Marlins on back of Stanton, Alvarez thrash Braves
Game Recap: That's more like it Miami! The Marlins took care of business and avoided a sweep at home vs Atlanta with a damn strong performance by all sides in the matchup. The game broke out in the 3rd inning for Miami when the bases eventually got loaded following a Marcell Ozuna walk to get Giancarlo Stanton to the plate... as you can imagine, he made the Braves and Mike Minor pay for that. A grand-slam was Stanton's first (and only thus far) hit of the 2015 MLB Season... but hey what a hit!
The Marlins offense also came a bit clutch later on as seen by Marcell Ozuna driving into 2 in the 7th inning. But the main catalyst for Miami being dominant was Henderson Alvarez who was dominant for basically the first full 8 innings. In the 9th, he allowed home-runs to AJ Pyerzynski and Andrelton Simmons which ruined his shutout, but he still got the complete game on the day.
Overall, a very strong performance by Miami and a great way to get win #1!
Minor Notes:
Giancarlo Stanton hit a grand-slam (4 RBI's)
Dee Gordon drove in the run before the GS in the 3rd inning
Martin Prado continues hit hot start to the season batting .454
Mike Minor now has an ERA of 11.25
The Marlins will play Atlanta again on April 13th, this time on the road
Marlins can't generate offense, Rays win 1-0
Game Recap: This is one of those games you look back on way down the line towards the end of the season and are really frustrated. Just 4 hits for Miami and 0 runs while Cosart for the most part held down the fort vs Tampa Bay allowing his 1 run in the 7th. Matt Moore was outstanding for Tampa Bay and he does deserve credit, but I don't think many people would question this is a game Miami should have won if they just had 1-2 lucky breaks go their way.
Minor Notes:
Cosart pitched 8 innings yet received the loss
Prado did fantastic going 3 for 4, only one who showed up (and is showing up)
Evan Longoria scored on a stolen base at home... yes that happened
Stanton's struggles returned today going 0-3
Dee Gordon!!!!!
Game Recap: What a walkoff! What a win! The Marlins come-back after falling behind 1-3 on a few blunders. On the back of Giancarlo Stanton, and then driven home by Jeff Baker and the walkoff by Dee!
Let me explain. In the 1st inning the Marlins got an early run off of a Michael Morse RBI. But, in the 4th inning due to a Christian Yelich error, Longoria scored for the Rays. Then Jaso hit a single to let Kiermaier score. The Marlins went down another run when Asdrubal Cabrera drove in DeJesus with a double. But in the 8th, despite his struggles early on this season, Stanton hit a bomb driving in both himself and Dee Gordon to tie up the game at 3-3!
To extras they went, and the 10th and 11th innings unveiled nothing. But in the 12th inning, after JT Realmuto grounded out... Jeff Baker came in as a pinch hitter for Aaron Crow and hit a double off the wall in left field. Next up was Dee Gordon who hit the ball straight to center field for, driving in Jeff Baker easily and the Marlins had won in walkoff fashion! A great way to pick up win #2 on the season, the Marlins needed this after yesterday's loss!
Minor Notes:
The Marlins used 3 pitchers, Haren (7 innings, 1 ER for 1.29 ERA)
Bryan Morris who went 3 innings allowing just 1 hit
Aaron Crow who got the win went 2 innings just 1 hit
The Rays used 4 pitchers, and Jepsen got the blown save for them
Fernandez blunder costs Miami rubber match
Game Recap: Jose Fernandez did miss the start he was projected to after getting hurt on Opening Day. But sadly, despite an incredibly strong performance for the most part Fernandez received his 2nd loss of the 2015 MLB Season. In the 2nd inning, Fernandez made an error (which would have ended the inning), and the following batter allowed Nick Franklin to hit a 2-run homer that gave the Rays a 2-0 lead. They tacked on another in the 7th inning, but the Marlins responded with 1 of their own. Sadly, despite having the bases loaded the Marlins were only able to muster up 1-run. Then in the 9th inning, Nick Masset came in for Fernandez and allowed a homer to David DeJesus which was the nail in the coffin for Miami.
Fernandez performance was very strong for the most part though. He went 8 innings and had 7 strikeouts, of course the 3 runs and allowing 7 hits speak for themselves but still impressive for a guy who's returning from an injury. The Rays on the other hand used 4 pitchers, the winning one being Cobb of course but Belisario and Frieri also got holds while Jake McGee got his second save of the season for Tampa Bay.
Minor Notes:
The Marlins didn't play all of their starting lineup today. Due to rest reasons, Dee Gordon and Christian Yelich came in mid-game where Dee went 2/2 while Yelich sadly didn't produce. The offense was decent with 7 hits but they just couldn't put the game away with those opportunities.
The Marlins now fall to 2-4 on the season, and now head on the road for a stretch of games.
