Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

Los Angeles Regional
Hawaii Rainbows vs. Missouri State Bears
Game B
With both aces on the mound today, this game looked as if it could have been a close one from the start. Indeed it was. The top of the first was a rather quick one as the Rainbow hitters were set down in order. Missouri State was the first to claim a baserunner, on a walk in the first inning. That baserunner did not last long as he was thrown out trying to steal second on the next pitch. Both sides went 1-2-3 for the first and second innings.

In the third inning, Hawaii looked as if they were going to pitch some runs on the board. LaRue singled, and Zambrano followed it up with a double, but both runners were stranded on the basepath when Temko struck out looking to end the inning.

The fourth inning is when things got started, for both sides. Konerko led off the inning with a first pitch homerun over the right field wall. After a Taylor single, LaRue hit by pitch, and a Zambrano walk, the bases were loaded for McCullars and he delivered with an RBI single to right field, however the bases were left loaded when Cleary struck out to end the inning. Missouri State answered in the bottom half with a leadoff triple followed by a sacrifice fly. Nothing else was done for Missouri State. Hawaii had a 2-1 lead after the fourth inning.

After one two out hit a piece in the fifth inning, the sixth inning is where Hawaii extended their lead. After two walks to start the inning, Zambrano doubled to deep center for an RBI. McCullars then grounded out to third to score the second run of the inning and give Hawaii a 4-1 lead. This would prove to be all that was needed for ace Rory Seay and the Hawaii pitching staff. Missouri State had zero hits the rest of the game, and Hawaii advances on to play the four seed Washington, who beat USC five to four.

The Hawaii/Washington game will be played the next day at 1PM. That gives Hawaii less than 24 hours of rest before a big game. The winner of this game is automatically put in the championship game, where they would have to lose two games in a row to not advance to the Super Regionals. USC and Missouri State face off in an elimination game, at 6PM, or right after the finish of the Hawaii/Washington game. USC will be the away team.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

Los Angeles Regional
Hawaii Rainbows vs. Washington Huskies
Game C

The time has come. Its baseball time here in Los Angeles! The Rainbows are sending Josh Delgado to the mound to face of against Ruben Lissman. Delgado has thrown 102.1 innings with a 4-9 record, 4.22 ERA, 123 strikeouts and 33 walks. Lissman has thrown 97.2 innings for a 2-7 record, 3.41 ERA, 87 strikeouts and 39 walks. It looks as though the hitters today are going to be swinging the bat, and not watching much.

Zambrano leads off the first inning with a double down the left field line. McCullars singles to center, and the third base coach is waving Zambrano in! He slides, the call, SAFE! After four pitches the Rainbows have put up a run along with two hits. This could be trouble for the Huskies. Up steps Clayton Cleary. He has been batting in the 3 spot all season, he is easily the teams best hitter. The 3-1 count, that ball is pounded. Its going, going, deep over the center field fence for a two run homerun to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead after three hitters.

In the third inning, not much had happened since Cleary hit his homerun in the first. Hawaii has not gotten a guy on base since then. Washington is trying to rough up Delgado, watching pitch after pitch, trying to get deep in the count. In steps Cleary, after a McCullars groundout to third. Cleary is already 1 for 1 with a homerun to center, he takes the first pitch, ball outside. The next pitch, its on its wa-- its gone!! Another homerun for Clayton Cleary, this one smashed to right field. This gives Hawaii a 4-0 lead in only the third inning.

Washington saw nothing happening in the third inning, but Hawaii went back to work in the fourth. Floyd beat out an infield chopper to lead off the inning, Taylor followed with a ten pitch walk. LaRue singled to right field scoring Floyd from second without a throw. Zambrano doubled into the left center gap, to score Taylor from second, LaRue holding up at third. After a McCullars strike out, and a Cleary pop up to shallow right, there were guys on second and third with two outs. In stepped Jim Temko, and he laced one into left field, easily scoring both LaRue and Zambrano. Hawaii scored four runs in the inning to add to their lead, and make the score 8-0.

The bottom half of the fifth is what Washington needed to keep them in the game. They scored two runs on homerun to cut the lead to 8-2. Hopefully this could stop the Hawaii momentum.

That it did, until the eighth inning. McCullars led off with a single to left, Cleary followed with a double down the right field line to score him. Temko also hit a ball into right, a single, and scoring Cleary from second. Two runs in three hitters. Washington brought in a new pitcher to stop the bleeding. He didn't do that quite well. Konerko took the new pitcher's first pitch for a screamer right back at him, barely missing him, and into center. Too fast for Temko to score, he stopped at third. Nelson up next, with men on first and third. He hits a sacrifice fly into left field to score Temko. Floyd up next, with one out and a man on first, he singled into the left center gap and Konerko took the risk and slid in safely to third. Taylor up next, hit a chopper deep into the hole at short, but couldn't beat the throw out. However, Konerko scored, and Floyd was safe at second without the chance of a double play. That would do it as LaRue struck out swinging to end the inning and give Hawaii a 12-2 lead. All that they would need to do is hold the Huskies and the game would be over due to the 10-run rule.

That they did, and Hawaii advances to the Los Angeles Regional Championship, where they would have to lose two games to not advance to the Super Regionals. They will await the winner between the USC/Missouri State game versus Washington. Whomever they play will be playing a double header.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

Los Angeles Regional
Washington Huskies vs. Hawaii Rainbows
Game F

USC came off of a thrilling 4-2 victory against Missouri State to stay alive in the postseason. However, the next day they would have to face their Pac-10 foe, Washington who had already beat them once. Now it is win to keep playing. The winner plays Hawaii right after. That winner would be Washington, once again, by a score of 3-4. After scoring their three runs in the first two innings, USC couldn't score again, and an error in the fifth inning cost them the lead and ultimately the game.

Washington is playing their second game today. Their pitching staff looks toast, as only their starter for this game, and closer have not thrown yet today. The Washington starter for this game is their ace, big man Kirk Pineiro. He has a 4-7 record with 91 K's and 36 walks to go along with his 3.75 ERA in 84 innings. Hawaii is going to save their ace for an if needed game, and send out the old reliable Joe Theisen for this game. Theisen has a 4-1 record, a 3.54 ERA, 78 strikeouts compared to 36 walks, in 81.1 innings of work. Despite not pitching for the whole month of February, Theisen has been on point this year, and is looking to help his team out tremendously.

A change in the usual lineup for the Rainbows today, has McCullars leading off, Nelson batting second as the DH, Cleary in his usual three spot, Zambrano batting clean up, Temko hitting fifth, Konerko dropping down to sixth, Taylor moving up to seventh along with LaRue up to the eight spot, and Floyd in the nine hole for his speed. It is an interesting lineup, but if guys get on base things could get ugly quickly, just like the game between these two yesterday.

Washington scored early this time. With their ace on the mound it looked like it was all they were going to need. A leadoff walk, followed by a stolen base, then a double down the line scored the Washington run to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead through the fifth inning. Washington did not think that was enough, and in the sixth inning, put up another run after a triple and a sac fly. Washington led 2-0 and Hawaii had no answer for the big ace on the mound.

Finally, in the eighth inning, not late enough, the Rainbows were getting to Pineiro on the mound. Floyd led off the inning with a single into left, and McCullars followed that with a single of his own into left. Two men on, and Nelson popped up to short, followed by Cleary striking out looking. It looked as if the game was probably over right there. Hector Zambrano was up next, and he took his time. He had a full count, after 13 pitches that he had watched or, mainly, fouled off. That wasn't going to stop Zambrano. He took the next pitch deep over the centerfielder's head, and he raced into third with a standup triple that tied the game at two runs a piece. Temko ended the inning on the next pitch grounding out to third. That wasn't all for the Huskie's ace however. He stayed in the game and came out to pitch the ninth inning. Konerko doubled down the right field line on the first pitch of the inning, and then Pineiro walked Taylor on four pitches. That was it for the big guy.

With guys on first in second, and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, it looked as if the Rainbows were ready to pull the comeback off. Then things changed. Konerko got into a rundown inbetween second and third after falling asleep while leading off. He was out after three quick throws, but Taylor was smart enough to get to second base. Then to make things worse, LaRue struck out at the plate. In a matter of two pitches, the world laid on Johnny Floyd's hands. Two outs and a man on second. This was Floyd's time to shine, and did he deliver. After three straight fouls, and a 1-2 count, Floyd connected with a down and in fastball and sent it through the gap between short and third. The left fielder had little time to throw home and try and get Taylor, as he had a fantastic jump and slid in well ahead of the throw.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

San Francisco Super Regional
Hawaii Rainbows vs. San Francisco Dons
Game 1

Neither team could get much going on the basepaths. Hawaii jumped out to an early lead with a Clayton Cleary homerun in the first. Their only other run came on a Zambrano triple in the fifth inning. San Francisco did all of their work in the third and fourth innings. A solo homerun in the third tied the game at one run a piece, and a two run homerun in the fourth gave the Dons a 3-1 lead that proved to be all that they needed.

San Francisco Dons vs. Hawaii Rainbows
Game 2

San Francisco started off the scoring with a leadoff homerun in the top of the second inning. They never saw a runner again until the fifth inning, but that was short lived as the next pitch was bounced to Zambrano at short for a double play. Hawaii also saw their second runner on base during the bottom half of the fifth inning when Floyd led of the inning getting hit by a pitch. However nothing was done about it. The game still sat at 1-0 in the Dons favor after five innings.

The sixth inning is when things changed for the Rainbows. Cleary led off with a single into center and Temko followed that up with his own single into right field. With two men on, Konerko also singled into right field, but sharply hit that Cleary stopped at third. Floyd stepped in and delievered with a two RBI single. This is where the changed happened for the Rainbows. Temko slid in under the tag, head first, and ended up having to be taken out of the game with a dislocated pointer finger on his throwing hand. Team doctors immediately said he was out for the remainded of the season. Taylor followed this up, after a 15 minute delay, with an RBI double, then LaRue hit into a groundout that scored Floyd from third. The Rainbows were up 1-4 after the sixth inning.

Floyd added a solo homerun in the bottom half of the eighth inning to make the score 1-5, and Napoli closed the game out in his second inning of work.

Hawaii Rainbows vs. San Francisco Dons
Game 3
The deciding game! The Rainbows are sending Joe Theisen to the mound. He has been very big for them during games that matter. The Dons are sending what some people would a spot starter, C. Stovall. Stovall has only thrown 18 innings for the Dons but has struck out 18 hitters. Valderrama takes over second base for the injured Temko. The Rainbows are sure hoping that he isn't going to be a deciding factor.

Both teams saw a pitchers duel until the top of the fifth when the Rainbows struck first after a Konerko double, Nelson groundout to advance Konerko, and a Floyd single to score a run. Theisen did his thing in the bottom half of the inning, and then the Rainbows went back to work in the sixth. McCullars and Valderrama both singled to start the inning, and Cleary followed it up with a three run homer to give the Rainbows a huge 4-0 lead.

San Francisco fought to get on the board, but finally got to Theisen when he walked the leadoff man, then gave up a double to the next batter. Theisen was pulled and Salazar entered. The Dons tacked on one more run to cut the lead to 4-2. The Rainbows couldn't extend the lead in the top of the ninth. Enter, A.J. DeJean! An easy 1-2-3 inning sent the Rainbows dog piling on the Dons homefield.

Congrats on making it to the CWS! Not an easy road. Only going to get tougher. Pitt made it to the championship in my first season. Keep up the good work and good luck!

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

Its the last two weeks of the season. Omaha, Nebraska has welcomed the eight teams to the city for their time being. Three games have already been played. Fan favorite, Arizona lost in the opener to San Diego 2-0, and the next game saw Florida chomping down on the Rice Owls by a score of 11-5. On the other side of the bracket, Pittsburgh showed what they are capable of by beating North Carolina 5-3.

Now playing, Hawaii vs. Florida State. Rory Seay is getting the start for the Rainbows. Seay comes into the game with an 8-5 record with a 2.76 ERA.

The scoring got started in the fourth inning after three straight hits by Nelson, McCutchen, and Valderrama. Valderrama singled home Nelson on a ball through the gap on the right side of the infield. LaRue followed it up with a double down the right field line that scored two more runs. Puffer did the same, except down the left field line, scoring LaRue from second base. Floyd went back down the right field line for another double, and another run scored for the Rainbows. At the end of the fourth, the Rainbows led Florida State by a score of 5-0.

Hawaii tacked on another run in the sixth after back-to-back-to-back singles. Cleary had the RBI that scored Puffer from second base. After the sixth inning, Hawaii led 6-0. Florida State got there first hit in the seventh inning, on a double by Ogrodnik. Florida State could get nothing going.

To start the eighth inning, LaRue led off with a double, and Puffer singled him home to make the score 7-0. A bases loaded single by Konerko scored two more runs, and another single by Nelson scored another one. Hawaii led 10-0 with runners on first and third with one out. McCutchen grounded out to second scoring another run. At the end of the eighth, and the game, the score was 11-0.
