Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

This will be pretty straightfoward. For those of you that know me know that I love stats, and I love baseball. I have never done a full fledged baseball report but I will be here. I am not much of a graphics guy, more a writer.

This will be nothing short of that. I will be taking the Tigers from the beginning of the 2014 season and guiding them hopefully to many, many championships. There will be stats and articles and everything in between. This will be run day-to-day with updates taking place everyday of the season.

I am a realism nut and will be running the team as they do in real life. During Spring Training and beyond. It is the 2014 season and Rookie manager Brad Ausmus takes the helm with a team in need of a change, a faster, smarter approach.

I will be using MLB The Show 14 and TNK's sliders.

Here we go...

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

Detroit, MI. March 31, 2014 --- Opening Day 2014. When the hotdogs are freshest, the crowd is fired up and and baseball in Detroit, well it usually means there is snow on the ground.

Well if there was snow falling that was the only action Detroit fans received today as the Detroit Tigers were dominated by Royals Opening Day SP James Shields, shutout 2-0. Shields went 8 2/3 innings, giving up just 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1.

Opposing him was Justin Verlander who was good, but when your team doesn't put any runs on the board, it is hard to win. Verlander went 8 strong, giving up 5 hits, 2 earned runs and K'ing 5.

For the Royals, 3B Mike Moustakas went 1-3 with an RBI triple. Lorenzo Cain was 1-2 with a walk and a RBI in the Royals win.

For the Tigers, they accounted for 3 hits. CF Austin Jackson had every one of those, all singles. 2B Ian Kinsler had a frustrating afternoon going 0-3 with a strikeout and grounding into 2 double-plays.

This was not the way the Tigers wanted to start the 2014 season, but it is what it is. It is only one game....hopefully.

The Tigers are now off a day before getting back at it Wednesday, April 2 at Comerica Park against these Royals. The pitching matchup will be Max Scherzer (0-0 0.00) vs Jason Vargas (0-0 0.00).

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

Billy Butler hammers Tigers pitching while Jason Vargas throws an early season gem as the Royals win their second straight over the Tigers to open the 2014 season.

Game #2
Kansas_City_Royals123.JPG @ DetroitTigersLogo2WEWQE.jpg

Detroit, MI. April 2, 2014 --- When you get down by 7 runs it is never easy to win a ballgame. That is exactly what happened Wednesday as the Detroit Tigers were defeated for the second straight game by the Kansas City Royals 8-4 at Comerica Park.

Tiger's SP Max Scherzer was just ok, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 and walking 2. He received his first loss of the season. His counterpart, Apple Valley's own Jason Vargas shut the Tigers down for 7 strong innings, K'ing 5 and allowing 3 runs.

The Tigers bullpen was solid as Luke Putkonen, Ian Krol and Joba Chamberlain did their jobs. Veteran righty Joel Hanrahan gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 2/3 of an inning. He was already on the cusp on not making the team out of Spring Training and this performance doesn't help his manager's confidence in him.

As mentioned before, the Royals jumped out to a big lead after 7 scoring 8 runs. At the plate, the game ball must go to Tiger killer Billy Butler who was 4-5 with 4 RBI, a homer and a double. 3B Mike Moustakas also homered. Alex Gordon, playing left field today added to the mix with 2 RBI's.

The Tigers were held off guard all day by Vargas but managed some good at bats.

SS Joe Iglesias was 3-4 with a double, while Austin Jackson, Ian Kinsler and Miguel Cabrera all picked up RBI's in the loss.

Yes it is still early but starting the season at home 0-2 is never what any ballclub wants. The Tigers turn to Anibal Sanchez (0-0 0.00) tomorrow. His opponent on the mound is the ever durable Bruce Chen (0-0 0.00) for the Royals.

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

The Detroit Tigers get their first win of 2014 as Anibal Sanchez pitches a gem en route to a 7-1 win at Comerica.

Game #3
Kansas_City_Royals123.JPG @ DetroitTigersLogo2WEWQE.jpg

Detroit, MI. April 3, 2014 --- The Tigers needed to salvage something from its opening series with Royals and they did just that today as Anibal Sanchez threw a gem, notching his teams first win of 2014.

Sanchez was great, pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 5 while walking none.

This game was never in doubt with the way Sanchez was pitching. He did get some help offensively too early which was a nice sight to see. The Tigers still have not hit a homerun but that is not a huge concern as they still averaged well over 3 runs per game in the series.

2B Ian Kinsler went 3-4 with 3 RBI to lead the way for the Tigers. CF Austin Jackson was 2-4 from the leadoff spot with 2 runs.

The Tigers only struck out 3 times and walked just as many.

The Royals SP Bruce Chen was just ok, missing spots but making some decent pitches. He allowed 4 runs (only 2 earned) on 4 hits in 5 innings. It was reliever RP Louis Coleman who did not help his or his teams cause Thursday as he was shelled for 3 runs in just an inning.

The Royals were pretty quiet at the plate, CF Lorenzo Cain capped off a decent series going 2-3. 1B Eric Hosmer drove in the Royals only run in the 9th inning with a double, scoring SS Alcides Escobar.

With this victory, the Tigers are 1-2 and now welcome in the Baltimore Orioles for a 3-game weekend series. The Orioles are 0-3 after starting the season being swept by the BoSox.

The Tigers will give the ball to lefty Drew Smyly (0-0 0.00) while the Orioles will rely on youngin' Steve Johnson (0-0 0.00) to try and get the Orioles their first win of 2014.

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

Drew Smyly pitches a gem, but the Tigers fail offensively again, get beat by the O's 2-0. Nick Castellanos leaves game early, diagnosed with torn calf muscle.

Game #4
BO.jpg @ DetroitTigersLogo2WEWQE.jpg

Detroit, MI. April 4, 2014 --- The Tigers are branded an offensive team. With the power hitters they have, no one and I mean no one is showing up.

What hurts even more is besides losing 2-0 to the O's at home, 3B Nick Castellanos left the game in the early innings after diving for a ground ball. Upon further diagnosis it was determined Nick suffered a torn calf muscle and will be sidelined for 1-2 months. The Tigers have called up utility man Andrew Romine to help fill the gap until Castellanos is healthy again.

As pitching gem by Tigers SP Drew Smyly was for not Friday. Smyly went 6 2/3 IP, giving up 3 hits and striking out 6. His lone run allowed was a opposite field homerun to former Tiger OF Delmon Young in the 7th inning to break the deadlock. The Orioles would add another in the 8th to make it 2-0.

Baltimore SP Steve Johnson was just as good though, keeping the Tigers hitters off balance every pitch. Johnson went 6 1/3 IP, giving up 3 hits and striking out 5.

The Tigers 3 hits came from the same player, C Alex Avila. Avila went 3-4 with a 2B.

The O's offensively were led by CF Adam Jones who went 2-4 from the leadoff spot and Young catcher Matt Weiters also contributed with a double.

Orioles closer Tommy Hunter picked his first save of the season as well. The O's improve to 1-3 while the Tigers drop to 1-3.

Saturday's matchup pits the Tiger's Rick Porcello (0-0 0.00) against the Oriole's Wei-Yin Chen (0-0 0.00) in a primetime Saturday match-up.

Re: Detroit Tigers (2014 and beyond)

NICK CASTELLANOS DIAGNOSED WITH
TORN CALF MUSCLE

Saturday, April 5 --- The Tigers were dealt a huge blow Friday as IF Nick Castellanos left the game after attempting to make a diving play on a ground ball. He immediately got up and started wincing in immense pain. He was subsequently taken out of the game, replaced by Don Kelly.

After an MRI and consulting with team physicians, it has been determined that Castellanos has a torn right leg calf muscle and will be out at least 1-2 months.

The Tigers in the meantime have called up Andrew Romine from AA affiliate, the Erie Seawolves to provide utility relief. Expect to see more Alex Gonzalez, Don Kelly and even possibly Danny Worth or Hernan Perez.

Game #5

Detroit, MI. April 5, 2014 --- It was a bloodbath Saturday as the Baltimore Orioles blasted the Detroit Tigers 11-3.

Baltimore's first four hitters, 2B Jemile Weeks, RF Nick Markakis, 1B Chris Davis and LF Nelson Cruz went 10-20 with 7 RBI, 2 2B's and a 3B. Oh and 8 runs scored.

Tiger's SP Rick Porcello was rocked, no other way to put it. Porcello lasted on 3 1/3 innings while giving up 10 hits and 7 earned runs.

His counterpart, Wei-yen Chen was good, but not great. The Tigers hitters were able to get men on base, but never were able to get that big hit to score many runs. Chen went 8 innings, giving up 10 hits and 3 runs while striking out 6. Chen is now 1-0 on the young season.

The Orioles offense put the O's up early as they put up a 4 spot in the first inning, a 3 spot in the fourth and a 4 spot in the ninth. Big innings can crush teams and that is what happened to the Tigers today.

Chris Davis and 3B Nolan Reimold each collected triples Saturday. Davis had 4 RBI's as well.

The Tigers offense showed some life at points today as 1B Miguel Cabrera hammered his first homer, a towering shot to right. He ended up going 1-3 on the day with 2 RBI. RF Torii Hunter had a slump busting game going 3-4.

In 3B Nick Castellanos absence (torn calf muscle), veteran Alex Gonzalez got the start at 3B. Gonzalez went 1-4 and pooped on a ground ball leading to an error, his first of the year.

The Tigers and O's now face off Sunday in the rubber-match of the series. Baltimore send Miguel Gonzalez (0-0 2.45) to the mound while the Tigers send Justin Verlander (0-1 2.25) to the hill.
