Our pitching staff is very young this year. We are going to have to rely heavily on the incoming freshman, as they will be the majority of our staff. Three freshman will be our starters, to start the season. We have five lefties on our staff this season, with two of them being starters. Jake Feeney will be our ace, followed by James Buckley, and then Scott Desme. Our long relievers, or spot starters, will be Jeff Sparks, Mo Salazar, and Duaner Nall. A.J. DeJean will once again be our closer.

Our lineup against right handers will have Zambrano leading off playing short stop, followed by McCullars in center. Temko will bat third and play secon base, followed by Taylor in right field. Nady will DH and bat fifth, followed by Henderson at third base. McNally will play left field and bat seventh, followed by LaRue catching, and McCutchen will round out the lineup playing first base.

Our lineup against the southpaws will have Zambrano leading off playing short stop, with McCullars patrolling center field and batting second, followed by Temko hitting third and playing second base. Batting cleanup and playing first base will be McCutchen, followed by the designated hitter McCarty. LaRue will catch and bat sixth in the order, followed by the right fielder Taylor. Henderson will bat eighth and play third base, and Samardzija will finish the lineup playing left field.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

Team Goals
Level 3 Pitching: Have two pitchers with 10 season wins
Level 3 Conditioning: One player named 2nd Team All-American
Level 3 Fielding: Qualify for Super Regionals
Level 2 Hitting: One player hit .375

We come in to the season ranked #23 in the preseason poll. However, we have a big reloading year on our hands. We lost our three starting pitchers in our rotation, our starting third baseman, backup catcher, and starting right fielder. We have twelve games on our schedule for the month of February to see how this team will react to the new level of play (freshmen), and adapt to the new team.

Our month of February consists of home series' against Texas Tech, UC Riverside, and San Diego before we hit the road to play against South Alabama, USC, and BYU. Texas Tech and UC Riverside are the only two teams not ranked in the top 30 on the Baseball America Preseason Poll.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

We started off the year on the right foot. We swept the series against Texas Tech by a score of 6-5 the first game and 8-4 the second game.

Before the series against UC Riverside, the AD sent an email to the head ball coach. The email said that, if we hit .295 as a team against San Diego we will be able to get some new baseball bats for the team. We had the option to get some Worth bats or Easton bats, and the team demoed both of them. The team, as a whole decided to go with the Worth bats.

After the first game against UC Riverside, in which we lost 11-6, the trainers gave word to the head coach that McKay Henderson was injured with a pulled hamstring and will be out for at least two to three weeks. Tony Maday will take over the duties at third base for the time being. Maday will drop down in the order to the number seven spot against righties, and will stay in the number eight spot against southpaws. We lost the second game to UC Riverside 3-0, putting us at a two and two record to start the year.

We were swept in our series against San Diego, also. We lost the first game 13-7 and the second game 6-5 in 13 innings. We were also unable to successfully complete the challenge to earn the Worth bats. We will have to wait until next time.

We go into our series with #16 South Alabama (1-3) at 2-4. We are still receiving votes for the top 25, placing us at #32 in the nation. We have had some pitchers with arm fatigue, making them not throw in games. One of those pitchers is Jake Feeney, our supposed ace of the staff. The transition from high school baseball to college baseball has its trouble on arms. Players are having to start earlier in the year than they are used to. Jake Feeney made his first start of the year against South Alabama, in which the team lost 7-1. The team also lost the second game 4-3.

After a long week of no games, just practice, the team heads to Southern California to take on USC for a two game series. Before the series started, the athletic director emailed the head ball coach another sponsor challenge. This challenge was to strike out 15 BYU hitters to earn some new practice gear for the team.

We split the series with USC by winning the first game 2-1 in 11 innings, and losing the second game 3-2, also in 11 innings. Right now, our team is having trouble scoring runs. For the most part, our really young pitching staff is having trouble. However, in the long-run, this will help us out. Our pitchers will gain experience and our hitters will come around as usual.

We sit at 3-7 entering the final series of the month of February. It has been a rough month, but we hope to get rolling to help with the season. BYU comes into the game at 5-5 and ranked #24 in the nation. We lost the first game to BYU 7-4, but our pitching staff did strike out seven of their hitters. Going into game two, we need eight more and we would really love to win the game. Just before the second game started, trainers gave word to the head ball coach that McKay Henderson has recovered from his injury. He was placed bag into the lineup. We won the second game against BYU, to split the series, by a score of 7-0. We did fail to complete the challenge though.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

We had a decent month, going 8-6 during March. We started the month by splitting with Texas Tech and Cal State Northridge. We then swept both Saint Mary's and University of New Orleans. After that we took one of three games from both Arkansas State and Northern Iowa.

We were hooked up by Rawlings with some new gloves after completing the sponsor challenge by not committing more than three errors as a team against Arkansas State.

We start of the month of April by playing our first conference series of the year. These five games are also the start of a 14 day, 14 game home stand.

Our first conference games will be against Louisiana Tech (10-16).

In game one, Buckley (4-3) got the start. This game went into extra innings as the Rainbows would come from behind to win the ball game by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings.

In game two of the series against Louisiana Tech, Desme (1-2) got the start against the Bulldogs' ace who is 0-4 on the mound. Again, this game went into extra innings, and again, it went to the bottom half of the 11th inning. This game was won on a walkoff homerun by Hector Zambrano.

We would end the series losing the next game 7-4, and winning the last two games 2-13 in 8 innings and 2-5. After a 4-1 start to the conference season, we stood at second place behind Fresno State.

We then took on Stanford for a quick two game non-conference series. We split the series with Stanford winning 9-10 the first game, and losing 5-4 in 11 innings the second game.

We start our second conference series, against San Jose State, with a day game. Feeney (3-1) got the start for the Rainbows. We had a bit of lineup changes today, as some guys were expressing fatigue. Maday switched to catcher, as McIntyre is patrolling center, and Nady is playing third while Henderson is the DH today.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

We ended our homestand for the month, playing against #4 New Mexico (27-11). The two game non-conference series had the AD wanting us to score 12 runs so that we could get some new cleats. We split the series, losing the first game 11-9 and winning the second game 10-2. We successfully completed the challenge that the AD gave us, and earned some new Nike Shox cleats.

Sitting at 20-20, we go into an away conference series against the number one team in the conference, #12 Fresno State (29-11). Taking two games from this team would be considered a huge victory for this series. However, that did not happen. We lost the first four games by a scores of 5-7, 3-7, 2-4, and 0-3. After the fourth game, word was given by doctors that A.J. DeJean would miss the rest of the season possibly with a fractured arm when he took a line drive back to his non-throwing arm. The last game was a do-or-die mentality and the Rainbows won the game 3-2.

We ended the month by starting a series with Nevada (16-29) in which we lost 4-6.

After starting the Nevada series off with a loss, we bounced back to win the series. We won game two by a score of 6-4, lost game three 4-6, and won the last two games 12-6 and 2-1. Winning four of five games moved us up to third in the conference with an 11-9 record, and moved us to a total record of 24-26.

Our next five games were against San Jose State. They were second in the conference while we were third. We went back and forth with them winning the first game 5-8, then losing the second game 14-6. The third game went in our favor as we won 6-7, and then lost game four 7-4. The fifth and final game of the series was going to decide everything, however we lost the game 6-1. Along with losing the last game of the series we also lost Daniel St. Julien for 1-2 week with major wrist tendonitis. He could possibly be out for the rest of the season.

We headed into our final five games of the year, sitting two games back of San Jose State for the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The whole league was within six games, so depending on how we play, depends on where we find ourselves at the end of the season. We won the first three games by scores of 7-5, 6-5, and 8-2, before losing the last two games by scores of 2-4 and 2-9. Despite the last-half of the season effort, the Rainbows failed to qualify for the postseason, thus ending their season at a disappointing 29-31 record.

Re: Finding the Pot of Gold: Hawaii Rainbows MVP 06 NCAA Baseball

The 2009 Hawaii Rainbows are coming into the season, having just missed having a .500 record last season. This year they bring in multiple D1 transfers as well as two freshman and a JUCO transfer. These players will add some great experience to the roster, as well as some great talent that was missing.

Pitching Rotation
Our ace on the year will be Jake Feeney. He progressed really well from last year and looks like he can secure a spot in the rotation for the rest of his career. His above-average freshman season in the rotation will help him. The number two will be Duaner Nall. He was also in the rotation last year and that will help the staff with experience. The back end of the rotation, Dustan Bocachica, is a transfer from a local community college where he was closer that had 18 saves. Our fourth (spot) starter for this season will be Scott Desme, who was in the rotation last season, but we feel he will be better out of the bullpen on the weekends.

Jeff Sparks and Mo Salazar will be our long relievers and or spot starters for midweek games. Our first guys out of the bullpen this year will consist of Matt Canham, Daniel St. Julien, Blake Sibley, and James Buckley. These four guys have proved that they can provide immediate relief and throw strikes when asked to do so. Our setup guy will be Alex Chandler. Last season he ended up getting the save opportunities due to A.J. DeJean's injury. This season he will be the first guy to start shutting the door on games. A.J. DeJean will be our closer once again. Coming back from his injury, look for him to have a great season.

Catchers
Danys Burkett, a transfer from Michigan State will get the majority of the starts this year. Last season he played in 13 games and hit .350 with 2 homeruns. This season he will hit in the middle of the order to provide some power to the lineup. The backup will be Traz Gomez, a redshirt freshman that walked on in the middle of the year last season. Dru LaRue will be the last resort for our catchers this season. Despite being the starting catcher this year, it seems our pitchers have better relationships with the previous two catchers stated.

1st Base
Our starting first baseman against right handed pitchers will be Traz Gomez. He will be starting at first that way we can have his bat in the lineup. Branden McCarty will be the first baseman against left handed throwers. McCarty will DH against righties while Gomez will DH against the southpaws. Brandon Buford will be redshirting this season.

2nd Base
Jim Temko will be starting at second base for the third straight season. We fully expect him to continue his dominance as a hitter and keep providing forsure defense. Doug Pabst will be the backup for when there needs to be any relief in the middle infield. Joel Wolfe will be not making the travel roster due to ineligibility caused from poor grades the past semester.

Short Stop
Hector Zambrano will be our starter for his fourth straight year. We fully expect him to have another great year at the plate as well as in the field. He will hit leadoff once again and we are looking for him to provide speed and knowledge to our younger players. Doug Pabst will be the backup for when there are needs of relief.

Third Base
Matt Gill will be the starter at third base. The transfer from TCU played in 34 games in two seasons for the Horned Frogs before transfer to Hawaii for his final two seasons. Gill has a .293 career average. McKay Henderson will be the backup despite being the starter last season. We are expecting Henderson to provide experience off the bench. Tony Maday will be the third guy in at third, but he will start in the outfield. Vinnie McCLaskey will be redshirting this season.

Outfield
Nic McNally will be our starter in left field for the season. He hit .287 last season in 29 games played. Brian McCullars will start in centerfield once again. His senior leadership will help out McNally and Maday, as well as help McIntyre of the bench. Tony Maday will be starting in right field. Despite him being a third baseman, he has proved that he can play in the outfield just so that he can be put into the lineup. Peter McIntyre will come in from the bench whenever needed. Matt Nady and Heath Samardzija are both redshirting this season.

Our team goals for this season is to make the playoffs. Our goals to help us reach that mark is to have one pitcher have 10 season wins, one player named 3rd Team All-American, and to have one player with 45 RBIs. All four of these goals can be accomplished with this team.
