Pittsburgh, PA (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates remained red hot on Monday afternoon as they shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-0 on a special Memorial Day matinee at PNC Park in downtown Pittsburgh. Ivan Nova tossed a complete game, six hit shutout as he dominated the suddenly very average looking DBacks.
Andrew McCutchen had a big night, going 3 for 4 with a home run. The Pirates (27-25) jumped on starter Patrick Corbin, scoring three times in the first inning. Gregory Polanco opened the game with a ringing double. Two batters later, he would score on Starling Marte single through the left side. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Marte would score on a David Freese RBI single back up the middle. Freese then scored on an RBI double from Francisco Cervelli to make it 3-0.
The Prates would add to their lead in the second with a two-out rally. Gregory Polanco, Phil Gosselin, and Starling Marte each lined singles to score Polanco and stake the Bucs to a 4-0 lead after two innings.
Andrew McCutchen singled home pitcher Ivan Nova with the bases loaded in the fifth. Francisco Cervelli then looped a ball through the infield to score Phil Gosselin to make it 6-0.
Andrew McCutchen would put a cap on the scoring in the sixth, hitting a solo home run off of Archie Bradley. It was McCutchen's sixth on the year and it made the score 7-0.
Meanwhile Ivan Nova (6-2) was cruising for the Bucs on the mound. He scattered just six hits, all singles and got the DBacks to ground into three double plays. He struck out two and walked two.
Patrick Corbin (1-3) took the loss and was knocked around pretty good. He allowed six runs, all earned, on 12 hits over just 3 1/3 innings.
Offensively, the Pirates were led by Andrew McCutchen. He went 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs. Starling Marte also went 3 for 4 with two RBIs with Francisco Cervelli hitting a double and driving in two.
The same two teams will be back at it tomorrow evening with Tyler Glasnow (0-4, 5.75) facing Robbie Ray (2-3, 3.14).
