2018 DRAFT PREVIEW
Royals with three picks in first two rounds

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Royals' contingent of general manager Artsiv Worbyeln, scouting director Lonnie Goldberg, and minor-league director/assistant GM J.J. Piccolo descended on New Jersey for the 2018 draft earlier today, as they make their final preparations for the 50-round behemoth to take place tomorrow.
There really isn't a consensus from amateur baseball experts like Ben Badler or Jim Callis on where they'll go with the first pick this year, because they have a new frontman that will be pulling the trigger on any picks this year. However, they do expect that the first-year GM will lean heavily on his two advisors in Goldberg and Piccolo for their input.
"Guys like Piccolo and Goldberg have more years of experience in baseball than he's been alive," Callis said of Worbyeln in a pre-draft interview with a Kansas City sports radio station. "It also doesn't hurt you have the architect of a World Series champion in Dayton Moore in an office not far from yours."
Callis thinks the Royals will opt for college pitching in the first round; taking Auburn righty Casey Mize, citing a lack of MLB-ready pitching in the higher levels of their minor league system. Badler has the Royals going with a longer-term prospect in high school righty Kumar Rocker, who is committed to Vanderbilt.
In addition, Callis also feels Mize could be someone who challenges for a roster spot in Kansas City by 2019 if he goes to the Royals.
"You look at what they have in the rotation right now and what's in their lower levels, with Jason Hammel nearing the end of his career, and Kyle Zimmer's arm troubles continuing," he said. "There's not a lot of hope at this point that Zimmer will pitch again, let alone be a reliable bullpen arm at the least. Mize has the makeup and stuff to be fast-tracked, and my guess is that as long as he keeps the walks in check, he'll progress quickly."
What they do agree on is the top pick, as both have Clemson outfielder Seth Beer going first overall to Milwaukee. Other MLB experts, but not necessarily draftniks, like Jayson Stark, Buster Olney, and Rivals.com's Kendall Jacobs, also have Beer going with the number-one pick.
Thanks to the team not signing 2017 second-round pick at catcher M.J. Melendez (who is back in the draft this year after a one-year JUCO stint), they have two second-round picks.
"This is where Kansas City can build some real pitching depth," said Badler of the Royals' two second-round picks. "It's the biggest hole in their minor league system after all of the trades they've made for postseason runs the last handful of seasons. There are some real nice collegiate options that should be there at those picks, like Tennessee's Daniel Vasquez and Florida's Chandler Day. Paired with Rocker, that's a heck of haul in the first several rounds."
