PHILADELPHIA - Everyone is human, and
Cliff Lee showed that to a nearly sold out crowd of 40,000 at The Bank on this nice Sunday afternoon. For the Phillies, the weather was the only thing nice today, as the home team did more than struggle for 8 straight innings.
Cliff Lee started the game in his usual dominant fashion, allowing only one run in 7 innings, striking out 9. However, in the top of the 8th, Lee allowed a run and proceeded to load the bases with two outs. He was replaced by relief pitcher
Justin De Fratus who gave up a bases clearing double to Curtis "I've struck out three times already today" Granderson on a 0-2 count. Because the baserunners were inherited by De Fratus, Lee gets credit for all of the runs.
The Phillies had no answer for opposing pitcher Bartolo Colon, who went 6.2 innings, only giving up 4 hits. Maybe hitters were too busy admiring how small Colon's legs were compared to his upper body, because the Phillies had no plate discipline through those 6 innings. Weak ground balls and useless popouts were the story of Colon's start, as he only got the chance to strike out one batter. He was throwing meatballs, and the Phillies were swinging away.
It took 5 whole innings for Colon's pitch count to reach
20.. Eric Karros made the comment that "these hitters are swinging at everything, the starter hasn't even worked up a sweat." He didn't realize however, that he was talking about Bartolo Colon, who worked up a sweat walking to the mound in the bottom of the first.
Thankfully for the Phillies, Kyle Farnsworth stayed in the game entirely too long and gave up two solo home runs to
Marlon Byrd and
Darin Ruf. Manager Ryne Sandberg probably shook both players hands for saving him the humiliation of just flat out having to say "our team sucked today" in the post game press conference. The Phillies didn't stop there though, as they recorded a 6 hit 9th inning, coming up just shy of a miraculous comeback.
Cody Asche popped out weakly with runners on second and third.
The Phillies split this two game series with the Mets, and are now at an even .500 for the season (28-28). The Phillies will stay in the division and play the Washington Nationals after a much needed day of rest.
c'mon, look at this guy.
