MINOR MOVES: DECEMBER 11TH
Royals hire two minor league managers

By artoodeetoo, royalsbaseball.com
12/11/2017, 10:57 A.M.

Kansas City's minor league system filled two more openings on Saturday; as Dodgers first base coach George Lombard takes over the Idaho Falls Chukars job in the Pioneer League, and Brazilian Renan Sato was hired to fill the Royals' Dominican League managerial opening. Sato was a coach on the 2017 Brazilian national team that failed to make it out of the World Baseball Classic qualifier.

Sato takes over a 31-22 squad that was guided by Miguel Bernard, who is now managing the Lexington Legends at the A-ball level. Lombard's job is much tougher, as he takes over a team that won only eleven of its seventy-six games last year. It is the first managerial job for both men.

COZART, ROYALS AGREE TO ONE-YEAR PACT
Veteran acquisition expected to take leadership role

By artoodeetoo, royalsbaseball.com
12/11/2017, 02:23 P.M.

Kansas City finally threw their hat in the free agency ring, as they reached a one-year agreement with former Reds and Padres shortstop Zack Cozart. His deal is for $900,000 as a base, with incentives that take it just over $1M. He made $5.32M last season before being shipped to San Diego in a cost-dumping move at the trade deadline.

Cozart, 32, had fallen out of favor with the Reds, thanks to the emergence of Eugenio Suarez and rookie infielder Jose Peraza. He played in eighty-seven games, making only twenty-seven starts in that time frame, mainly as a pinch-hitter and late-inning defensive replacement. The Royals are hoping he can regain his 2016 form, when he stroked twenty-eight doubles and sixteen homeruns in just 121 games, hitting .252.

He provides a veteran and solid defensive presence for what should be a young Royals infield, where the elder statesmen of the past few years in Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas are now both gone. Kansas City had actually expressed interest in acquiring Cozart at the deadline last year, but no official offers had been extended to the Reds before he was traded on July 25th.

This signing comes on the heels of the acquisition of Chi Chi Gonzalez from Texas yesterday morning, as the Royals look to bolster their roster heading into the 2018 season.

HUGE TRADES CAP BUSY DAY TWO
Yankees add pitching, outfield depth

MLB NewsWire
12/12/2017

Things are quiet in Orlando as the sun rises on the third of four days in the Sunshine State, but the day ended in a flurry last night, as veteran pitchers Jeremy Jeffress and Edinson Volquez found themselves switching teams. Cleveland made a bold move, trading popular outfielder Michael Brantley to the Rangers for Jeffress, as Texas unloads another pitcher in a matter of days. The other hurler, Chi Chi Rodriguez, was flipped to Kansas City for third baseman Hunter Dozier the night before the Winter Meetings officially kicked off.

Volquez is not only flipping teams, but flipping leagues. He'll return to the American League, but this time as a New York Yankee. General manager Brian Cashman sent third baseman Jae-Gyun Hwang and infield prospect Yeison Corderrera to Miami for Volquez, who joins a pitching-starved rotation that ranked dead last in the American League in starters' ERA. Despite a high ERA (5.11) in 2017, his FIP was 4.07 and was a 2.3 WAR player.

It wasn't the only move the Yanks made on Monday -- they also traded for Cincinnati outfielder Phil Ervin; sending minor-league catchers Donny Sands and Eduardo Navas to Cincinnati, who traded starting catcher Devin Mesoraco to Washington yesterday as well.

In other moves, the Cubs made up for the loss of Wade Davis by signing closers Jeanmar Gomez and Brandon Kintzler to multi-year deals. Kintzler was signed on Saturday, the 9th, for three years and nearly $33M. Gomez signed a two-year pact that will pay out a total of $21M.

Another hotly-pursued reliever, Addison Reed, was also picked up late last night by the Dodgers, inking a two-year deal worth $5.2M. The Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Royals, and Dodgers all pursued the righty flamethrower before landing in Los Angeles. The best reliever remaining on the market is dimunitive Korean righty Jae-Sung Pak, a fireballing righty that accumulated a 1.87 ERA in five seasons in the KBL before posting as a free agent this season.

MOUSTAKAS, ESTRADA HEADLINE DAY THREE
'Moose' signs six-year contract

MLB NewsWire
12/13/2017

Along with the Mets, the Yankees have been one of the busiest teams at the Winter Meetings, as they traded for reserve outfielder Phil Ervin and pitcher Edinson Volquez on the event's second day. Earlier today, they signed former Royals and Mets third baseman Mike Moustakas to a six-year deal that will pay out just over $51M over the life of the deal. He hit .242 with twenty-one homeruns and 77 RBI between his time with the two teams.

The Angels also scored a huge win in free agency, as they signed former Pirates and Mets infielder Neil Walker to a four-year contract, just a day after landing highly-touted infield prospect Alen Hanson in a deal with the Pirates.

Marco Estrada also found a landing spot, as the former Blue Jay landed a two-year, $39.8M deal with the Cubs, effectively replacing Jake Arrieta's spot on the roster. Estrada pitched to a 4.01 ERA in 2017, and notched a career-high 3.6 WAR.

Only one major trade went through, as Colorado shipped catcher Tony Wolters to Milwaukee for outfielder Kyle Wren.

METS CONTINUE SPEND-HAPPY WAYS
Winter Meetings wind down with brisk final day

MLB NewsWire
12/14/2017

Both New York teams have had a busy offseason, but none have been more active than the defending National League-champ Mets, who have made a flurry of huge moves to try and get back to the World Series for the third time in four years. They've lost contributors like Lucas Duda, Addison Reed, Jay Bruce, and now Neil Walker, after the Mets failed in their bid to re-sign him after not reaching an extension agreement before free agency. Walker signed with the Angels yesterday for four years at around $36M over the life of the contract, filling a huge hole on the Halos' roster.

Buoyed by two deep playoff runs in the last several seasons; the Mets have used funds from that, and the money freed up by the defections to add to their roster. In the wake of the Walker news, the Mets traded established young lefty Steven Matz to Colorado for All-Star second baseman D.J. LeMahieu in a deal that sent shockwaves through the league. LeMahieu signed a $13.5M contract for one year earlier with Colorado to fend off arbitration. However, there was at least one person who was not caught off-guard by the move.

"Obviously, the Mets feel like Gsellman is ready to go and produce at a high level, and Matz is the cheapest and most expendable," said one unidentified NL executive to Yahoo! Sports baseball writer Jeff Passan at the Winter Meetings, referring to Mets 24-year old right-handed pitching prospect Robert Gsellman; who made five appearances in the playoffs last season, including two strong starts. "They really, really wanted Neil (Walker) back, so it's not surprising they made such a move. He was far and away the best available at that position, through free agency. The Rockies also badly needed young starting pitching; it was a great move for both sides."

New York has made some other headline-grabbing moves, like signing Carlos Santana and another former Rockies star in Carlos Gonzalez to play first base and right field, respectively. They re-signed mercurial righty Matt Harvey to a $12.6M, one-year extension to stave off arbitration one last year, and dished out multi-year extensions to arb-eligible Zack Wheeler (six years) and Noah Syndergaard (seven years), making an extension with Matz unlikely in the future.

In addition, even with Jeurys Familia already entrenched in the closer's role, they went and grabbed Craig Kimbrel and signed him to a three-year deal as insurance, giving new manager Carl Gadd some great flexibility in the late innings.

"They're determined to get back and win the whole pie this year," the same executive remarked to Passan. "They've suffered some heavy losses, but they have to be the prohibitive favorite to get back to the World Series, thanks to their aggressiveness. And they're going to be good for the foreseeable future if they can find some young bats in the pipeline to go with that pitching."

Gadd, 52, took over as the manager after Terry Collins' retirement last month, signing a five-year contract worth a reported $4M. He is the first Australian-born manager in Major League history, and was most recently one of general manager Sandy Alderson's right-hand men in the front office. He has managed in the ABL (Australian Baseball League), but has never managed on any level in Major League Baseball or the minors.

ROYALS MAILBAG: POST-WINTER MEETINGS
Mixed bag of results

By artoodeetoo, royalsbaseball.com
12/17/2017, 11:17 A.M.

Bryan asks: What were your overall thoughts?

League-wide, the Mets have won the off-season already. They re-signed Zack Wheeler, Matt Harvey, AND Noah Syndergaard. They upgraded at first base with Carlos Santana, and ably replaced Jay Bruce in right with Carlos Gonzalez. They traded Steven Matz for another former Rockie in D.J. LeMahieu to upgrade second base, which was another good move since they have pitching that is ready to take over, and they won't be able to afford him now anyway. To paraphrase a line from a famous movie -- Romo, Kimbrel, Familia, oh my! That is a fanbase that is starving for a World Series title. They have to be the prohibitive favorite out of the National League to get back there for the third time in four seasons.

As it pertains to the Royals, they weren't as active as I thought they would be, but overall they did well. Signing Zack Cozart won't get a bunch of headlines; but it's an solid, economical, low-risk move. I'll be surprised if he's the offensive player that he was two years ago. But Raul Mondesi wasn't very good at shortstop defensively, and Cozart has been one of the better defenders at shortstop in recent seasons (2017 notwithstanding). The Royals probably won't be great offensively this year, so prioritizing defense is a smart play. This move relegates Whit Merrifield and Ramon Torres to reserve roles, which is likely a better fit for their talents.

My thoughts on the Hunter Dozier-for-Chi Chi Gonzalez trade are mixed. The Royals' organizational depth at third base makes this an acceptable risk; along with Gonzalez' age (25), but the chances are very, very real that he won't be the same as he was before TJ surgery. Now, the good news -- the Royals have done pretty well with rehabilitation projects (Dave Eiland helps, too). Chris Young, Mike Minor, and Kris Medlen immediately come to mind. I don't feel that Dozier is going to be a superstar, but if he ends up as a .260/15/80 guy down the road, that might hurt a little bit. Especially if Cheslor Cuthbert can't improve on his raw power numbers.

Jason asks: Are there other moves that you'd like to see?

They need to fortify the back end of the bullpen; as Santiago Casilla can't be counted on at this point, and we won't see Joakim Soria back until at least the All-Star break. The team's pursuit of Korean fire-balling reliever Jae-sung Pak is interesting; as the Royals as a general rule usually stay away from newly-posted foreign players in free agency (at least they have largely done so with the Glass family's ownership).

His profile is similar to Kelvin Herrera's, the same physical build with two plus-pitches -- a fastball that can touch triple digits while sitting in the high 90's, and a low 90's slider. He's prone to walks (98 BB in 214 IP), but fanned a mind-blowing 348 in that same time frame over five seasons in the Korean leagues with a 1.87 ERA. Obviously, the quality of competition has to be considered, but those are impressive numbers no matter how you slice it. Those are closer-type numbers that would fit well in the back of a bullpen.

The only problem with him are his contract demands. His rumored asking price is in the 3/45 or 4/40 range, which is All-Star closer-type of money. It's a huge risk for a guy who hasn't thrown one American professional pitch, and I'm not sure if the Royals should be in the business of taking on that kind of risk with the limited resources they have. Sure, they can get creative with options and incentives; but it would have to be a team option with little or no buyout for it to make sense. The rumor is that the contract has to be fully guaranteed, so player options are probably out.

Gregg asks: Ryan O'Hearn opening day first baseman?

I don't see any way that he's not, unless there is an injury. Artsiv Worbyeln hinted at the possibility that he could be held down until after June 1st, but they really need a powerful left-handed bat. That would allow Alex Gordon to remain in the leadoff spot, where he's been best at with his ability to work counts.

Jim asks: Give a shot at the Opening Day lineup and rotation.

Let's keep in mind there's a loooooong way to go, but as it stands right now:

From 1-through-9: Alex Gordon (LF), Raul Mondesi (2B), Brandon Moss (DH), Salvador Perez (C), Ryan O'Hearn (1B), Jorge Soler (RF), Cheslor Cuthbert (3B), Andrew Stevenson (CF), Zack Cozart (SS).

1-through-5 in the rotation: Ian Kennedy (R), Danny Duffy (L), Jason Hammel (R), Nathan Karns (R), Jake Junis (R)
Bullpen: Chi Chi Gonzalez (R), Kevin McCarthy (R), Scott Alexander (L), Travis Wood (L), Matt Strahm (L), Chris Young (R), Santiago Casilla (R)

2017 RULE 5 DRAFT CONCLUDES
Ten selections are lowest in over a decade

MLB NewsWire
12/19/2017

An unusually low number of players were taken in yesterday's Rule 5 draft, as only ten players were taken throughout the five-round event. The top pick was catcher Garrett Stubbs, a Houston farmhand that now heads to the South Side to play for the White Sox. Stubbs was one of three catchers to be taken, along with Oakland's Beau Taylor going to Cincinnati, and the Dodgers' Wynston Sawyer won't even have to rent out his condo as he'll be heading a little further south to play for the Angels.

Pittsburgh also selected two outfielders in the wake of losing Andrew McCutchen to San Francisco, as Drew Ferguson from Oakland and Milwaukee's Ryan Cordell come over from their respective organizations. Detroit also beefed up its rotation and bullpen with a trio of right-handers, headed by Jaime Schultz from Tampa Bay.

The results in their entirety are below, courtesy of MLB.com:
