1873 Offseason Recap

Trades/Signings
- Brooklyn Robins traded CF Brian Marshall and $111 in cash to Washington Generals for P Dan Ditch and LF Johnny Ryan. Marshall has hit .332 with 3 HR and 123 RBI in his career, while Fitch has pitched in 61 games, pitching 152 innings with 17 K, a 2.84 ERA, 10 wins, 7 losses, and 1 save.

- Boston traded LF Nick Conner to New York for RF Jim A. Devlin, 2B Ben Laughlin, and $110 in cash

- Brooklyn Blue Stockings traded LF Doc Gregory and RF U Eland to Boston for SS George Wright. Wright has hit .284 with 13 doubles, 13 triples, and a home run. He's also driven in 45 RBI.

- Baltimore traded RF Chummy Fitzpatrick to New York for P Dick McBride, RF Herm Doscher, and $90 in cash. McBride has appeared in 49 games, going 9-4 with a save, 9 Ks, and a 3.86 ERA. Fitzpatrick hit .317 with 9 RBI in limited action for Baltimore last year.

- Boston traded 2B Pete Inzerillo, MVP of the 1871 NA Championship, to Philadelphia Quakers, with 3B Bill Boyd, C William Bestick, SS Frank Abercrombie, CF George Bird, and 2B Sam Jackson joining the Beans. Inzerillo is hitting .348 with 142 RBI for his career.

- Chicago won the sweepstakes for star 2B Highball Ellis. The 26 year old was a free agent after Brooklyn (B) folded. He hit .270 with 1 HR and 38 RBI last year before fracturing his finger in early June and going out for the season.

Firings/Hirings
- Boston fired GM Mike Ross after one year. Ross' tenure resulted in the Beans finishing in the 1873 cellar just one year removed from the second of back-to-back championship appearances. The Beans hired Mark Carson, who most recently was the GM for Troy. He led the Trojans to 2 NA Championship appearances in 2 years, winning in 1872.

- Henry Guthrie, RP, Troy / New York - 1-2, 2 SV, 2.41 ERA, 2 K, 1.34 WHIP, 1872 NA Champion

Injuries
- New York CF Steve Saladino fell off a horse in September and suffered an intercostal strain.

- Keystones P Bill Stearns tore a flexor tendon in his elbow during spring training and will miss the 1874 season.

April 1874 Recap

News / Trades
- LF Todd Goger of the Keystones strained a hamstring on April 8, and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks
- George Hall, Boston's centerfielder, strained a hip muscle on April 24 and will miss the rest of the 1874 season. He hit .229 with 13 RBIs.
- Jason Hersch threw a 2-hitter on April 24 against New York
- Washington traded LF Ned Cuthbert and C Bill J. Smith to Brooklyn for 1B Orin McGuire
- Baltimore traded P Tom Corbitt to New York for LF John Barrett and 2B U Wood

May 1874 Recap

News / Trades
- 1B John Roe of Baltimore suffered plantar fascitis on May 3 against New York and will miss the rest of the season

- Baltimore traded P Dallas Rubel to Brooklyn for C John Sheppard and SS Favel Wordsworth. Rubel had appeared 14 times for Baltimore, going 3-0 with 4 saves, 3 Ks, and a 2.70 ERA.

- The Keystones traded CF Candy Nelson to Baltimore for P Jack McCarthy and C Jake Knowdell. Nelson is batting .220 with 9 hits, 4 RBI and 9 R.

- Ed 'Candyman' Lester sprained his ankle on May 13 and will miss the rest of the season. he was hitting .308 with 31 RBI and 28 R. Lester has won both a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger.

- Chicago C Kevin Olp broke a bone in his elbow on May 14 and will miss the rest of the season. He was hitting .200 with 9 RBI and 17 R in 24 games.

- New York 1B Mike Robinson fractured his thumb against Washington on May 20 and will miss the rest of the season. He was hitting .242 with 1 HR, 16 RBI and 25 R.

- Mike Coulson suffered bone chips in his elbow on May 26, causing the Chicago P to miss the rest of the season. He went 5-1 in 30 appearances, with a save, 10 Ks, 3 BBs, and a 2.35 ERA

- Sam Beyers, Brooklyn's RF, strained a quad on May 30 and will miss the rest of the season. He was hitting .250 with 1 HR, and 28 RBI

- Baltimore traded P Frank Blackburn to New York for SS Billy Geer and RF Joe Battin

- Keystones traded CF Ed Rogers to Brooklyn for P Al 'Uncle Al' Pratt and LF Johnny Ryan

- Quakers went 22-7 in May to get within 1.5 games of the Keystones

- Philadelphia Quakers win 20 of their last 23 games to win the league by 1 game over the Keystones
- Quakers finished the 1871 season in the cellar and have improved their standing each year since then
