Cubs Stifle Cardinals in Series Opener

St. Louis -- The visiting Chicago Cubs took the first game of a 3 game series against the Cardinals by a score of 3-0. Cubs starter Jake Arrieta had a solid outing going 6.0 innings while allowing only 3 hits and fanning 10 Cardinals. Arrieta came out hot and didn't let his first hit up until the 5th inning. Rookie Arismendy Alcantara led the Cubs offensively scoring 2 runs and driving in another.

Scoring in this one got started in the second inning when Alcantara, starting his second career game, tripled in the right center field gap, scoring Wellington Castillo on the play. Arrieta helped his own cause by driving in Alcantara with a base hit that got through the infield and into left.

The Cubs added another run in the 6th inning when Junior Lake hit a liner to left for a single to score Alcantara who crossed the plate for the second time in the game.

The Cubs were not great with runners in scoring position in this game, going 2-11 and leaving 11 men stranded on base. Starlin Castro struggled, going 0-5 in this one, dropping his batting average to .103.

Arrieta got the win for the Cubs, moving him to 1-1 on the season. Tyler Lyons got hit with the loss for the Cardinals, causing his record to fall to 0-1. Cubs closer Jose Veras picked up his 4th save on the season.

The next game will be Saturday at Busch Stadium. The Cubs will call on ace Jeff Samardzija (1-1, 3.09 ERA). The Cards will counter with their ace Adam Wainwright (0-0, 1.93 ERA).

Baker Gives Cubs Edge in Pitchers Duel

St. Louis -- The Cubs got some clutch hitting by backup catcher John Baker to score the go ahead run in the 8th inning in what was for the most part a pitcher's duel between aces Jeff Samardzija and Adam Wainwright. Both pitcher's surrendered an early run but then matched each other pitch for pitch til they departed the ball game. Bonifacio led the way for the Cubs offense going 3-4 with a run and a RBI.

The Cubs jumped on Wainwright early in the first inning by starting the game with 3 straight hits. Emilio Bonifacio doubled down the left field line to lead off the game. He was followed by single to right by Junior Lake. The next batter, Starlin Castro singled up the middle to score Bonifacio. Wainwright would calm down and get out of the inning with just the one run allowed.

The Cardinals answered back in the 2nd inning to knot the game up at 1 a piece. That run came on a solo home run to right by all star catcher Yadier Molina. The home run was Molina's 3rd of the season.

The offense would take a back seat over the next 6 innings as Smaradzija and Wainwright dueled it out. In the 8th inning, backup catcher John Baker capitalized on a leadoff walk by Anothony Rizzo by smoking a RBI double in the right center field gap.

The Cubs would add another insurance run in the 9th inning. After a lead off double by pinch hitter Ryan Sweeney, Bonifacio sent one back up the middle for a single to center, scoring Sweeney on the play.

Jose Veras got the ball in the 9th to make his second straight appearance. He would walk 2 batters but would retire the side to pick up save number 5 on the season, tying him for the NL lead in saves.

Both starters picked up no decisions in this contest as the bullpens would work the final 3 innings for each team. Wesley Wright would get the win for the Cubs, earning him his first win in 2014. Sidewinder Randy Choate got the loss, his first of the season. Jose Veras picked up save number 5.

The 3rd and final game of this series will be on Sunday as the Cubs look to go for the sweep of their rival Cardinals. Cubs will turn to Edwin Jackson (1-0, 0.69 ERA), who has pitched great in his first 2 outings. The Cardinals will counter with the young Michael Wacha (0-2, 9.90 ERA), who has struggled in his 2 starts this season.

Erros Haunt Cubs in Loss to Cardinals

St. Louis -- The Chicago Cubs dropped the final game of this 3 game weekend series with rival St. Louis as a result of 2 fielding errors and 2 baserunning errors in key spots in the game. Manager Rick Renteria voiced his displeasure saying "We can't be out there making those kind of mistakes in close games. You just can't win that way."

The Cubs pushed across the first run of the game in the 4th inning on a Anthony Rizzo RBI double, scoring Starlin Castro who singled and stole second base.

The Cardinals got that run back in the bottom half of the 4th on the first fielding error by the Cubs. Cardinals big first baseman Matt Adams hit a ball to deep center where Ryan Kalish looked like he had a beat on it. However, Kalish misplayed the fly ball, allowing Adams to come all the way around to score. Kalish got hit with an E8 on the play.

In the 8th inning, the Cardinals took the lead Matt Carpenter hit a sac fly to left fielder Ryan Sweeney, scoring pinch hitter Peter Bourjos who tripled with 1 out in the inning.

The Cubs would get a baserunner in the top of the 9th inning when Cards closer Trevor Rosenthal walked Castro to lead off the inning but Castro would get picked off at first on a good move by Rosenthal. The inning would get calm from there as Rosenthal retired the next 2 batters in Rizzo and Mike Olt to earn the save.

Cardinals reliever Jason Motte would earn the win after relieving starter Michael Wacha in the 7th inning to push his record to 1-0. Cubs lefty southpaw reliever Wesley Wright would get the loss making his record 1-1. Wright picked up the win in Saturday's ball game. Rosenthal would earn his 2nd save on the year. It was also St. Louis' 2nd win on the season after a slow start.

The Cubs will take the day off Monday as the travel to the Bronx for a 2 game inter-league series with the New York Yankees on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cubs will call on Jason Hammel (1-1, 3.86 ERA) for Tuesday night's game. Yankees will give the ball to Michael Pineda (1-1, 2.31 ERA).

Pineda Goes the Distance as Yankees beat Cubs

Bronx, NY -- Yankees starter Michael Pineda was dominant in this one, going the distance to pick up the complete game shutout as the Yankees beat the visiting Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Jackie Robinson Day. Pineda's final line: 9.0 IP, 5 H, BB, 6K.

The Cubs threatened in the 2nd inning after back to back singles by Anthony Rizzo and Mike Olt, but Pineda would get Wellington Castillo to ground into the 4-6-3 double play to work out of danger early.

The Yankees would get on the board in the 3rd inning after Cubs starter Jason Hammel loaded the bases with nobody out. Jacoby Ellisbury hit a soft blooper to center that would drop in for a base hit, scoring Francisco Cervelli and Kelly Johnson to put the Bombers up 2-0.

New York would add a 3rd run in the 5th inning when Kelly Johnson scored his 2nd run of the game after Ellisbury grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

Pineda would roll from there as there only allowing 1 hit in the last 4 innings to finish off the complete game shutout. With the win, Pineda improved his record to 2-1. Jason Hammel received the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the year.

The Cubs and Yankees will square off again on Wednesday for the final game of this quick 2 game series. Travis Wood (1-1, 2.08 ERA) will get the start for the Cubs. David Phelps (1-0, 5.54 ERA) will make his 3rd start for the Yankees.

The Captain Leads Yankees to Sweep of Cubs

Bronx, NY -- The Yankees used a pair of 2 run home runs by Derek Jeter and Carlos Beltran to take the final game of this quick 2 game turnaround. In a pretty offensive game, the Yankees were able to gain an edge over the visiting Cubs with great hitting with runners on base.

The Yankees scored in the second inning when Derek Jeter went yard into the right field seats, scoring Alex Rodriguez in the process. The home run was Jeter's 2nd of the season as he looks to gain ground on the all time hits list.

The Cubs picked up 1 in the top of the 3rd inning on a bizarre play. With Junior Lake on 2nd and Starlin Castro on 1st with a full count and 2 outs, the runners got started. Mike Olt hit one to the right side that deflected off second baseman Brian Roberts and kicked into shallow right field. The full count allowed Lake to come around to score on what was later ruled a single for Olt.

The Yankees put 2 more on the board in the bottom half of the 3rd inning on the 2 run home run by Beltran, which scored Roberts. The home run was Beltran's 3rd on the season. Both Yankees home runs came off Cubs started Travis Wood.

The Cubs fought hard late in the game to pull with in one run, scoring a run in the 6th and 7th inning. In the 6th, Wellington Castillo doubled to left center field, scoring Olt from first base. In the 7th, Anthony Rizzo hit a sac fly to the left fielder Brett Gardner, which was deep enough to score Luis Valbuena.

The Yankees bullpen took over from there, holding the Cubs at bay in their last 2 at bats. David Phelps picked up the win for the Yankees making his record 2-0. Travis Wood picked up his second loss in the game pushing his record to 1-2. David Robertson picked up the save for the Yankees, it was his 5th on the season.

The Cubs will get the day off Thursday to travel back to Wrigley field where they will host the Cincinnati Reds in a 3 game weekend series. Jake Arrieta (1-1, 4.09 ERA) will start game 1 for the Cubs. Mat Latos (2-0, 0.36 ERA), who leads the MLB in ERA will start for the Reds.
