Series Preview April 27-29 vs Pirates

Chicago (AP)-

The Cubs and the Pirates have the same record coming into the series, both teams are in 2nd place behind the Cincinnati Reds. The Pirates and the Cubs split a four game series in the previous series against each other. The Cubs did well when they were able to get into the Pirates bullpen and the Pirates did well early on in games.

Game 1 April 27th
Vance Worley (2-0, 1.17) @ Kyle Hendricks (2-0, 3.93)

Worley was unhittable before the Cubs last time the Cubs saw him. The Cubs got to him early but were unable to force him to take the loss after some issues the Cubs had themselves.

Game 2 April 28th
Gerrit Cole (0-1, 4.30) @ Jon Lester (3-0, 1.84)

Lester was dominant the last time he faced the Pirates and the Cubs will need him to repeat that against a strong Pirates offense. Cole struggled early on but has not been dealing with too many issues though that era is a tad high.

Game 3 April 29th
Francisco Liriano (0-1, 2.31) @ Jake Arrieta (2-1, 3.65)

Liriano has thrown a no-hitter before so tune into @CubsNoHitStreak on twitter for some comical relief if for some reason Liriano starts looking like he is destined to do it again.

April 27th Pirates (11-8) @ Cubs (11-8)

The Cubs and Anthony Rizzo celebrate his walk off home run in extra innings.

Chicago (AP) -

Vance Worley (2-0, 1.17) @ Kyle Hendricks (2-0, 3.93)

Worley was unhittable before the Cubs last time the Cubs saw him. The Cubs got to him early but were unable to force him to take the loss after some issues the Cubs had themselves.

The Pirates would strike first after an RBI single by Neil Walker that drove in Josh Harrison to take the lead. But the Cubs would strike back and attack Vance Worley easy. Fowler led off with a hit, then Castro and then Rizzo would drive in Fowler with no one out. Kris Bryant would follow with a 3 run homer to left field. (Take that substitution recommendations) Worley would settle down after giving up one more hit to Chris Coghlan, and would sit down the next 3 in order.

Pedro Alvarez would tack on for the Pirates with a 1 out single that would score Andrew McCutchen in the 3rd inning.

Miguel Montero added to the Cubs lead in the 4th with a solo homer, which would be his 99th home run of his career.

Kyle Hendricks was pitching well but after a lead off single and a following walk in the 6th inning he was pulled for Phil Coke. Coke would get two outs and then give up a two run double to left field. Kang hit the double and Walker and Alvarez would score making it a 5-4 game. Following Kang's hit, Gregory Polanco followed with a double of his own making it 5-5 and Coke would be pulled.

Next in would be Gonzalez Germen to get the final out of the inning in the 6th.

Late in the bottom of the 9th, as both teams are deep into their bullpen, the Pirates lost pitcher Rob Scahill to some time of chest injury that forced him to leave the game. This is a development that could easily lead to a victory for the Cubs as the Pirates were now down to just two bullpen options.

The Cubs couldn't push any across in the 9th and the game would go to extra innings.

In the 10th inning, one night after the Cubs lost on a walk off home run, the Cubs claimed victory the same way. Anthony Rizzo lifted a long deep fly ball to right field to claim victory for the Cubs.

April 28th, Pirates (11-9) @ Cubs (12-8)

Jorge Soler crushes a go ahead Grand Slam in the bottom of the 8th

Chicago (AP) -

Gerrit Cole (0-1, 4.30) @ Jon Lester (3-0, 1.84)

Lester was dominant the last time he faced the Pirates and the Cubs will need him to repeat that against a strong Pirates offense. Cole struggled early on but has not been dealing with too many issues though that era is a tad high.

Both pitchers were dealing and Jon Lester did not allow a single hit until the 5th inning when he hung a change up to Neil Walker for a double to lead off the inning. Walker would get around to score after two sacrifice flies in the inning. So 1 hit and 1 run for the Pirates through 5. The problem for Lester and the Cubs is that through 5 innings, they also had only one hit off of Gerrit Cole.

The game remained the same though each team was able to add to the hits column by the 7th inning. The Cubs had 3 and the Pirates had 2. Gerritt Cole would walk Jorge Soler to start the inning and the Pirates would go to Brad Lincoln to relieve Cole. Lincoln was called up following the injury in the game last night.

Lincoln would get a double play ball immediately after I nice play by Mercer in the hole.

Lester would get knocked around for a couple of runs off of a triple by Starling Marte in the 8th inning for the Pirates.

The Cubs would get their first run off of a surprise suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded by.... Anthony Rizzo, which left some scratching their heads.

Jorge Soler would come up after a Chris Denorfia strike out with bases loaded and two outs. With a two strike count against the Pirates closer Mark Melancon, Soler hit a Cutter to right Field that just cleared the wall for a GRAND SLAM!!! The CUBS HAVE THE LEAD! 5-3.

Melancon would be pulled and the Cubs would continue to threaten the Pirates bullpen forcing the Pirates to use every one of their bullpen pitchers. EVERYONE of them was used by the end of the 8th inning.

Hector Rondon would come in and shut down the Pirates for yet another save for him on the year.

"This is why we have been preaching about getting into teams bullpens, it didn't make many problems in the 1st series but they still haven't recovered, to use all of your bullpen before the end of the 8th inning because guys are tired is going to cause problems. Melancon was called on to get a 5 out save because everyone else was exhausted, if Hector (Rondon) would have had problems they would have had to go to starters on their off days to pitch or a position player to try to beat half of our bullpen!"

"Don't worry about the young guys struggling right now, they are getting it together with good at bats, Bryant pinch hit and walked once and was hit in a second at bat. Addison got rung up not once but twice on pitches that weren't near the zone, we will reevaluate some things at the end of the month."

April 29th, 2015. Pirates (11-10) @ Cubs (13-8)

Arrieta dominates Pirates for Sweep
Chicago (AP) -
Francisco Liriano (0-1, 2.31) @ Jake Arrieta (2-1, 3.65)

Liriano has thrown a no-hitter before so tune into @CubsNoHitStreak on twitter for some comical relief if for some reason Liriano starts looking like he is destined to do it again.

It took until the 4th inning for the Cubs to register their first hit on Liriano, and Kris Bryant did just that, driving a single to left, followed by a walk by the hero from last night Jorge Soler. Chris Denorfia flared a ball into right field that would later score Bryant for a 1-0 lead. David Ross would follow with an RBI single to left that would score Soler. Jake Arrieta was then hit square in the back by Liriano.

"It looked intentional, didn't look like it was anywhere close to missing him. At that point we knew things would get a little testy."

The top of the next inning, Arrieta happened to hit Cervelli to lead off the inning square in the back. No warnings were issued by the home plate umpire.

An error by Jorge Soler allowed Corey Hart to reach third base in the top of the 7th inning with two outs which effectively ended Jake Arrieta's night and lead to Jason Motte being called on from the bullpen. Motte would strike out Starling Marte on 3 fastballs, 2 of which reached 100mph on the radar gun.

Starlin Castro would get an RBI single on a sacrifice bunt that no one would be able to make a play on. The bunt would score Addison Russell from 3rd base as the Cubs show that anyone in the lineup can be asked to bunt to get runs in. Anthony Rizzo would ground out following Castro stealing second base and this would score Dexter Fowler to make it 4-0 Cubs.

That would end the excitement in the game and the Cubs would hold on for a 4-0 win and the sweep over the NL Central rival Pirates.

End of April Report

The Cubs would finally get a much needed day off on the last day of April.

As the month finally came to an end, Jed Hoyer and Theo Epstien answered some questions about the month.

Q:We know this is a young team, and we know some more of the stars will be on the way soon enough, who were some of the top players in the minor leagues this month?

A: Our top AAA pitcher was Blake Parker, the closer in Iowa, who allowed 0 runs in his 7 innings of work while striking out 7.
Our top AA pitcher was Tyler Skulina who had a 1.57era while striking out 23 in 28.2 innings in Tennessee.
Our top AAA bat was Arismendy Alcantara and in AA it was Albert Almora.

Q:Addison Russell isn't hitting his body weight and has a high strike out number, any thoughts on sending him back down with Alcantara playing well?
A:We think Addison will benefit from this day off, he is playing great defensively and he is making solid contact, he is just getting in some bad counts and that will even out here soon.

Stats for the month of April for the players currently on the big league roster.

Series Preview May 1-3 vs Brewers

Chicago (AP)- Following a sweep of the Pirates in Chicago and an off day to bring a close to the month, the Cubs start a new 17 day stretch of games by welcoming the Milwaukee Brewers to town for a 3 game series.

Game 1
Mike Fiers (1-1, 2.63) @ Travis Wood (2-1, 2.88)

This will be the Cubs first look at the 11-11 Brew crew and their power packed lineup. Wood and Fiers have similar numbers and this game may be a slow paced game.

Game 2
Matt Garza (3-1, 2.67) @ Jason Hammel (0-1, 5.31)

Garza makes a return to Wrigley and appears to be pitching well on the season. Remember that Hammel has inflated numbers because he was pulled in the first inning of a start due to knee swelling and hasn't quite reached an innings total equal to that of other starters.

Game 3
Jimmy Nelson (1-2, 4.64) @ Kyle Hendricks (2-0, 4.24)

Both starters have high ERAs so that means that if the wind is blowing out it could turn into a blow out of a game. Let's home for Hendricks sake that it is not and that the Cubs can produce runs anyway.

Re: 2015 Chicago Cubs --- Road to a Dynasty

Chicago (AP)-

Mike Fiers (1-1, 2.63) @ Travis Wood (2-1, 2.88)

This will be the Cubs first look at the 11-11 Brew crew and their power packed lineup. Wood and Fiers have similar numbers and this game may be a slow paced game

After walking both Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo, Mike Fiers was in his 4th full count in 4 batters with Kris Bryant who drove a ball into the wall in Right Field for a 2 RBI double. Jorge Soler would follow with a two strike double to left field scoring Bryant but because of a slip and fall around the bases (he decided to steal 3rd without a user choice) he would get caught between 2nd and 3rd.

Travis Wood would run into his own problems when Khris Davis was able to drive a ball into the left field bleachers scoring himself and Aramis Ramirez the former Cub third baseman.

In the 4th inning, Khris Davis would come up again with a man on 2nd base, and again Khris Davis would send a ball into the basket in left field for another two run homer.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jorge Soler hit a double to right and while running the bases came up a bit lame and needed to be pulled from the game. Chris Denorfia would enter for Soler.

In the top of the 5th inning, following a hit to Mike Fiers, Jean Segura would drive a ball over the left field wall off of Travis Wood making it 6-3 Brewers.

A lead off triple by none other than Khris Davis would allow Scooter Gennet to hit a ball into the hole, that Addison Russel made an amazing play on to get the out, to drive in Davis. Following a throwing error by Miguel Montero, Ryan Braun would drive in 3 runs to make the score 10-3.

In the 7th inning, following a double by Denorfia and a walk by Chris Coghlan, Miguel Montero would double to Right center driving both in to make the score 10-5 and show some sign of life for the Cubs. Following a base running miscue, Montero would get tagged out on an Addison Russel ground out but Russell would score on a Dexter Fowler base hit to Center bringing the score to 10-6.

In the 8th inning the Cubs would load the bases, an amazing grab by Ryan Braun on a Miguel Montero line drive would save a bases clearing double. Junior Lake would pinch hit and drive in one run in the form Anthony Rizzo from third.

In the 9th inning, with two outs, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant would have back to back walks. Chris Denorfia would then hit a ball to right field for an RBI singles scoring Rizzo and making it a two run game with two men on for Chris Coghlan. Coghlan would hit a 2-1 fastball to the shortstop for the 3rd out of the game.

"Soler was diagnosed with a pulled muscle and will be out for a few games. Look for Chris Denorfia and Chris Coghlan to play the corner spots in the outfield for the rest of the series with the Brewers."
