Re: Splash Hits

Turned out to be just the third time since the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966 that they won a game in which they allowed 19 or more hits.

Ozzie Albies crosses the plate on what proved to be a game-winning homer.

All 3 Atlanta homers (Acuna was the other) were to left so had a good view of all of them.

Giants Place Waiver Claim On Royals C Perez

Despite the play of recently-acquired Travis Shaw, San Francisco's front office signaled that it is still pondering a future move of Buster Posey from catcher to first base as it placed a waiver claim on Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez, who has been placed on trade waivers by KC. It is very unlikely, however, that the Giants would acquire Perez for nothing. The teams have two days in which they could negotiate a trade, or the Royal could remove Perez from waivers and retain him for the remainder of the season. Perez is a career .271 hitter with 131 home runs in 6-plus seasons with the Royals.

Giants Erupt In 9th To Clobber Snakes

After a July in which they posted a losing record, the San Francisco Giants were looking to begin their August slate with a win, and they did so in smashing fashion. After 8 innings of play, the opener of a 4-game series against the D-Backs in Arizona was a 1-run game, with the Giants up 4-3. San Francisco had established a 4-0 lead only to see the Snakes chip away at it with a trio of solo homers. But then the Jints exploded for a 7-run 9th - 6 of those runs scored with 2 outs- to carry the day with an 11-3 victory.

In the top of the 5th, Buster Posey broke up a 0-0 pitchers’ duel with a 2-out solo shot. Chris Shaw then made it back-to-back jacks on consecutive pitches and 2 AB’s later Silver Slugger pitcher Madison Bumgarner posted himself to a 4-0 lead with his own 2-run blast. MadBum (9-8, 3.79), however, also surrendered 2 of Arizona’s long balls. The 9th inning explosion began with Evan Longoria leading off with a triple and scoring on a base hit by Gregor Blanco. The stretch of six runs with two away started with a 2-RBI double by Alen Hanson (his third two-bagger in a perfect 5-for-5 outing) and concluded with Travis Shaw going yard to drive in the final 2 runs.

MadBum watches his first homer of 2018, the 18th of his career.

Alen Hanson drives in runs 2 and 3 of the 9th.

Jints Saved By Longo After Blowing 4-Run Lead

Evan Longoria’s 2-run homer punctuated the San Francisco Giants’ 3-run first inning, but he delivered a bigger hit in the 8th. The Giants plated their 4th run in the 2nd, but during the following 5 innings in which they failed to score, they squandered that that 4-run lead and the score was tied at 4 when they came to bat in the 8th. Brandon Crawford led off with a double and an adavanced to 3rd on a ground out to 2nd by Travis Shaw. Longo then stroked a base hit to right for what proved to be the game-winning RBI. The blown lead left Johnny Cueto with a no decision and Will Smith (1-2, 2.75) picked up his first win of the season despite giving up the tying run. Mark Melancon earned his 29th save and the record of losing pitcher Brad Boxberger dropped to 0-8. The 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks assures the Giants of no worse than a split of the 4-game series and keeps them 1 game back in the NL West race.

Brandon Crawford scored the game’s first run on a based hit by Travis Shaw.

Alen Hanson is about to hit a solo shot for a 4-0 San Francisco lead.

Alex Avila tried to stretch a double into a triple and got gunned
down by Brandon Crawford on a relay from Gregor Blanco.

Pen Blows 4-1 Lead, Longo Saves Giants Again

The San Francisco Giants have won their 5th straight game and a second consecutive series, but the achievement only came after a 4-1 lead was squandered and Evan Longoria came to the rescue for the second day in a row. On the game’s second pitch, Miguel Gomez took Robbie Ray deep to the Chase Field pool. Heliot Ramos and Travis Shaw stroked back-to-back doubles and the Giants were up 2-0 when the Snakes came to bat. Arizona plated a run in the bottom of the second and had an opportunity to tie, but A.J. Pollock, who had been plunked by Jeff Samardzija, tried to tag on a shallow fly and was gunned down at the plate by Alen Hanson. In the 4th, San Francisco extended its lead to 4-1 on a solo homer by Shaw and a RBI double by Brandon Crawford. It was still 4-1 with 2 away and a man on 1st in the bottom of the 8th when Hunter Strickland hit David Peralta on a 1-2 pitch. Strickland’s next pitch struck Pollock on the forearm, resulting in a hooking by Bruce Bochy. The first batter faced by Derek Law, Alex Avila, drove a bases-clearing double into the right field corner to tie the game. Law however, did get the third out and pitched a scoreless 9th to get the Giants into extra innings. With 2 gone in the top of the 10th, Longo went yard on the first pitch he saw from Randall Delgado, setting up the victory in which Mark Melancon recorded his 30th save of the season.
