Game #1

SAN FRANCISCO 9, ARIZONA 4

Brandon Belt sealed this one with this eighth inning grand slam off of Randall Delgado.

4/2/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The San Francisco Giants put a damper on the Opening Day celebration at Chase Field on Sunday afternoon as they handed the Arizona Diamondbacks a 9-4 setback to open the 2017 season. Brandon Belt's eighth inning grand slam ended the DBacks comeback and sent to the Giants onto victory.

game1b_17Daniel Descalso was thrown out at the plate by Hunter Pence to end the seventh and keep the Giants in the lead.
A.J. Pollock got the DBacks season off to a quick start, hitting the first pitch from Madison Bumgarner into the DBacks bullpen to give Arizona a 1-0 lead. Madison Bumgarner would quickly settle down, setting down the next 11 batters.

Meanwhile, the Giants would touch up Zach Greinke. Brandon Crawford hit a two-run home run deep into the bleachers in right in the second inning to give the Giants a 2-1 lead. In the fifth, he walked Madison Bumgarner to open the inning then got the next two batters out. Brandon Belt then hit a rocket to Crris Owings at short that went between his legs and rolled all the way to the wall. Bumgarner scored to make it 3-1. Hunter Pence then lined a single to center, scoring Belt.

Archie Bradley come on in relief of Zach Greinke in the sixth and quickly recorded two outs. Eduardo Nunez laced a single to left, then stole second. He came around to score on a bloop single to right from Denard Span to make it 5-1.

The DBacks would finally get to Bumgarner in the seventh. Yasmany Tomas walked to open the inning and David Peralta blooped a single down the line in right. Brandon Drury then hammered a hanging slider off the wall in dead center, scoring both Tomas and Peralta to make it 5-3. Cory Gearrin came on in relief of Bumgarner and Daniel Descalso singled on the first pitch that he saw. Drury was held up at third with nobody out. Chris Hermann then pinch hit for Jeff Mathis and grounded out to Brandon Belt at first, but Drury scored on the play to make it 5-4. Daniel Descalso then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A.J. Pollock hit a fly ball to right that Hunter Pence caught and then he gunned down Descalso at the plate to end the inning.

Jorge De La Rosa came on to pitch in the eighth. He got Joe Panik to ground out and looked to have a second ground out, but Chris Owings booted a grounder from Jarrett Parker. Randall Delgado came on to face Nick Hundley and got him to fly out to left. Eduardo Nune and Denard Span then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Delgado worked the count to 3-2 on Brandon Belt before he unloaded on a slider for a grand slam into the right field seats to seal it for the Giants.

Derek Law and Matt Reynolds then locked down the DBacks to hold onto the opening day win for the Giants. The Giants pounded out 15 hits in the win. Brandon Belt went 2 for 5 with the grand slam. Brandon Crawford wnet 2 for 5 with the two run home run. Those two home runs were the only extra base hits for San Francisco.

A.J. Pollock, Brandon Drury and David Peralta each has two hits for Arizona in the loss.

The teams have Monday off before resuming the series on Tuesday with Taijuan Walker facing Johnny Cueto.

Thanks. That was a tough one. The Giants were knocking the ball around the yard. We were lucky to only give up nine runs, believe it or not.

Game #2

SAN FRANCISCO 7, ARIZONA 5

Brandon Belt hit the first pitch that he saw in the ninth into the seats to tie the game at 5-5.

4/4/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – Fernando Rodney, welcome to Arizona!

On Tuesday evening Fernando Rodney blew his first save opportunity as a DBack, giving up a solo home run to Brandon Belt and allowing the go ahead run to score as the DBacks blew a 5-4 ninth inning lead, losing 7-5 to the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field to fall to (0-2) on the season.

Chris Owings slides home safely to complete an inside the park home run in the sixth.
The Giants (2-0) would grab an early lead off of new Diamondback pitcher Taijuan Walker. Denard Span laced a one-out double down into the right field corner. Two batters later, Hunter Pence lined a single to right that David Peralta misplayed, allowing Span to score from second to put the Giants up 1-0.

The Giants would increase their lead to 4-0 in the fourth as Buster Posey hit a three-run home run to left with none out.

Arizona would finally respond in the bottom of the fourth off of Johnny Cueto. Paul Goldschmidt singled through the right side to open the inning. Jake Lamb then absolutely crushed a Cueto fastball, hitting it off of the scoreboard in dead center, estimated at 456' to cut the Giants lead in half at 4-2.

The DBacks would put together a two-out rally in the fifth off of Cueto. A.J. Pollock lined a doubled just over the bag at third. David Peralta then hit a missile to right for a single, but A.J. Pollock was held at third. Goldy followed that up with a line drive back up the middle to score Pollock and move Peralta to third. Jake Lamb would tie the game up with a single to right, driving in his third run of the game. Yasmany Tomas looked like he would put the DBacks in front as he lined one to right, but Hunter Pence made a diving catch to rob Arizona of at least two more runs and ended the inning.

The DBacks would take the lead in the sixth against reliever George Kontos. CHris Owings lined a ball to right with one-out. Hunter Pence tried to make another amazing diving catch, but this time he missed the ball and it rolled all the way to the wall. Chris Owings motored around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to put the DBacks up 5-4.

Jorge De La Rosa and Tom Wilhelmsen pitched scoreless innings of relief, making way for closer Fernando Rodney in the ninth. His first pitch to Brandon Belt was hit almost 460' into the second deck in right field to tie the game at 5-5. Hunter Pence then hit the first pitch that he saw for a single and reached second on a wild pitch. Buster Poset lined out to deep right, allowing Pence to move up to third. Andrew Chafin was called in to try and get the DBacks out of this mess. Brandon Crawford lined a double to left center to score Pence to put the Giants in front 6-5. Kelby Tomlinson then singled through the left side to score Crawford as the Giants padded their lead.

Mark Melancon came on in the bottom of the ninth to close the DBacks down and pick up his first save. He walked Chris Hermann to open the inning, but got Nick Ahmed to ground into a 4-6-3 double play and he got A.J. Pollock to fly out to the warning track in left to end it.

Cory Gearrin picked up the win in relief for the Giants. He worked a scoreless eighth.

A.J. Pollock, Jake Lamb and Paul Goldschmidt each had two hits in the losing effort.

The series resumes on Wednesday evening with Jeff Samardzija going for the Giants against Patrick Corbin of the DBacks.

Game #3

ARIZONA 6, SAN FRANCISCO 5

Daniel Descalso hit a two-run home run in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie.

4/5/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks finally got into the win column in 2017, but it wasn't easy as they rallied late, then held on for a 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field. Daniel Descalso hit a pinch hit two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and send Arizona on to their first victory of the season.

game3b_17Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run in the eighth, his first on the season.
Jake Lamb hit his second home run in as many days to open the second inning. The solo shot was his second on the year and gave Arizona a 1-0 lead.

That lead was short lived though as Patrick Corbin could not shut down the Giants. Joe Panik opened the third, doubling to right. Jarrett Parker then drew a walk after a 13 pitch at bat. Jeff Samardzija reached on a fielder's choice with Parker out at second. Eduardo Nunez hit a sacrifice fly to deep right to tie the game at 1-1. Hunter Pence then drew another walk. Brandon Belt lined a two-out, two-run double to center, scoring both Samardzija and Pence to make it 3-1.

Patrick Corbin would help his own cause opening the fifth with a leadoff double. He would score on an RBI single from A.J. Pollock to cut the Giants lead to 3-2.

It would remain 3-2 until the eighth. Zach Godley walked Eduardo Nunez to open the inning. Nunez then stole second. Hunter Pence grounded out to Jake Lamb. Jorge De La Rosa came on in relief and Brandon Belt lined an RBI single to left to stretch the Giants lead to 4-2. Buster Posey then singled to right, but De La Rosa worked out of the jam, not allowing any more runs.

Mark Melancon came on in the bottom of the eighth to pitch for the Giants. Paul Goldschmidt hit a hanging slider into the seats in left-center. His first dinger on the year to cut the Giants lead to 4-3. Hunter Strickland would come in and he got Jake Lamb to pop out. He walked Yasmany Tomas on nine pitches. Brandon Drury then lined a ball to the wall in right center for a double, scoring Tomas to tie the game. Daniel Descalso then homered, hitting a two-run shot into the pool to give Arizona a 6-4 lead.

Fernando Rodney was called upon to try and close this one out, and it was an adventure. Joe Panik singled back up the middle to open the inning. Jarrett Parker then walked on four pitches. Kelby Tomlinson hit a pinch hit RBI single to left to cut the lead to 6-5. Jarrett Parker stopped at second on the play. Eduardo Nunez then laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with just one out. Hunter Pence was intentionally walked so Rodney could face Brandon Belt with the bases loaded. Belt worked the count to 2-1, and hit a rocket to second, that Brandon Drury turned into a 4-6-3 game ending double play to preserve the victory.

Jorge De La Rosa (1-0) picked up the win for Arizona with Rodney recording his first save as a Diamondback. Hunter Strickland (0-1) took the loss for the Giants.

The series wraps on Thursday evening with Arizona wearing their throwback uniforms and sending Robbie Ray to the bump to face Matt Moore.

Game #4

ARIZONA 5, SAN FRANCISCO 4

Nick Ahmed won it with a walk-off bomb in the bottom of the ninth.

4/6/17
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks did it again. On Thursday evening the DBacks rallied from three down in the bottom of the ninth to win it in walk-off fashion on a Nick Ahmed solo home run to left as they defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-4 to earn a split of their season opening four game series. Moments earlier, David Peralta hit a pinch hit, three-run bomb to tie the game off of closer Mark Melancon.

Nick Hundley hit a two-run bomb in the top of the ninth to put the Giants up by three.....it wasn't enough.
The Giants (2-2) went in front in the third inning off of starter Shelby Miller. Eduardo Nunez hit a two-run bomb deep into the seats in left, his first on the season to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.

Arizona would finally get something going offensively in the seventh. Chris Owings lined out to second to open the inning. Paul Goldschmidt followed that with a single back up the middle, and Jake Lamb drew a walk. Yasmany Tomas singled to center to score Goldy, but Jake Lamb was thrown out at third on the play, (8-5). Nick Ahmed followed that with a two-out single, but Brandon Drury grounded out to second to end the threat.

In the ninth, Randall Delgado came out of the bullpen with Brandon Crawford on third and two outs. Tory Lovullo went with the righty-righty matchup against pinch hitter Nick Hundley. It did not work, as Hundley drilled a 2-1 fastball over the Diamondbacks bullpen for a two-run home run to pad the Giants lead to 4-1.

Mark Melancon came on to try and close out the series win for the Giants. He got Chris Owings to fly out to open the ninth. Paul Goldschmidt singled back up the middle, his fourth single on the night. Jake Lamb then hit a bullet down the left field line for a double. David Peralta was called upon to pinch hit for Yasmany Tomas. He did not disappoint. He hit a hanging slider way back into the bleachers in right-center for a game tying three-run home run. Not to be outdone, Nick Ahmed followed that on the very next pitch with a blast to left-center to win it in walk-off fashion.

Arizona pounded out 12 hits in the game, but none were bigger than the last two. Randall Delgado picked up the win despite giving up that insurance home run in the top of the ninth. Mark Melancon took the loss for the Giants.

Nick Ahmed went 3 for 4 with a single, double, home run and two RBIs.

The DBacks ended up splitting the series after two tough losses in the first two games. They will now host the defending American League Champions (Cleveland) this weekend for a three game series. The Tribe was just swept by the Texas Rangers to open the season (0-3).
