Offense Backs Jackson in Win

Pittsburgh -- The Chicago Cubs gather their 2nd win on the season as the defeated the host Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 in game 2 of a 3 game series. Cubs starter Edwin Jackson was outstanding on the mound going 7 innings, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits and 7 strikeouts while only walking 2 Pirates.

The offense got started early for the Cubs as the leadoff hitter Emilio Bonifacio singled to start the game. Bonifacio stole 2nd and was driven in on a RBI single by Anthony Rizzo.

In the 6th, the Cubs were able to push across 3 runs to make the lead 4-0. Wellington Castillo singled to right, scoring Starlin Castro, then Nate Schierholtz singled to right scoring Rizzo. Later in the inning with runners on first and second, Jackson helped his own cause by driving in Castillo with an RBI line drive just over the first baseman's glove.

The Pirates would get some offense going in the 8th inning when Andrew McCutchen hit a solo home run off Cubs reliever Carlos Villanueva. Villanueva would settle down however to get out of the inning with only the 1 run allowed.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the 9th inning after Cubs closer Jose Veras walked the bases loaded with one out. Pinch hitter, and the Pirates #5 prospect, Alen Hanson singled to centerfield scoring Russell Martin, but a great throw by Bonifacio from center would nab Gaby Sanchez at the plate. Veras would get Starling Marte to strike out to end the game and record his 2nd save in as many games.

The Cubs and Pirates round up this opening 3 game series Thursday as the Cubs look to start with an opening series sweep of division foe Pittsburgh. Jason Hammel will get the call for Chicago and will square off against Wandy Rodriguez for the Pirates.

As a Cubs fan, I'm looking forward to seeing what your plan for the Cubs is. Good luck this year, I'll be following!

McCutchen Leads Bucs in Finale

Pittsburgh -- Chicgo Cubs drop the final game of a 3 game set with the Pirates on Thursday at PNC park. Pirates star Andrew McCutchen led the way for the Bucs with a 2-4 day at plate while collecting 3 RBI on the day. Pirates starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez had a solid out, picking up the win after pitching 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and striking out 5. Cubs starter Jason Hammel picks up the loss after he was pulled in the 6th inning with 1 out. Hammel gave up 4 runs on 4 hits but did show signs of brilliance striking out 9 batters and retiring 13 straight Pirates at one point.

The offense for the Pirates got started in the 1st inning when McCutchen drove a double to center, driving in Gregory Polanco.

The Cubs would respond in the top of the second inning with 2 runs of their own. The first coming way of the pitcher Hammel after he singled to left with the bases loaded, scoring Mike Olt. The next batter, Emilio Bonifacio, grounded into a fielder's choice while scoring Nate Schierholtz from 3rd.

The next 4 innings would become quite the pitchers duel as Rodriguez and Hammel matched each other pitch for pitch with each pitcher retiring a string of at least 10 batters in a row at one point.

The Pirates would break through however in the 6th inning as the pushed across the decisive 3 runs to put them in the drivers seat. McCutchen again was the story in this inning driving in Jose Tabata and Starling Marte with a 2 RBI single to left. After a Pedro Alvarez double that advanced McCutchen to 3rd, Clint Barmes grounded out to 2nd baseman Darwin Barney, but the situational hitting paid off as McCutchen was able to score easily on the ground ball to the right side.

Jason Grilli entered the game in the 9th for the Pirates and put the side down in order to record his 1st save of the 2014 season.

The Cubs will resume action Friday as the return to Wrigley for their home opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. Travis Wood will get the start for the Cubbies.

Javier Baez

Rank: 1
Iowa Cubs (AAA)
ETA: 2014
Position: SS
Age: 21, DOB: 12/01/1992
Bats: R, Throws: R
Height: 6' 0", Weight: 190
Drafted: 2011, 1st (9) - CHC

Scouting Grades:
Hit: 60 | Power: 70 | Run: 50 | Arm: 65 | Field: 50 | Overall: 65

Baez has lived up to his lofty expectations since the Cubs selected him eighth overall in 2011. He reached Double-A Tennessee two years later as a 20-year-old, and his 75 extra-base hits and 111 RBIs led the Minor Leagues.

Baez generates incredible bat speed, resulting in big power. He also has the ability to hit for average if he is able to develop more plate discipline. But Baez is a good bad-ball hitter and often finds a way to get his bat on the ball in spite of his aggressiveness.

Baez isn't as advanced defensively. His average speed begets solid range, and he has a good arm, but he still commits too many errors. Some scouts feel Baez is destined for a move to third or second base, which would be eased by Starlin Castro's presence in Chicago. No matter where he plays, Baez's bat has the ability to make him a star.

Castro's Homer back Wood's Gem

Chicago -- The Cubs pitching has proved to be their strong point through 4 games this season and on Friday it was no different as starter Travis Wood pitched a gem. Wood tossed 8 innings of shut out baseball while only surrendering 5 hits and striking out 8. Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro provided much of the offense as he collected 2 of the team's 5 hits including a solo shot to left center in the first inning off Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick.

After exiting the previous series against Pittsburgh without a hit, Castro got things going in the home opener as he hit a 3-2 fastball over the left field ivy in the top of the first inning. It would be the only run that either team would score in the game as both pitchers battled throughout the game. After Castro's solo shot, the next batter Anthony Rizzo nearly made it back to back homers as he hit a long double to the right center field wall. Castro would collect another hit in the 6th inning on a liner to center.

Wood would pitch a brilliant 8 innings before turning it over to Pedro Strop who would shut the door and pick up his 1st save of the season. Regular closer Jose Veras was not used due to making 2 appearances in the first series against the Pirates.

Carlos Ruiz led the Phillies offense with a nice 2-3 day at the plate. The Phillies had scoring chances but couldn't convert with runners in scoring position as Wood would limit the Phillies bats.

Game 2 of this series will take place Saturday at Wrigley Field as we will see the bottom of the rotation for both squads. The pitching matchup will be Roberto Hernandez (0-0) for the Phillies taking on Jake Arrieta (0-0) for the Cubs.

Philly Rides Big Inning to Down Cubs

Chicago -- The Philadelphia Phillies scored 5 runs in the top of the first inning and didn't look back as they take game 2 against the Cubs Saturday at Wrigley. Philly used a patient approach early against Cubs starter Jake Arrieta as they drew 4 walks and used 4 hits to push across 5 runs in the first. Ryan Howard starting the scoring with a bases loaded base hit that scored Ben Revere and Jimmy Rollins. After Chase Utley walked to load the bases again, catcher Carlos Ruiz walked on a full count, scoring Howard. Arrieta would continue to struggle as he walked the next batter in Cody Asche, scoring another run in Dominic Brown. The first inning scoring concluded with a sac fly by pitcher Roberto Hernandez, which scored Utley.

The Cubs would try to get back into the game as the trimmed the Philadelphia lead to 5-2 in the second inning on a 2-run homer by Nate Schierholtz. The homer was his 2nd on the season.

The Cubs would use 2 more runs in the 6th to crawl back into the game and cut the lead to 1 run. Anthony Rizzo hit a solo shot to center field and Mike Olt scored as a result of a throwing error on what should have been a routine throw by the sure handed Utley.

The Phillies would push the lead back to 6-4 in the 7th inning when Jimmy Rollins scored after Utley grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice.

Philadelphia would hand the ball over to closer Jonathan Papelbon in the 9th inning. He would surrender a base hit but got some help on a great play by Chase Utley and would record the save.

The Cubs and Phillies will play the rubber game of this 3 game series Sunday afternoon at Wrigley. Aces will be on the mound for both squads as Cliff Lee (1-0) faces off against Jeff Samardzija (1-0).
