New to the Blue: The Seattle Mariners 2016-???

2016 Seattle Mariners Season Preview

Mariners hit reset button in 2016

Peoria - 2015 was a season with expectations that the Mariners have not had on their shoulders in over a decade. Coming off a 87-75 campaign that had them finishing one game shy of a postseason birth, and adding the firepower of Nelson Cruz to the heart of their order, the Mariners looked primed to finally breakthrough. Instead it was another season of failure that folks up north in Seattle have come all to familiar with, and the front office had finally seen enough as the house cleaning commenced. Gone is the Jack Z era, and manager Lloyd McLendon as well. Jerry Dipoto is now here, a big name who got to play with a big budget in Los Angeles with moderate success. His man to lead the helm is Scott Servais, a front office executive with no managerial experience. He will be taking over a roster with a lot of new faces to Mariner fans, who we'll try to introduce you to here momentarily. the 3-4-5 of Cano, Cruz, and Seager is in tact. Felix is still anchoring the rotation, but beyond that there are a ton of new faces who will be wearing Mariner blue on opening day. Will this collection of new players gel together, and get the Mariners back to contention, or will the trend of mid level veterans flaming out in Seattle continue to rear it's ugly head? Join us for the ride to find out.

New Faces

Normally this is the part of the season preview where we show you some key additions and subtractions from last years squad. However there are so many folks no longer here from the team that ended 2015 that it will be best to just introduce you to all of the new faces that will be wearing a Mariner uniform this year.

Nori Aoki - OF

Aoki has been on some big time ball clubs in the past few years in Kansas City, and San Francisco. The Mariners hope his big game experience and ability to get on base will help the club at the top of the order.

Adam Lind - 1B/OF

Adam Lind will try to solidify the 1B position that was a revolving door under the Jack Z era. He is a consistent bat that has played in the American League before with the Toronto Blue Jays, his most recent stint however was with the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL.

Chris Iannetta - C

Iannetta will be familiar to Mariner fans as he spent the last four seasons as the catcher for the rival Angels. Dipoto has brought him over to man the dish for the Mariners after the well documented flame out of prospect Mike Zunino.

Steve Clevenger - C

Backing up Iannetta behind the plate will be Steve Clevenger. A left handed catcher coming to the M's in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles this offseason.

Leonys Martin - CF

Another familiar AL West foe. Martin comes to the Mariners after roaming the outfield for the Texas Rangers the last few years.

Wade Miley - P

Wade Miley spent last year in the Red Sox rotation posting a respectable 11-11 campaign.

Nate Karns - P

Karns was the main acquisition in the off season deal that sent Brad Miller to the Tampa Bay Rays. He's a young pitcher who showed the ability to locate in the strike zone last year, and will be bringing up the rear in the Mariners rotation this year.

Steve Cishek - P

Many people point to the downfall of the Mariners last season being the Fernando Rodney disaster, and the collapse of the bullpen in general compared to the 2014 squad. Cishek is the main piece of an attempt to rectify that problem as he will man the closer's role for Seattle.

Outlook

The Mariners should go as far as their bullpen can take them this year. The lineup finally looks major league caliber, and Felix, and Hisashi Iwakuma, can most likely be counted upon to do their thing in the rotation. Too many games were blown by the bullpen last season. If that problem can be fixed it could be a much improved year for the Mariners. If not, a lot of frustrating late inning losses will leave fans in Seattle disgusted for another summer until Seahawks training camp starts.

Prediction

88-74, 2nd in AL West, Host Wild Card Game

Mariners survive pitchers duel in extras to kick off 2016

 photo Game 1_zpsu9ko4gyx.jpg
Leonys Martin scores go ahead run in the top of the 13th

Arlington - The Seattle Mariners were locked into a classic pitchers duel to start the 2016 campaign. Scoreless going into the eighth inning when they finally broke thru on a Sacrifice fly to give them a 1-0 lead that held up until the ninth, but in his first appearance as the Mariners closer, Steve Cishek blew the save giving up the game tying home run to Mitch Moreland. Cishek was able to buckle down though and get the game into extras where it took a lead off triple in the 13th to put the Mariners in a position to push across the eventual game winner. Joel Peralta pitched three innings of relief to get the win while Nick Vincent ended up getting the save in this one.

Iwakuma shuts out Rangers for 3-0 win

 photo Game 2_zpsdp5lwwnr.jpg
Hisashi Iwakuma delivers the final pitch of his shutout performance

Arlington - The Mariners again won a close game on the strength of their pitching. Thanks to Hisashi Iwakuma's second career complete game shutout they were able to ride three runs to the victory in Texas. The runs came via the longball as Kyle Seager and Adam Lind hit their first homers of the season. That was all that was required for Hisashi Iwakuma, who was effective, only striking out five, but getting plenty of ground ball outs and keeping it out of the air in the traditionally hitter friendly confines in Arlington. The Mariners will look to get the sweep tomorrow afternoon.

Rangers down M's in extras 5-4

 photo Game 3_zpsv7vjgkn8.jpg
Shin-Shoo Choo delivers the game winning RBI in the 10th.

Arlington - The Mariners played another extra inning game in this series, but this time were unable to secure the victory, and the sweep, as it was the Rangers coming through in the 10th inning to win it. The Mariners looked to be in control after Steve Clevenger hit a two run home run in the seventh inning to push it to 4-2, but Delino DeShields Jr. countered that in the bottom half with a two run shot of his own to tie the game back up and send it into extras. There it only took a sacrifice fly from pinch hitting Shin-Shoo Choo to seal the Mariners fate. Wade Miley pitched well in his Mariner debut going seven innings, but unfortunately could not escape before blowing the lead late. Rookie Tony Zych suffered the loss in relief. The Mariners boarded a plane shortly after the game to head home to open Safeco Field up for 2016 Friday night, against the Oakland A's.

Guti's bat, Walker's arm carry Mariners to victory in home opener

 photo Game 4_zpsdgkgreab.jpg
Taijuan Walker delivers the opening pitch of the 2016 home season

Seattle - The Seattle Mariners opened Safeco Field with a bang on Friday night. Taijuan Walker went the distance, firing ten strikeouts in a four hit performance, and Franklin Gutierrez clubbed two home runs as the Mariners blanked the Athletics 8-0. Of the four hits off of Walker, A's designated hitter Mark Canha had three as the rest of the club had all sorts of problems figuring the young pitcher out. If Walker can pitch like this for the season, and finally live up to all the hype he had coming up in the Mariners system. It could go a long way in finally breaking the playoff slump the Mariners have been in for fifteen years. On the offensive side, Robinson Cano looks to be heating up after clubbing two more doubles to follow up his one in Texas on Wednesday, Kyle Seager, and Chris Iannetta are also continuing their torrid starts. The Mariners and A's will play game two of their series tomorrow night.

Mariners survive home run barrage to win another in extras

 photo Game 5_zpsqhnan9a1.jpg
Nelson Cruz hits a long home run into the upper deck in the 6th

Seattle - The First pitch thrown in the ball game got clubbed out for a solo home run, and it would set the tone for the rest of the night. As the Athletics clubbed four solo shots off of starter Nate Karns to jump out to a 5-1 lead in this one. Starter Sonny Gray was in command through the first five innings, but the Mariners were able to get to him in the sixth. The big blow a mammoth two run homer by Nelson Cruz that traveled 448 feet, and landed way up in the left field bleachers under the Safeco Field sign. The Mariners tied the game up in that inning, but were quiet afterwards eventually pushing it into extras for the third time in five games to start this season. It took until the eleventh but Chris Iannetta was able to line a single down the left field line that plated pinch runner Luis Sardiñas, and the Mariners were able to walk off as winners. The Mariners will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon in the first King's Court of the season.

Re: New to the Blue: The Seattle Mariners 2016-???

Mariners can't complete sweep, lose to A's 7-5

 photo Game 6_zpsgfy06qba.jpg
Coco Crisp lines a double that scores the go ahead runs in the 8th.

Seattle - King Felix was shaky in the first appearance in front of his court, and the A's were able to tag the M's bullpen late to avoid the sweep, and win 7-5 Sunday afternoon. The day started out promising enough as the first two Mariner hitters reached base before Robinson Cano sent them all home with a three run homer that opened the proceedings, but Felix let the A's come back with two runs of their own in the second inning, and they eventually got to the Mariner ace again in the fifth to tie the game up. Coco Crisp broke the 5-5 tie in the eighth by ripping a double that plated two runs for the eventual 7-5 score. The Mariners come back tomorrow to welcome the Texas Rangers into town for a three game set.

Re: New to the Blue: The Seattle Mariners 2016-???

Around the Majors: Week 1

Astros call up McCullers

The Astros have called up top prospect Lance McCullers from AAA Fresno. The move came a little earlier than expected in the season with Houston Ace Dallas Keuchel hitting the DL with shoulder inflammation. The Astros aren't taking any chances with their ace, and we'll see if they let McCullers stay at the big league club upon the Cy Young winner's return.

Dodgers, Tigers swap pitchers

The Dodgers and Tigers swapped pitchers on Sunday as the Dodgers sent reliver Luis Avilan to Detroit for Spencer Turnbull The Dodgers sent Turnbull to AAA Oklahoma City after completion of the trade. Here's a recap of the deal.

Dodgers get: RHP Spencer Turnbull

Tigers get: LHP Luis Avilan
