moving forward. And it may have cost them a win this afternoon. Luke Gregerson gave up a solo home run to Ike Davis (his second of the day) in the 8th inning, allowing the Mets to break a 3-3 tie and win the ballgame.

The offense looked good today. Chase Headley drove in all 3 runs, but people were all getting on base in front of him even though Carlos Quentin and Yasmani Grandal got a day off. Utility man Alexi Amarista is 2-for-2 in pinch hits already this year, and could get a few starts with a bat like that.

The Padres (1-2) head to Denver to face the Rockies (1-2) tomorrow afternoon. Clayton Richard will start for the Friars against Christian Friedrich of the Rox.

Rockies Beat Padres, 5-4

Richard Falls Apart in Padres Loss

Clayton Richard was cruising through the first 4 innings of this game with a 4-0 lead. Then he lost his command, walked a few batters, and all of a sudden it was 5-4 Rockies. As everyone knows, no lead is safe in Coors Field.

The Padres led off the game with back-to-back homers from Chase Headley and Carlos Quentin. Quentin added a 2-run bomb in his next at-bat. But that was all the offense the Friars would get this afternoon. After Christian Friedrich was taken out, the Rockies' bullpen shut down the offense of the Padres. Hopefully the number of bullpen arms used helps the Padres through the rest of the series.

The Friars (1-3) face off against the Rockies (2-2) tomorrow evening at Coors Field. Tim Stauffer makes the start for the Padres against Chris Volstad.

Rockies Beat Padres, 5-4

Padres Bullpen Blows it Again

The Padres' bullpen blew the game for the 2nd night in a row and this time Brad Brach was the loser. The 'pen is obviously still tired out from that 15-inning game on April 3rd, but Bud Black is going to have to find a middle reliever that can lock down the innings between the starter and the setup men. The off day on Monday should help.

The Padres' offense was clicking once again, with Carlos Quentin blasting his 3rd home run of the year. But the pitching is going to have to be more consistent if the Padres want to contend this season.

The Friars (1-4) try to avoid the series sweep against the Rockies (3-2) tomorrow afternoon at Coors Field. Edinson Volquez (0-1, 11.25 ERA) goes for the Padres against Jorge De La Rosa (0-1, 5.40 ERA).
