Game #10

SAN FRANCISCO 2, ARIZONA 0

Jarrett Parker launched one on Giants Landing in the fourth inning.

4/12/17
San Francisco, CA (AP) – The San Francisco Giants avoided a sweep on Wednesday evening as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0 on a cold night at AT&T Park. Matt Cain ran his scoreless streak to 14 innings to open the season as he picked up his first win.

Matt Cain worked 7 2/3 scoreless innings.
San Francisco (5-5) would grab the lead off of Shelby Miller in the bottom of the fourth as Jarrett Parker homered to right. That solo home run was his first on the year and would be all the offense that Matt Cain would need in this one.

The Giants would get an unearned run in the fifth. Mac Williamson singled to right with one out. Matt Cain then bunted to Paul Goldschmidt, who threw wildly to second and everyone was safe. Miller got Hunter Pence to bounce back to the mound for the second out. Kelby Tomlinson singled to center, scoring Williamson, but Pollock threw out Cain at the plate as the Giants went up 2-0.

Shelby Miller (1-1) worked seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out five and walking none.

Arizona was held to just six hits, all singles. The DBacks hit into double plays in the first three innings to foil early scoring opportunities.

The DBacks (6-4) will now have tomorrow off, then head down the coast for a four game weekend series with the last place Dodgers starting on Friday night.

Zach Greinke was solid in helping the DBacks to the series opening win.

4/14/17
Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks took the opener of a four game weekend series at Dodger Stadium on Friday night as they escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Zach Greinke outdueled Clayton Kershaw as the DBacks kept pace with the surprising Padres atop the National League West.

game11b_17Yasiel Puig has hit bat flip game on point.
Both Greinke and Kershaw sent down the first nine batters that they faced in this one as each pitcher was perfect through three innings.

Chris Owings walked to open the fourth and Goldy singled to right. Jake Lamb hit a line drive to right that Puig could not catch, but he was able to throw out Goldy at second. Yasmany Tomas would hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Owings to put Arizona up 1-0.

In the fifth, Chris Iannetta doubled to center with one out. Zach Greinke then followed that with a single back up the middle to advance Iannetta to third. A.J. Pollock would hit a ground rule double to score Iannetta and move Greinke to third to make it 2-0. Chris Owings then singled through the left side to score Greinke to make it 3-0. Kershaw was able to escape the big inning though as Goldy lined into an inning ending double play.

Yasmany Tomas would lead off the ninth with a triple to center off of Brandon McCarthy. David Peralta followed that up with a line drive single to center to score Tomas with a big insurance run to make it 4-0.

Zach Greinke came out in the bottom of the ninth to try and finish off the complete game shutout. Chase Utley greeted him with a ringing pinch hit double to left center. Yasiel Puig then hit a moon shot into the seats in left center, estimated at 454 feet. He also gave a huge bat flip which had more than a few DBacks up in arms.

Randall Delgado came on in relief and gave up a single to Joc Pederson to send the tying run to the plate. He got Corey Seager to line out to Pollock in center, but Pederson tagged and advanced on the play. Juston Turner popped out to Chris Iannetta, and Adrian Gonzalez hit a loud fly ball to center that A.J. Pollock ran down to end the game and preserve the victory.

Greinke (2-1) went 8+ innings, allowing the two runs on four hits. He struck out 10 and did not issue a walk on 103 pitches. Clayton Kershaw (1-1) took the loss for L.A., pitching just five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.

The series will resume on Saturday evening with Taijuan Walker (0-1, 6.55) going up against Rich Hill (0-1, 1.46).

Game #12

ARIZONA 9, LOS ANGELES 4

Rich Hill yelling at Chris Iannetta after his bat flip after his third inning home run.

4/15/17
Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks used a four run seventh inning to pull away from the Dodgers for a comfortable 9-4 victory at Dodger Stadium on Saturday evening. That setup some late inning fireworks as Tom Wilhelmsen beaned Yasiel Puig and the benches emptied.

game12b_17Tom Wilhelmsen hits Yasiel Puig in the back for his big bat flip in last night's game and things got heated.
Things started to heat up early on in this one after Chris Iannetta hit a two-run home run to left off of Rich Hill in the third inning. Iannetta flipped his bat, mocking Yasiel Puig for his huge bat flip last night. Rich Hill was talking to Iannetta as he slowly trotted around the bases.

The Dodgers (3-9) would get those two runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Yasiel Puig lined a one-out single to center and reached second on a Taijuan Walker wild pitch. He would score on a Corey Seager single. Justin Turner then lined a double down the right field line to score Seager to tie the ballgame at 2-2.

A Nick Ahmed sacrifice fly scored Paul Goldschmidt in the fourth as Arizona regained the lead. Goldy had singled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, and then stole second.

In the fifth, Chris Iannetta singled to open the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Taijuan Walker. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an A.J. Pollock ground out to make it 4-2.

An Andrew Toles pinch hit singled opened the bottom of the fifth for L.A. After a Yasiel Puig strikeout, Joc Pederson doubled into the right field corner to score Toles. One out later, Justin Turner doubled again, this time to left center, scoring Pederson to tie the game at 4-4.

The DBacks (8-4) would manufacture another run in the sixth, this time off of reliever Brandon McCarthy. Yasmany Tomas doubled to open the inning. He advanced to third on a David Peralta ground out and scored on a Nick Ahmed ground out as Arizona moved back in front, 5-4.

In the seventh, Jake Lamb hit a one-out pinch hit single off of McCarthy. A.J. Pollock then doubled to left. McCarthy intentionally walked Chris Owings to load the bases, and face Paul Goldschmidt. Goldy hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Lamb. Chris Owings stole second, and then he and A.J. Pollock scored on a two-run single from Yasmany Tomas. David Peralta singled to right and Puig misplayed the ball, allowing Tomas to score from first and Peralta to end up on third as the DBacks extended their lead to 9-4.

In the eighth, Tom Wilhemsen came on to pitch and beaned Puig in the shoulder blade. The Dodgers bench immediately went wild as Puig had to be held back by Iannetta. The benches both cleared but no punches were thrown and nobody was ejected.

The series resumes on Sunday afternoon with Patrick Corbin (0-0, 4.76) going up against Kenta Maeda (0-0, 1.59).

Jake Lamb went deep twice and is now tied for the MLB lead with five home runs.

4/15/17
Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks look like a team that may be ready to contend in 2017. On Sunday afternoon, they overcame two injuries to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 to win their third straight at Dodger Stadium.

game13b_17Zach Godley was called upon early due to injury, and picked up his first win on the season.
Arizona (9-4) got off to a quick start against Kenta Maeda as Jake Lamb hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the first inning to stake the DBacks to an early 2-0 lead.

There was trouble for the DBacks on the injury front in the second inning. Starting pitcher Patrick Corbin had to leave the game after just 1 2/3 innings with pain in his neck. Zach Godley was called in out of the bullpen to take his spot, and he performed admirably.

An A.J. Pollock solo home run to left in the third extended the Arizona lead to 3-0. Jake Lamb.s second home run of the game, and fifth on the year, in the fourth gave the DBacks a four run cushion to work with.

Godley would make that stand up. He worked 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just four hits and no runs. He struck out four and walked only one.

Arizona would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Yasmany Tomas singled off of the glove of Justin Turner at third. Chris Owings then followed that with an RBI triple of right center to make it 5-0.

J.J. Hoover came on to pitch in the bottom of the ninth and tried to make it interesting. Justin Turner led off with a single. He advanced to second on a ground out. Adrian Gonzalez singled to move Turner over to third. Yasmani Grandal grounded out to Daniel Descalso at first, allowing Turner to score the Dodgers first run. Kiki Hernandez singled back up the middle. Chase Utley pinch hit, but grounded out to Chris Owings to end the ball game.

Paul Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the sixth. He then injured his shin diving back to first on a pick off move and had to leave the ball game. The injury does not appear to be serious, but he may miss a few days. Patrick Corbin's injury also does not appear to be serious, but he may miss his next start.

The series wraps on Monday night with Robbie Ray (0-0, 3.00) facing Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-0, 1.42).

Archie Bradley replaced an injured Robbie Ray and did not allow a run.

4/17/17
Los Angeles, CA (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks completed a four game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Dodger Stadium on Monday night with a 3-0 victory. Archie Bradley worked 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win on the season.

game14b_17Justin Turner flashed some leather in the Dodgers loss.
For the second straight game, the Diamondbacks lost a starting pitcher due to injury. This time it was Robbie Ray, who left the game just one out into the first inning with leg pain. Archie Bradley came in and picked up his team, throwing 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. Tom Wilhelmsen worked the seventh and eighth innings, with Fernando Rodney working a perfect ninth to pick up his third save.

Offensively, Arizona would get all the offense that they would need in the top of the first inning as Chris Owings and Yasmany Tomas hit back-to-back doubles.

In the fifth, Archie Bradley would help his own cause. He doubled home Chris Iannetta for his first RBI of the season. Jake Lamb would hit a solo home run in the sixth off of Yimi Garcia. It was Lamb's Major League leading sixth home run on the year.

Los Angeles was held to just five hits as they dropped to (3-11) on the season, good for last place in the competitive National League West.

Arizona will continue their ten game road trip tomorrow evening as they head down the coast for a three game series with the surprising second place San Diego Padres (8-6). Shelby Miller (1-1, 2.08) will take the ball for Arizona against Jarred Cosart (1-0, 5.19).
