Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

Longball Comes Through Late For Blue Jays In Win

Darwin Barney celebrates his walk-off homer as he rounds third with coach Luis Rivera.

The Toronto Blue Jays finally got back to their own offensive style as they managed to salvage the last game of their four game series with the Baltimore Orioles, gladly settling for a split in what was a tightly contested series.

Both Aaron Sanchez and Kevin Gausman turned in spectacular outings for their respective teams, and it wasn’t until the two starters left the game that the runs began to mount. Manny Machado surprised the Blue Jays defense by dropping down a suicide squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth to give the Orioles the late lead, with many fans thinking that the game was in the books.

With the crowd beginning to file out of the Rogers Centre, Kendrys Morales connected on another ninth inning bomb, this time off Orioles closer Zach Britton, to tie the game at one run a piece in the bottom of the ninth. A quick 1-2-3 inning from Loup in the top half of the tenth inning would give the Blue Jays the chance that they needed.

With Britton still on the mound to start the tenth inning, Darwin Barney went hacking at the plate to lead off the inning. Not known for his power, Barney connected on his first home run of the season to give the Blue Jays the series split.

Barney was mobbed by his teammates as he crossed the plate.

Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis left the game in the seventh inning after diving for a ground ball up the middle that just eluded his glove. At the time, the Blue Jays announced that it was an undisclosed injury, but it has now been diagnosed as a strained bicep. The 26 year old Florida native has struggled to start the season, batting only .200 with 2 RBIs. Travis is expected to avoid a DL stint and is expected to be out for 1-6 days.

Britton blew his first save of the season after recording 7 straight converted opportunities. Three out of the four games of the weekend series between the two AL East clubs were determined by a 2-1 score, with only the first game being a 4-2 victory for the Orioles.

The Blue Jays will have Monday off before kicking off a three game series against the Boston Red Sox to wrap up their nine game homestand. Marcus Stroman (0-0, 0.60) is expected to get the start in the first game of the series. Boston is expected to send southpaw Drew Pomeranz (0-1, 7.00) to the mound in the series opener.

Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

Martin’s Costly Error Costs Jays In Loss To Red Sox
Martin's costly error in the ninth ultimately cost the Jays the ballgame.

Despite having the day off yesterday, the Toronto Blue Jays looked a little bit sluggish against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday evening. Drew Pomeranz managed to hold the Blue Jays to two runs over six and a third innings of work, but the Blue Jays were able to mount a temporary comeback against the Boston bullpen.

Down 1-0 early in the ball game thanks to a Jackie Bradley Jr. solo shot off of Marcus Stroman, the Blue Jays would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from Kevin Pillar and Josh Donaldson. The lead wouldn’t last long though, as the Red Sox snatched it right back in the next half inning, with Andrew Benintendi taking Stroman yard for two runs.

The Blue Jays battled back though, as they have done all season, pushing across the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning with Darwin Barney lined a two-out single to centre field to score pinch-runner Dalton Pompey from second.

With momentum on their side and emotions running at a high, a Russell Martin error in the top half of the ninth inning would give the Red Sox the opportunity that they needed. With second baseman Devon Travis being day-to-day with an injury, Martin moved over to second base following the pinch-running substitution of Troy Tulowitzki, allowing Darwin Barney to slide over to short. However, Jackie Bradley Jr. would hit a high pop-up drifting into shallow right field that would deflect off Martin’s glove allowing the go-ahead run to reach base. A single from Marco Hernandez following by a line drive to right by Brock Holt and all of a sudden, the Red Sox were up by two—the biggest lead for either team of the night.

Craig Kimbrel would come on for the ninth inning and shut the door for his fourth save of the season as the Red Sox improved to 6-8. The Blue Jays look to bounce back from the tough loss tomorrow evening as Joe Biagini (0-2, 4.15) takes on Eduardo Rodriguez (1-0, 3.50).

Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

Donaldson Carries Blue Jays To Extras Win Over Red Sox

Josh Donaldson celebrates his walk-off single in the 11th.

Entering Wednesday evening’s contest against the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson had yet to hit a home run through his team’s first thirteen games. That quickly changed in the bottom of the first, as he silenced reporters and critics with a solo shot to left field that StatCast measured to about 398 feet—also giving the Jays a 1-0 lead at the time.

The lead was short-lived however, an issue that the Jays have been struggling with this season, as Hanley Ramirez would answer in the next half inning with his first home run of the season as well, this one falling under the two-run variety to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.

Joe Biagini would settle in after that, and went on to toss 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts, making way for the Jays bullpen, who would allow just one hit the rest of the night.

Josh Donaldson continued to take care of things on the offensive side, tying the game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Devon Travis. Leave it to Donaldson to end the game in extras as well, as the star thirdbaseman roped a two-out single into center field to score Kevin Pillar from second as the Jays walked off victorious.

Donaldson got showered with gatorade by his teammates following his heroics.

Eduardo Rodriguez threw seven innings for the Red Sox, surrendering two runs on seven hits while striking out three. Rodriguez was able to induce weak contact all night.

The Blue Jays and Red Sox will battle it out tomorrow in the rubber match of the three game series. Two southpaws will go at it with one another, with J.A. Happ (1-0, 1.32) taking the mound for the Blue Jays and prized off-season acquisition Chris Sale (2-0, 2.53) taking the hill for the Red Sox.

Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

Jays Rough Up Sale, Take Series From Red Sox
Josh Donaldson's solo homer in the fifth capped off an uncharacteristic start from Chris Sale.

The Blue Jays may have finally put their hitting woes behind them on Thursday afternoon, as they managed to rough up Red Sox prized off-season acquisition Chris Sale.

Sale has been dominant early on in the season for the Red Sox, but was ultimately touched up for four runs on nine hits over five innings of work in which he struckout an uncharacteristic one batter. Sale, who has been known for his multi-strikeout performances, admitted that “things just weren’t working out today”, as he recorded his first loss of the season.

Jsoh Donaldson opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when he lined a single to left to allow Devon Travis to trot home with the game’s opening run. Kendrys Morales would tack another run on when a routine single would be misplayed by Jackie Bradley Jr., allowing Donaldson to get the extra base and slide home safely.

The Jays would continue their offensive onslaught against Sale, with Russell Martin almost knocking Sale to the ground with a hard single up the middle to expand the Jays’ lead to three before Josh Donaldson would end Sale’s night with a 419 foot blast that would land in the second deck in left field.Things would quiet down on the offensive side of the ball for the Jays until the eighth inning when Justin Smoak ripped a double to the left-centre field gap to score Troy Tulowitzki from first.

J.A. Happ was throwing the ball well for the Jays before he was forced to leave the game with a hip flexor strain in the fourth inning. The veteran southpaw had been flat out dealing, surrendering just two hits through his short outing while striking out three. Francisco Liriano would come in from the ‘pen and go to work, throwing 4 2/3 hitless innings to qualify for his first win of the season.

The Blue Jays will kick off a seven game road trip tomorrow evening in Anaheim as they take on the Angels. Marco Estrada (0-2, 2.84) will get the ball searching for his first win of the season. The Angels will turn to lefty Tyler Skaggs (2-1, 3.15), who has been off to a tremendous start to the season.

Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

Marco Estrada was unable to record his first win of the season, a win that has been eluding him for the past three weeks, spanning four starts. The veteran righty went the distance for the Jays in a losing effort, surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out six.

Estrada’s complete game effort was beaten out by Tyler Skaggs, who also put together a complete game for the Angels. Skaggs went nine strong innings, keeping the Jays lineup at bay for the entire night, surrendering just four hits.

Mike Trout, Yunel Escobar, and Carlos Perez all drove in runs for the Angels, who homered twice off of Estrada, who seemed to have issues keeping his breaking pitches down in the zone.

“It’s tough when your fastball is feeling good but you can’t get the location on your off-speed pitches,” Estrada said after the game. “It’s even tougher when you don’t throw 95.”

The Jays will look to bounce back and continue their winning ways tomorrow evening in Anaheim. Aaron Sanchez (2-0, 1.19) will take the ball for the Blue Jays as he seeks out his third victory of the season, and will be opposed by lefty Andrew Heaney (1-0, 3.57). Heaney will represent the fifth straight left-handed starter that the Jays will face, dating back to the series opener against the Boston Red Sox.

Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

Aaron Sanchez twirled a two-hit gem in his fourth start of the season and the Toronto Blue Jays pulled out a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday evening.

Sanchez went the distance in a 124 pitch effort, a career high for the young righty who had all his pitches working tonight. The hard throwing righty managed to sit down the last 19 batters in order after allowing two runners to reach base in the bottom half of the third inning.

The only scoring play of the game occurred in the top of the third inning, when a throwing error from Yunel Escobar allowed Kevin Pillar to reach second and extend the inning for the Blue Jays. On the same play, outfielder Dalton Pompey was able to scurry over to third base, setting up two runners in scoring position for Devon Travis. Travis would promptly line to center for a single, allowing Pompey to score easily from third and Pillar sliding in safely before the tag right behind him.

The Blue Jays will look to pick up back-to-back wins tomorrow as fiery righty Marcus Stroman (0-0, 1.59) takes the hill in search of his first win against former Blue Jay pitcher Jesse Chavez (1-1, 4.32).

Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

The StroShow was out in full affect on a warm sunny afternoon in Los Angeles, California. Marcus Stroman went 7 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays to pick up his first win of the season, an uncharacteristic outing in which he surrendered eight hits but managed to work out of several jams—ultimately surrendering just one run.

“I just wasn’t missing many bats,” said Stroman. “He sort of recognized that they weren’t really swinging and missing today early on. He’s a smart kid. Started working to contact, inducing a lot of weak pop flys and ground balls,” said Angels manager Mike Soscia.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring early against former Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Chavez with Jose Bautista ripping a double off the wall in right-centre field to score leadoff man Kevin Pillar. The Angels would answer quickly though, as star centerfielder Mike Trout would tie the game with a double that landed in almost the exact same spot as Bautista’s did, bringing a little deja vu to all the fans watching the game.

Things would remain scoreless for the next few innings until Josh Donaldson took over the game. The Bringer of Rain would split the gap with a liner to the left-center field wall, allowing both Ezequiel Carrera and Kevin Pillar to easily score. Donaldson wasn’t done there, as he would add an important insurance run in the top of the eighth inning with a absolute moonshot off of Angels reliever Bud Norris. Donaldson’s blast was estimated to have traveled 436 feet according to StatCast.

The Blue Jays will look to secure the series win tomorrow evening with Joe Biagini (0-2, 3.72) looking for his first major league win as a starter, and Angels ace Garrett Richards (1-2, 2.39) taking the hill to try to salvage the series for the Angels.

Re: North of the Border | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show 17)

The Blue Jays were unable to pull out the series victory on Monday evening against the Los Angeles Angels thanks to some extra inning heroics from Mike Trout.

Despite fighting back from a 3-1 deficit with two runs against Angels closer Cam Bedrosian, the Blue Jays were unable to complete the come back. Trailing 3-1 entering the ninth, Kendrys Morales would line to right to single to score pinch-runner Dalton Pompey from second. Pompey had swiped second earlier for his third stolen bag of the season. Pinch-hitter Josh Donaldson would then deliver off the bench with a RBI single to centre that would score, guess who, Marcus Stroman! Stroman had come off the bench to pinch run for Kendrys Morales, and the former infielder was able to speed around the bases to score the tying run standing.

Pitcher Marcus Stroman would be the one to score the tying run in the ninth.

The Jays’ momentum was short lived however, as the Halos would end things in the bottom of the tenth when Mike Trout lined to right for a single, allowing former Blue Jays speedster Ben Revere to easily beat the throw to the plate—crowing the Angels victorious and salvaging a sweep of the four game set.

Joe Biagini went six innings for the Blue Jays, with the fourth being his only struggle as he finished the night allowing four hits and three runs while striking out seven. Angels ace Garrett Richards was phenomenal all night, going eight strong innings in which he was able to keep the Blue Jays to four hits and only one run.

The Blue Jays will finish their road trip in St. Louis as they kick off a three game series against the Cardinals tomorrow evening. J.A. Happ (1-0, 1.06) will take the ball for the Blue Jays. Lance Lynn (2-0, 3.50) is expected to get the start for the Cardinals.
