Yeah but I almost feel as if those weren't real games. Now as we welcome the Indians, I feel that we can see who we really are.

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

The Tigers hit into 4 double-plays, make mistakes against Cleveland, lose 5-3 at home. The loss snaps a 5 game winning streak for the Tigers.

Game #12
Cleveland Indians.png @ DetroitTigersLogo2WEWQE.jpg

Detroit, MI. April 15, 2014 --- Do you know how frustrating it is to lose a game where you beat yourselves?

That is exactly what Detroit did Tuesday night against the Indians. Either that or the Indians pitching staff are double-play experts. Indians pitchers induce 4 double-plays tonight as they beat the Tigers 5-3, snapping Detroit's 5 game winning streak.

Indian starter Corey Kluber went 7 innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs. He only managed to strikeout 2 Tigers in his time on the mound.

Tigers SP Max Scherzer went 5 and a third, giving up 7 hits, walking 3 and gave up 5 runs, only 3 of those earned however. Scherzer picked up his second loss of the season.

SS Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-5 with a double and a triple for the Indians. 1B Jason Giambi journeyman was 2-5 with 2 RBI. It looks like the Indians are starting Giambi at first this season and are experimenting with C/IF Carlos Santana at 3B. LF Michael Brantley also collected 2 hits in the contest for the Tribe.

The Tigers collected 9 hits, everyone but Miguel Cabrera has a base hit. LF Andy Dirks had 2 of the 9, one of those being an RBI double. RF Torii Hunter also had a 2B, going 1-4.

Tiger CF Austin Jackson was 1-2 with a walk a sac bunt, his average now .340 on the young year.

The real story of this ballgame for the Tigers was their inability to score runs when they needed to. Instead they frustratingly hit into 4 double-plays most times killing any momentum.

Indian closer John Axford picked up his 4th save of the season for the Tribe pitching a scoreless 9th.

The series now turns towards game 2 Wednesday with projected starters being Anibal Sanchez (2-0 1.46) versus Josh Tomlin (1-0 1.93).

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

Anibal Sanchez not sharp as Tigers drop another close game to the Tribe 6-4 at Comerica.

Game #13
Cleveland Indians.png @ DetroitTigersLogo2WEWQE.jpg

Detroit, MI. April 16, 2014 --- Tigers SP Anibal Sanchez was not very good today. Sanchez allowed 10 hits in 6 innings, giving up 6 runs while only striking out 3. His record now sits at 2-1 on the year.

Opposing him was Tribe starter Josh Tomlin who went 6 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits wasn't great either but his team gave him just enough at the plate. Tomlin is now 2-0 on the young year.

Leading the way for the Indians was newly converted 3B Carlos Santana. Santana was 3-4 with a homer against the Tigers and 4 RBI. His average now sits at .426 on the year (20-47).

SS Asdrubal Cabrera again had a good game against the Tigers going 2-4 at the dish, he also scored 2 runs. DH Lonnie Chisenhall was also 2-4 on the day.

The Indians had 12 hits, every Indian safely reaching base except for 1B Nick Swisher who was a healthy 0-5 with 2 strikeouts.

The Tigers sat OF Torii Hunter hoping a day off may help him get his head back into the game. In his place RF Andy Dirks was 2-4 on the day. CF Austin Jackson was also 2-4 with 2 stolen bases. That gives Jackson now 6 so far this year.

The Tigers 2-3-4 hitters of 2B Ian Kinsler, 1B Miguel Cabrera and DH Victor Martinez combined were 1-11.

The Indians bullpen (Scott Atchison, Bryan Shaw, John Axford) was very good again Wednesday against the Tigers as they pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and only 1 hit. Axford picked up his 2nd consecutive save against the Tigers and 5th of the year.

With this loss the Tigers now sit a game behind the Indians in the AL Central standings. The Indians are 8-7, followed by the Tigers (6-7), Royals (6-8), White Sox (5-10) and Twins (4-10). The Tigers are 5-5 in their last ten games.

The final game of this three game series see Drew Smyly (1-1 0.71) versus Justin Masterson (1-2 9.64) at 1:08 p.m. Thursday.

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

Drew Smyly is sensational on the mound, dominates Indians and powers the Tigers back to .500.

Game #14
Cleveland Indians.png @ DetroitTigersLogo2WEWQE.jpg

Detroit, MI. April 17, 2014 --- Tigers SP Drew Smyly is starting the 2014 campaign as a man on a mission. Thursday Smyly pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run and striking out 7 Indians while earning his second victory of the season. More importantly, in 19 innings of work so far in '14, Smyly has an ERA of 0.95.

Besides Smyly dominating on the mound, the Tigers had a successful strategy at the plate against Indians SP Justin Masterson. Masterson was retired after 4 innings. He gave up 6 hits, 3 runs and 4 walks. One of those hits was a 2-run dinger to Tigers OF Torii Hunter in the 4th inning. Hunter finished the day 1-4, and is batting .177.

CF Austin Jackson and 2B Ian Kinsler both collected 2 hits in the ballgame today. Jackson picked up another stolen base, his 7th so far this year.

A pleasant surprise for the Tigers offense was replacement 3B Alex Gonzalez. Gonzalez went 1-2 with a double, RBI and a run scored.

Even though Masterson was pulled after 4 innings, P Carlos Carrasco pitched 2.2 innings of relief and looked good....at first. Then the last time around the Tigers figured Carrasco out and were able to nab him for 2 runs in the 7th.

Tigers RP Bruce Rondon came in for the home squad and pitched a solid performance, going 1 2/3 allowing no runs and only 1 hit. His ERA now sits at 0.96. Rondon has pitched in 8 games so far this year and is proving to be a nasty force on the mound.

The Indians 3B Carlos Santana who was a literal Tiger killer this series was 2-3 with an RBI and a walk. His average is now a bold .440 on the year.

The Tigers are now back to .500 at 7-7 and are 2-7 at home and 5-0 on the road. Winning this game salvaged what could have been a horrific sweep to a division rival, especially after the Tigers brought a 5-game winning streak into the series.

The next series sees the Tigers welcome in the Los Angeles Angels (8-7) for a 3-game weekend set. Game 1 sees Rick Porcello (1-1 11.88) vs. Jered Weaver (1-1 1.88) due battle on the pitching rubber. First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m. EST.
