Game #28

WASHINGTON 4, ARIZONA 2

Trea Thomas slides home safely after a first inning triple and error by Yasmany Tomas.

5/2/17
Washington, DC (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks opened a six game road trip with a 4-2 loss to the Washington Nationals at National Park on Tuesday evening in our nation's capital. Max Scherzer scattered five hits and allowed two runs in eight strong innings of work for the Nationals.

Max Scherzer was dominant on Tuesday evening.
Scherzer did struggle out of the gate though. David Peralta singled to right with one out in the first. Paul Goldschmidt doubled to right to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. Jake Lamb then singled back up the middle, scoring both Peralta and Goldy to make it 2-0.

The Nats would get one back immediately as Trea Turner tripled to left on the first pitch from Patrick Corbin, and scored on a Yasmany Tomas error in the play. They would tie it up in the third on a Ryan Zimmerman RBI double. Corbin would work out of the inning, stranding runners on second and third.

In the fifth, Trea Turner led off with a single. He would advance to third on two wild pitches by Corbin. Adam Eaton singled him home to give the Nationals the lead. Singles from Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth chased Corbin from the game. Zack Godley inherited a bases loaded situation facing Matt Wieters. He uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Eaton to score and make it 4-2. He would walk Wieters, but got Drew to fly out to end the inning.

On the other side, the DBacks were punchless after getting three first inning hits and two runs. They managed just two hits over the final eight innings as they lost their fourth game in their last five outings. Max Scherzer improved to (5-1) and Shawn Kelley picked up his eighth save working a 1-2-3 ninth.

Washington (18-8) leads the majors in batting average and runs scored.

The series resumes on Wednesday evening with Robbie Ray (0-1, 2.91) going up against Stephen Strasburg (1-1, 5.70).

Game #29

WASHINGTON 6, ARIZONA 4

Shelby Miller was dealing on Friday night.

5/3/17
Washington, DC (AP) – The Arizona Diamondback's woes continued on Wednesday evening as they dropped their fourth straight game, falling 6-4 to the Washington Nationals at National's Park. Ryan Zimmerman hit two home runs and drove in three to lead the National League East leading Nats.

Goldy doubled to center in the fourth to extend his hitting streak.
Washington (19-8) got off to a quick start against Robbie Ray. Trea Turner singled on the first pitch that he saw. He would steal second and scored on an Adam Eaton double to left to put the Nats up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

In the third, Stephen Strasburg would help his own cause. He singled to left to open the inning and reached second on a Ray wild pitch. Adam Eaton would triple into the right field corner to score Strasburg. Bryce Harper followed that with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Eaton. Ryan Zimmerman then hammered a Ray fastball over the seats and onto the concourse in left field to make it 4-0.

Arizona (15-14) would finally come alive in the fifth. Jake Lamb reached on an infield single. Yasmany Tomas and Nick Ahmed would each single, with Lamb scoring on Ahmed's single to get Arizona on the scoreboard. Tomas and Ahmed woudl advance on a wild pitch, and Chris Owings walked to load the bases with none out. Chris Herrmann hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right, scoring Tomas. Owings then stole second and after Robbie Ray struck out, A.J. Pollock walked to load the bases. Strasburg would work out of the jam though, getting David Peralta to roll over a 2-1 change up to ground out and end the inning.

A two-out walk to Bryce Harper in the bottom of the fifth then setup Ryan Zimmerman to ice this one, as he tomahawked a Ray slider into the seats in left to make it 6-2.

The Nats went to the bullpen in the seventh, bringing in Sammy Solis after Strasburg gave up a leadoff single to Nick Ahmed and RBI double to Chris Owings. Owings would advance to third on a Chris Iannetta ground out and scored on a Jeremy Hazelbaker ground out to cut the Nats lead to 6-4.

In the eighth, Paul Goldschmidt lined a one out single back up the middle to extend his hitting streak to 25 games.

Shawn Kelley made things interesting in the ninth. He walked Nick Ahmed to open the ninth. He struck out Chris Owings looking. Chris Iannetta then hammered a hanging slider but Adam Eaton was able to run it down at the wall in left center. Jeremy Hazelbaker singled to keep the inning alive and bring the go ahead run to the plate, but A.J. Pollock grounded out to shirt to end the threat.

Robbie Ray (0-2) took the loss, going five innings and allowing six runs on eight hits. Stephen Strasburg (2-1) hung out to pick up the win. He went six plus innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked two. Shawn Kelley picked up his ninth save.

The series wraps on Thursday afternoon with Shelby Miller (2-2, 2.73) trying to end the losing streak. He will be opposed by Tanner Roark (2-0, 5.83).

Game #30

WASHINGTON 2, ARIZONA 1 (14)

Adam Eaton tied it with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

5/4/17
Washington, DC (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks were one pitch away from ending their four game losing streak, but Adam Eaton spoiled that with a two-out, two-strike solo home run off of Shelby Miller in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday afternoon as the Washington Nationals rallied for a 2-1 extra inning victory over the Diamondbacks. Adam Lind laid down a perfect suicide squeeze in the bottom of the 14th to allow Brian Goodwin to score the winning run.

Shelby Miller's gem was wasted on just one pitch.
Jake Lamb had given the Diamondbacks an early lead way back in the second inning, hitting a solo home run off of Tanner Roark. It was his 10th on the season and gave the DBacks a 1-0 lead.

Shelby Miller was almost unhittable. He entered the ninth inning allowing just two hits, while throwing 91 pitches. He got Brian Goodwin to strike out to open the ninth and got Trea Turner to bounce out to Paul Goldschmidt. He worked Adam Eaton to a 1-2 count, then hung a curveball that Eaton hammered into the seats in right to tie the game at 1-1. That one mistake undid 8 2/3 innings of excellent work.

Arizona (15-15) would have their chances to win it. They pounded out 14 hits, yet managed just one run. In the 11th, they loaded the bases with just one out. CHris Owings hit a fly ball to medium right and Bryce Harper gunned down Jake Lamb at the plate to end the inning and keep the game tied at 1-1.

In the 13th, Anthony Rendon doubled to open the inning. Trea Taylor tried to sacrifice Rendon to third, but Jake Lamb could not handle it and runners were at first and third with no one out. The Nats tried a suicide squeeze that failed and Rendon was out at home, while Taylor advanced to second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and he was hung out to dry on another failed suicide squeeze, getting tagged out to home to send us to the 14th.

Andrew Chafin came on to pitch and could not handle a comebacker, allowing Brian Goodwin to reach. Trea Turner sacrificed Goodwin to second. He then stole third as Adam Eaton walked. Corbin then intentionally walked Robinson to load the bases with one out. Adam Lind then laid down a perfect suicide squeeze that Corbin could not get to and Goodwin scored to walk it off.

The galling loss was Arizona's fifth straight and sixth in their last seven.

Paul Goldschmidt went 2 for 6 with two doubles to extend his hitting streak to 26 games.

Arizona will now head to Colorado for a three game weekend series before returning home.

Game #31

COLORADO 1, ARIZONA 0

Jorge De La Rosa walked in the game winning run in the eighth.

5/5/17
Denver, CO (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks woes continued on Friday night as they got a great pitching performance form Zack Greinke, yet lost 1-0 to the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. An eighth inning bases loaded walk by Charlie Blackmon forced in the only run of the game as the DBacks lost their sixth straight game.

game31b_17A.J. Pollock hit what looked like a three run blast in the eighth, only to have it die on the warning track
Another strong start by Zack Greinke was ruined by the DBacks lack of offense. Greinke pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits while striking out eight and walking none.

J.J. Hoover came on in the eighth and D.J. LeMahieu greeted him with a double off of the wall in left. He reached third on a wild pitch. He then hit Dustin Garneau and was lifted for Jorge De La Rosa. He came in and hit David Dahl to load the bases. Charlie Blackmon then worked a full count walk to force home LeMahieu to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. De La Rosa then struck out Ian Desmond and Nolan Arenado before getting Mark Reynolds to pop out to work out of the jam with minimal damage.

Greg Holland work a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his eighth save. He got out Peralta, Goldschmidt and Lamb, the heart of the DBacks order.

Jeff Hoffman got a no decision for the Rockies despite pitching 7 2/3 innings of shut out baseball, allowing just four hits. He pitched a five hit complete game shutout last Saturday at Chase Field in a 3-0 Rockies victory. Former DBack Chad Qualls picked up his first win of the season, working just 1/3 of an inning and getting A.J. Pollock to fly out to the warning track with two on in the top of the eighth.

Paul Goldschmidt extended his career high hitting streak to 27 games with a seventh inning single.

The DBacks have now been shutout in three straight games against the Rockies.

The series continues on Saturday evening as Taijuan Walker (3-2, 3.69) faces Jon Gray (3-1, 1.91).
