Re: The Kids Are Coming: A Cubs Dynasty (The Show 15)

Cubs Lose 5th in a Row

Anthony Rizzo's 2 run homerun wasn't enough as the Cubs dropped their 5th in a row

CHICAGO – After being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs returned home, hoping the Friendly Confines would provide them with a much needed win. It also help that they were facing a pitcher that was winless on the season with an ERA over 6. Well…..

The Cubs jumped on the board first when Javier Baez doubled home Chris Denorfia, but from that point on Chicago struggled to find a big hit. They hit into 3 double plays, and just couldn’t come through in the clutch on the way to a 5-3 loss.

It’s a theme that has bitten the Cubs in the past; failing with runners in scoring position. The Cubs had 13 hits in the game and had multiple runners on the majority of the game, “we just couldn’t come up with the big hit when needed,” said Joe Maddon after the game.

The Cubs held their 1-0 lead into the 6th inning, and Jason Hammel looked to be cruising. But the Mets exploded for 4 runs and Hammel failed to finish the inning. New York took advantage of a Junior Lake error, and got a flurry of 2 out singles to score 3 of the 4 runs with 2 outs.. something the Cubs couldn’t accomplish.

Zack Wheeler managed to work around 11 hits through 7.2 innings for his first win of the year. Hammel fell to 2-3 (5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 ER). The series continues tomorrow with Travis Wood squaring off with Jacob DeGrom. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 pm CT.

Sim Games Recap:

Milwaukee Game 1 -
The Brewers put up a 3 spot in the first on an Adam Lind homerun, and survived a Kris Bryant (1-5 HR) homer in the 9th to win 4-3. The Cubs managed double digits hits again, but only 3 runs as hitting with RISP continues to haunt the offense.

Milwaukee Game 2 - The Cubs up and down bullpen is down as they can't hold a 4-3 lead late to give the Brewers a 6-4 win. Jean Segura (4-5) and Carlos Gomez (1-4 HR, 2 RBI) led the Brewers offensively. Starlin Castro hit his first homerun of the season. Jon Lester (5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 4 BB) was off but pitched well enough to keep the Cubs in the game. Cubs relievers allow 3 runs in the 7th and 8th.

Milwaukee Game 3 - Another 3 run homerun in the 1st propels the Brewers to the sweep. Khris Davis (1-4 HR, 3 RBI) gave the Brewers the early lead after the Cubs scored in the top of the 1st. Chicago scored single runs in the 3rd (Denorfia single) and 8th (Rizzo HR), but Neil Ramirez (1.2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 BB) walked two batters with 2 outs and Pedro Strop (0.2 IP 2 H) couldn't strand them as the Brewers won 5-3.

Re: The Kids Are Coming: A Cubs Dynasty (The Show 15)

Cubs Win Wild One

Bryant watches his game winning HR leave the park

CHICAGO – Kris Bryant has been everything he was expected to be at this point in his young career. Bryant was the savior today as he lifted the Cubs to a 6-5 victory with a walkoff homerun after yet another blown lead by the bullpen.

Bryant connected on a 1-1 fastball and nearly put it on to Waveland Avenue to give the Cubs their third win in the last 4 games. This came after Yoervis Medina gave up a 3 run homerun to Neil Walker that blew a 4-2 lead in the 9th. Jason Motte was unavailable, so Maddon went to Medina to close the door. “We knew going in that Jason [Motte] wasn’t available today. We used Strop to get out of a jam in the 8th and we were confident that Medina could get the job done. It didn’t work that way, but Kris came through and picked his teammate up. That was huge to see,” said Maddon after the game.

It looked early on that it would be a Cubs rout, but for the 3rd consecutive game, the Cubs struggled mightily hitting with runners on base.

Chicago got out to an early lead in the 1st as Starlin Castro (2-5, run) led off with a triple off the left-center field wall that was just out of the reach of a leaping Andrew McCutchen. Anthony Rizzo (3-4 RBI, run) followed immediately with a double into the right-center field gap to score Castro. Rizzo would come around to score on an infield hit from Chris Denorfia (3-4 RBI, run). Javier Baez (2-3 RBI) followed with a single through the left side to score Denorfia, then came around to score himself on a Jorge Soler (2-4 RBI)double off of the steel doors in left field to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead.

Chicago would continuously threaten the rest of the game, but they hit into 3 more double plays, and had some unfortunate luck hitting balls hard but right at the defense.

On the mound, Jake Arrieta looked like the Arrieta that broke out last year. Going into the 8th inning, Arrieta had allowed two hits and one walk. He ran into some trouble in the 8th as Francisco Cervelli (1-4, run) and Jose Tabata (1-1, run) both reached on singles, and Josh Harrison (1-3 2 RBI) followed that with a 2 run double. Arrieta (7.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 Ks) exited and Pedro Strop stranded Harrison at second as he got Starling Marte to fly out weakly to right field.

The Cubs went down quietly in the 8th to set up the epic finish. Medina came in and promptly walked Andrew McCutchen, then gave up a double (should’ve been a HR) to Pedro Alvarez to set up runners on 2nd and 3rd with 0 outs. Neil Walker came to the dish and jumped on the first pitch, a fastball, and deposited it into the shrubbery over the centerfield wall to give the Pirates a 5-4 lead. Medina got the next 3 batters out in order, 2 by strikeout.

Anthony Rizzo led off the ninth with a line drive single to right field and brought Bryant to the plate. “I was just looking for something to drive. I recognized his fastball out of hand and tried to square it up. I guess I got a lot of it,” said Bryant in the locker room. ‘I guess I got a lot of it’… understatement of the year. Bryant’s monstrous homerun was his 9th of the season and tied him for the NL lead in RBIs (29).

The series continues tomorrow as Jason Hammel (2-3 4.26 ERA) looks to bounce back and pick up his 3rd win of the season. He’ll square off against Francisco Liriano (2-0 5.25 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm CT.

MLB Notes:
Clayton Kershaw earned his 100th career victory with a complete game shutout of the Colorado Rockies. At 27 years, 57 days old, Kershaw is the 2nd youngest active pitcher to reach 100 wins. Felix Hernandez (27 years, 14 days) was younger when he reached 100 wins on April 22, 2013.

Re: The Kids Are Coming: A Cubs Dynasty (The Show 15)

Medina Crumbles, Padres Victorious

SAN DIEGO – The Cubs up and down month continued with a 5-1 loss to the Padres tonight. Jon Lester (6 IP, 6 H, 2 R) pitched well in the losing effort, but the Padres were able to blow the game open in the 7th against Yoervis Medina (.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R).

Javier Baez put the Cubs up early with a solo home run to dead center field in the 2nd inning. It was Baez’s 9th home run of the season, but his first in 16 games. The lead would hold into the 6th inning as Lester was able to cruise through the lineup twice, but the third time through proved to be a bit more difficult.

Yonder Alonso reached with a sharp single through the right side of the infield, and Matt Kemp followed with his NL leading 11th home run (tied with Anthony Rizzo and Adam Lind) to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.

After pinch hitting for Lester in the 7th, Yoervis Medina entered the game to try to keep the Cubs in striking distance. Medina had not thrown since getting roughed up against the Pirates last Friday. His rough patch continued tonight as he was knocked all around the field on the way to giving up 3 runs while only recording 2 outs.

“Medina is obviously struggling a little bit,” said Maddon after the game. “I don’t think it’s his stuff, I think he’s just over-pitching a bit and leaving balls over the plate. We’ll get it worked out though, I’ve still got a lot of confidence in him.”

The Cubs and Padres will play the rubber game of this 3 game series tomorrow afternoon. Jake Arrieta (1-1 5.27 ERA) will face the Major League ERA leader in Andrew Cashner (5-1 0.88 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 pm CT.

Sim Games Recap:

Pirates Game 2 – A late Cubs rally falls short as the Cubs lost 3-2. Jason Hammel (5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R) pitched well, but didn’t get much support as the Cubs runs came from solo shots by Anthony Rizzo (3-5 HR, RBI) and Miguel Montero (1-1 HR) who pinch hit in the 9th. Neil Walker homered for the 2nd consecutive game for Pittsburgh.

Pirates Game 3 – Miguel Montero (1-4 HR, RBI) homered for the 2nd game in a row, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs fell 3-2 for the 2nd consecutive day. Neil Ramirez (0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R) was credited with the loss as he gave up the winning run in the 8th inning. Neither starter factored into the decision. Anthony Rizzo went 1-1 with 3 walks.

Padres Game 1 – Chicago got back in the W column with a 6-5 victory over San Diego. Starlin Castro (2-5, HR, 4 RBI) provided the majority of the offense for the Cubbies as he hit a grand slam in the 2nd inning and scored the game winning run in the 9th on Anthony Rizzo's (2-4 RBI) RBI single. Jorge Soler (1-4 RBI) drove in the other run for Chicago. James Russell (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R) got the win as Kyle Hendricks (5 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 BBs) was uncharacteristically wild and got knocked around a bit.

Re: The Kids Are Coming: A Cubs Dynasty (The Show 15)

Hendricks Leads Cubs to Win

Kyle Hendricks was spectacular in leading the Cubs to a sweep of the Arizona Diamonbacks.

PHOENIX – Kyle Hendricks isn’t your typical pitcher in today’s baseball. He doesn’t throw 95. He doesn’t have a devastating breaking ball. But he pitches. And he was at his best on Sunday in Arizona. Hendricks baffled hitters with a combination of fastballs, changeups, and curveballs to the tune of 8 innings, 1 run ball to lead the Cubs to a 2-1 victory and series sweep of the lowly Diamondbacks.

While he only struck out 5 hitters, Hendricks didn’t walk a batter, which plagued him in his previous outing. “I felt great today. I had good control and was able to spot everything up really well,” Hendricks said post-game at his locker. The Cubs needed every bit of his outing as they struggled to handle Josh Collmenter and his cut-fastball.

The Cubs did a lot of nothing the first time through the order, but Anthony Rizzo (2-3, 2 runs) and Kris Bryant (2-4) got on base in the top of the 4th inning and Chris Denorfia (1-4, 2 RBI) drove Rizzo in with a sharp single to centerfield to get the Cubs on the board.

For the longest time, it looked as though that would be all the Cubs needed as Hendricks diced up the Diamondbacks lineup. The Cubs added another run when Denorfia grounded into a fielder’s choice while Rizzo scored from third in the 6th inning.

The Diamondbacks got their lone run in the 8th when AJ Pollack singled on a line drive that was nearly caught by a diving Jorge Soler. Pollack would steal 2nd base and score on David Peralta’s (2-4 RBI) double down the right field line. After the double, Paul Goldschmidt (1-4) came up, but Hendricks got him to ground out to second, and Mark Trumbo followed with a weak grounder to Hendricks, who completed the out at 1st base.

Jason Motte came on to close the game out in the 9th, but he made it interesting. Aaron Hill led off with a single and got all the way to third base, but pinch hitter Yasmani Tomas grounded out to Bryant at third to end the game.

The Cubs return home from their west coast trip to face the NL East leading Washington Nationals (27-17) on Monday. First pitch between Jon Lester (4-4 3.58 ERA) and Doug Fister (3-1 2.45 ERA) is scheduled for 1:20 pm CT.

Game Notes: The sweep was the 2nd series sweep of the season for Chicago. Their other sweep came against the Cincinnati Reds from April 13-15. In some minor league news, Chicago sent SP Drake Britton to Class-A Myrtle Beach from Triple-A Iowa and promoted SP Felipe Paulina from Myrtle Beach to Iowa.

MLB Notes: The Chicago White Sox have purchased the contract of top prospect SP Carlos Rodon to join the rotation. The team optioned RP Dan Jennings to Triple-A Charlotte and will move John Danks to the bullpen. The Atlanta Braves have optioned SP Mike Foltynewicz to Triple-A Gwinett and have recalled SP Trevor Cahill to replace him in the rotation.

Sim Games Recap:

Padres Game 3 – The Cubs lost an early 3-0 lead and eventually fell 4-3 in San Diego. Chicago jumped out with 2 runs in the 2nd and a third run in the 4th off of Andrew Cashner, but the Padres answered with a 3 spot in the bottom of the 4th off of Jake Arrieta (6 IP, 5 H, 3 R). San Diego then scored the go-ahead run off of a single from Justin Upton (2-4 RBI, run) in the 7th inning. The loss went to Hector Rondon (0.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R). The Cubs’ runs were driven in by Starlin Castro (1-4 RBI), Javier Baez (0-2, run, RBI, BB) and Jorge Soler (1-3 RBI).

Diamondbacks Game 1 Kris Bryant (2-4 HR, 2 RBI) and Jorge Soler (1-3 HR, 3 RBI) homered and Jason Hammel (6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER) threw 6 strong innings as the Cubs won 6-3. AJ Pollack (2-5 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) played a role in all 3 D’Backs runs. Starlin Castro and Javier Baez also contribute 2 hits and 2 runs each.

Diamondbacks Game 2 – The Cubs won a back-and-forth, extra innings game 7-6 as Junior Lake (3-6, 2 RBI) hit an RBI double in the 11th and Pedro Strop closed the door for his 1st save of the season. Jason Motte was credited with the win after allowing a game-tying HR to Jarrod Saltalamacchia (2-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI) who had a huge game at the plate. The Cubs led 5-2 in the 5th, but Arizona tied it with 2 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th. The game stayed tied into the 10th inning when the Cubs took a 6-5 lead on a Miguel Montero RBI single. Motte then gave up the tying blast to Salty, but Lake came through in the clutch with his 3rd hit of the game

Re: The Kids Are Coming: A Cubs Dynasty (The Show 15)

Cubs Fall Despite 6 Run First

Javier Baez strikes out to end a wild affair in the Windy City

CHICAGO – The Cubs continue to ride the roller coaster this season. After winning 4 in a row, the Cubs lost their 3rd consecutive game as they fell to the Kansas City Royals this afternoon, 8-7. The wind was blowing out at Wrigley, and that usually makes for a high-scoring game and today was no exception. The first inning saw 11 runs total and there were 15 runs combined in the game. Strangely, there were only 5 extra base hits, including 2 home runs, as the teams singled each other to death for the most part.

Travis Wood (4 IP, 11 H, 8 R) got the nod for the Cubs, and it was a rough one from the start. Wood allowed 5 runs before recording his 2nd out as Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon drove in runs with a pair of singles in front of a 3 run home run from Alex Rios. However, the Cubs answered right back with a 6 spot thanks to an RBI single from Kris Bryant, a 3 run home run from Miguel Montero, an RBI single from Travis Wood, and a sacrifice fly from Starlin Castro on his 2nd AB of the 1st inning. In total, the teams combined to send 21 batters to the plate in a 1st inning that took nearly an hour to play.

Kris Medlen settled in after the crazy 1st inning, but Wood gave up 3 more runs and was done after 4 innings. Edwin Jackson, James Russell, Neil Ramirez, and Pedro Strop combined to shut down the Royals offense, but the damage was done as the Cubs could only manage a single run the rest of the game, on a groundout by Matt Szczur.

The series continues tomorrow night as Kyle Hendricks (3-2 4.64 ERA) looks to even it up against Edinson Volquez (3-4 5.64 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 pm CT.

Sim Games Recap:

Nationals Game 1 – Mike Olt’s 1st HR of the season is a walk-off to lead the Cubs to a 3-2 victory. Jon Lester only struck out 1, but pitched 6 solid innings. Neil Ramirez got his first victory of the season with 2 perfect innings in relief.

Nationals Game 2 – Max Scherzer continued his dominance of the NL with 6 innings of 1 run ball to lower his ERA to 1.67 in a 6-3 victory. Jake Arrieta (7 IP, 3 H, 2 R) pitched well, but not quite good enough to take down the former Cy Young winner as he gave up a 2 run HR to Jason Werth. Denard Span scored 3 runs for the Nationals as well. Yoervis Medina gave up 3 runs in his 3rd straight appearance to raise his ERA to 5.40.

Nationals Game 3 – The Nationals gained another series victory with a 6-2 win in the rubber match. A 3 run home run capped off a 4 run 3rd inning for the Nats that erased a 2-1 deficit. Starling Castro and Jorge Soler scored the two Chicago runs with a pair of solo HRs. Jason Hammel was knocked around for 5 runs in 4 innings as the Cubs starting pitchers continue to struggle.

Royals Game 2 - The Cubs exploded for 13 runs in a lop-sided 13-5 victory. Jorge Soler (3-3 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R) and Starlin Castro (2-4 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) led the way as Anthony Rizzo (0-4, R) and Kris Bryant (0-5, 4 K) were silenced on the night. Kyle Hendricks (5 IP, 5 H, 3 R) was the beneficiary of the offense as he improved to 4-2 on the season.

Royals Game 3 - Chicago ends the month of May on a high note with a 3-2 victory to take the series from Kansas City. Anthony Rizzo (1-3 HR, RBI, 2 R) and Kris Bryant (2-4 HR, 2 RBI) joined the fun this game after combining to go hitless the night before and provided all of the offense for the Cubs. Jon Lester (6 IP 8 H 2 R) improves to 5-4 on the year with a solid outing.

Re: The Kids Are Coming: A Cubs Dynasty (The Show 15)

Chicago Cubs May Report Card

After a promising start to the 2015 campaign, the Chicago Cubs had a rollercoaster month of May. The team finished with a 14-15 record that included two separate 4 game win streaks (May 3-6 and 22-25) and a 5 game losing streak (May 7-11). In all, the Cubs had only 2 off days in the month as they started the month with 17 straight games.

Team Statistics (through May 31st)
Spoiler

The Cubs are currently in 2nd place in the NL-Central, 8 games back of the still-hot Milwaukee Brewers. The team ranks 11th in MLB in Batting Average (.264), tied for 7th in runs (221), 7th in homeruns (59), 12th in walks (157), and 8th in slugging (.424). On the pitching side, the Cubs are 19th in ERA (3.98), 22nd in hits allowed (477), tied for 16th in walks (149) and 18th in strikeouts (373).

OFFENSE: C+

The offense experienced a little bit of regression in the 2nd month, but still posted solid numbers. Anthony Rizzo had a spectacular month as he hit over .400 with 7 homeruns. While not at the same pace as his 1st month, Starlin Castro has remained hot, and found a bit of power in the month of May hitting 4 homeruns. He’s still leading the team in batting average, though it is down to .348 from the .389 he posted in April. Chris Denorfia has regressed quite a bit, but no one really expected him to carry a .381 average all season. He has recently been moved out of the cleanup spot and should see more hittable pitches down in the order. Expect his production to increase a bit moving forward.

Jorge Soler is starting to find his stroke as he finished the month on a tear and has raised his average up to .247. He will need to continue this upward trend if the Cubs expect to remain contenders in the Wild Card Race. Kris Bryant and Javier Baez continue to produce in their first full MLB seasons. Bryant is providing protection for Rizzo, batting in the 3rd spot all year. His strikeout numbers are a bit high, and you’d like to see more doubles, but the HR numbers are where you want them, and he’s 4th in the NL in RBIs. If he can start making more consistent contact and regain his grasp of the strike zone, it is safe to expect Bryant’s numbers to rise. Baez has maintained his contact rate that he showed in the first month, despite his power numbers dropping. Joe Maddon says he will be adjusting his lineup a little in the coming days, so can we expect to see Baez higher in the order? He’s only hitting .217 with runners in scoring position, but with more opportunities, those numbers could raise as well.

Filling in for the injured Dexter Fowler and Arismendy Alcantara, Junior Lake has regressed back to what everyone expected of him. He provided quite a bit of unexpected production in his first week, but his average is down in the low .200s as he has struggled to make consistent contact. He’s now splitting time with Matt Szczur, who has struggled himself but provides better defense and baserunning. One of these two is likely to be sent down with Alcantara returns, which is expected later this week as he starts a rehab stint in AAA today.

While some regression did occur, the offense has continued to produce at a level that is expected of a playoff-caliber team.

PITCHING: C

The pitching staff got off to a rough start this season, and while they’re still not to the level of expectations, there has been progress, though it seems to be of the “2 steps forward, 1 step back” variety. The bullpen has really turned it around since Jason Motte was inserted into the closer’s role. Hector Rondon, while still not striking guys out very much, has shown some progress and is looking more like his post-ASB-2014 self. Pedro Strop and the aforementioned Motte have remained fantastic so far. Justin Grimm and Neil Ramirez are looking to have regained their 2014 form, and even Edwin Jackson is providing some solid production in his role as a long reliever. The only real regression that was seen this month came from Yoervis Medina, who gave up 9 runs in a 3 outing span to push his ERA over 5.00. He did have a solid outing in the blowout victory over Kansas City on Saturday, but he’ll need a few more of those to regain the confidence of Maddon.

While the bullpen improved in May, the starters have remained a mystery. Jon Lester is still providing just above replacement level production, but the really bad part is he’s been by far the best of the starters. Jake Arrieta still hasn’t found consistency. He’ll back up a 7 IP 0 R start with a 4 IP 5 R one. He’s only got 1 win on the season and an ERA still north of 4.50. Jason Hammel is also sporting a 4.50+ ERA, but that might be inflated a bit by a disastrous outing he had in Pittsburgh where he gave up 10 ER in 4 innings. Travis Wood has regressed hard from his solid start to post a 4.98 ERA, highlighted by his last start against KC where he gave up 8 runs in 4 innings. Kyle Hendricks’ numbers are probably right in line with his talent level, but expectations for him are still based off of his small sample 2014 production. He’s got the best win percentage on the starting staff, but only a 4.55 ERA.

As the Cubs near the halfway mark of the season, expect Theo and company in the front-office to look for an upgrade in the starting rotation.

OVERALL: C+

Can a sub-.500 month be considered a success? For this team, I think yes. They managed to tread water with 2/3rds of their outfield missing the entire month, and little consistency out of the starting rotation. They’re half a game out of the Wild Card at this point and fully in playoff contention. While it might take a minor miracle to catch the Brewers in the division, let’s not forget that these same Brewers led the division for 150 days last year before falling apart in September and missing the playoffs. The Pirates and Cardinals are hot on the Cubs heels, but if Theo can swing a trade for a legit #2 starter, and Alcantara and Fowler can pick up where they left off when they were injured, this team can definitely find themselves in the post-season.
