June 1878 Recap

News / Trades
- Ross Barnes had a great night on June 4, going 5-for-5 with a triple in a 9-6 loss against the Princes. Barnes, 28, is hitting .368 this season with 20 RBIs and 33 runs.

- Harry Hawkins found himself the subject of trade rumors early in the month after word got out that the 34 year old right fielder was not happy playing in Boston. On June 7 he got his wish, as Boston traded Hawkins to Cincinnati for RF Jay Pike and RF Oscar Walker. Hawkins is hitting .253 this season with 4 doubles and 21 RBI. Pike was named the #48 prospect in the league this year, and Walker was named the #11 prospect. Walker is rejoining the Beans after they traded him to the Redbirds in January of 1877.

- Ross Barnes had another outstanding game on June 7. The Chicago shortstop went 5-for-5 again in a 14-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Barnes had two doubles and two triples.

- Mark Neyman was dealing against Cincinnati on June 10. The 37 year old lefty allowed 7 hits in a complete game shutout as the Athletes cruised to an 8-0 win. Neyman is in his eigth year with Chicago, and is 10-12 with a 2.51 ERA in 34 starts with 64 strikeouts and 9 walks.

- Boston put together another big deal on June 16, trading Nick 'Sky' Womack to Indianapolis for LF Bill Sullivan, 2B Bill Fouser and C Phil Powers. Womack, 35, led the league in saves last year. He's 8-5 in 21 games and 8 starts, with a 1.81 ERA and 21 strikeouts.

- Chicago got terrible news on June 19, as they found out Ross Barnes would miss the rest of the season with an intercostal strain.

- Hugh Campbell held the Redbirds at bay on June 19, throwing a complete game 5-hitter in a 1-0 win. The Milwaukee righty is 16-13 this season with a 2.60 ERA in 33 starts. He's struck out 57.

- Mike Coulson tore his flexor tendon on June 21 and will miss the rest of the season. The 35 year old is just 2 years removed from winning the Pitcher of the Year award, but had a rough season, throwing just 2.2 innings in 3 games with a 6.75 ERA.

- Rumors swirled around the league in late June that Todd Goger had demanded a trade from Chicago. The 39 year old right fielder reportedly got into a fight with manager Jimmy Wood recently and demanded out.

- Jim Britt suffered shoulder inflammation on June 28 and will miss the rest of the season. The 22 year old right hander was 17-13 with a 1.49 ERA for Cincinnati.

- Providence clinched a repeat trip back to the NL Championship on June 30.
