Game Notes
The Toronto Blue Jays return home for the first time in nearly two weeks as they welcome the Houston Astros into town. Despite all the scandals surrounding their team, the Astros have managed to work their way to an MLB-best 35-12 record. With the Blue Jays not far behind them at 33-14, this series has the makings of a tough matchup that should make for plenty of entertainment.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. continues his tear at the plate for the Blue Jays, pushing his batting average even higher to a team-leading .335, while Teoscar Hernandez has really picked up the slack at the bottom of the lineup with a strong resurgence in May after a tough April showing. Outfielder Billy McKinney continues to rake at the plate as manager Charlie Montoyo continues to find ways to get him consistent plate appearances. McKinney is hitting .538 over his last 3 games, and has been a huge boost to the offence since he was called up.

The top of the lineup has been impressive for the Astros all season long, and pose a major threat to the Blue Jays' pitching staff. Michael Brantley, Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, and Yordan Alvarez are all hitting well above the .300 mark - with power too. The top four hitters in the Astros lineup have been a major contributor to the team's success thus far.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Shoemaker Quiets Astros' Bats In Rout

The Toronto Blue Jays kept rolling with a 9-3 rout of the Houston Astros on Monday afternoon. Matt Shoemaker led the way for the Blue Jays with a complete game performance, his second of the season. Shoemaker allowed three runs on 10 hits but was able to make quick work of the Astros, requiring only 96 pitches over nine innings. Shoemaker induced weak contact all afternoon, and helped himself out with eight strikeouts.

Billy McKinney once again led the Blue Jays' offence, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and three runs scores. McKinney has been on a tear since the Blue Jays recalled him from Triple-A Buffalo earlier in the month, and has put together an insane .528 batting average at the big league level this season. Cavan Biggio also went deep in the victory, with a three-run blast in the fifth inning that chased Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. from the ballgame.

McCullers Jr. would be saddled with his first loss of the season after the Blue Jays got to him for seven runs on seven hits in just 4 2/3 innings of work. McCullers Jr. didn't do himself any favours, as he struggled with command an issued five free passes in his short outing.

The Astros got all their offence from Yordan Alvarez, who scored Houston's first run of the ballgame with a booming RBI double off the right field wall in the third inning before connecting on a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Those three runs would account for all the offence that the Astros could muster against Shoemaker, who picked up his sixth win of the season.

Blue Jays right fielder Randal Grichuk left the game in the sixth inning after losing a routine fly ball in the sun. The ball would appear to hit Grichuk in the head on the way down as he battled the sun, and he was immediately replaced by Jonathan Davis. The Blue Jays have yet to reveal the extent of Grichuk's injury, but it can be expected that he'll miss a few days.

The two teams go back at it tomorrow evening as the Astros look to get back into the win column against Blue Jays sophomore starter Trent Thornton.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Blue Jays’ Top Prospect Pearson Suffers Broken Hand

The Toronto Blue Jays got some unfortunate news on the injury front as they announced that top prospect Nate Pearson has suffered a broken hand during his start with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Pearson suffered the injury after being struck by a comeback line drive, and is expected to miss the next 2 to 3 months. Pearson has impressed at every level of competition that he has faced in his short career and is well regarded as one of the top (if not best) pitching prospects in the game right now. In addition to being the Blue Jays’ top prospect, Pearson is ranked number 10 by MLB Pipeline.

Pearson has yet to make his MLB debut, but the hard throwing righty has shown that MLB competition is no struggle for his with a strong showing in Spring Training this year and a mid-season call-up was inevitable. With his new injury, Pearson’s MLB timeline will most obviously be impacted, as he may not be able to make his MLB debut until 2021 if he is not called up in September. More importantly, the injury represents a barrier for having Pearson on any potential playoff roster.

The Blue Jays will continue to fight for a playoff spot without a looming appearance from their top prospect, and will take on the Houston Astros tomorrow evening at Rogers Center.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Urquidy Twirls Complete Game As Astros Slug Their Way To Victory

One day after being blown out by the Toronto Blue Jays, the Houston Astros bounced back with an impressive performance of their own, slugging their way to a 9-0 victory over the Blue Jays.

Yordan Alvarez continued swinging a hot bat the plate for the Astros, going 3-for-5 with a pair of two-run home runs and a double. Alvarez drove in four of the Astros' nine runs on the evening and improved his season batting average to an impressive .316. Star third baseman Alex Bregman added a two-run homer in the third inning, and Carlos Correa capped off the offensive fireworks with a three-run blast in the eighth.

Astros starter Jose Urquidy continued his dominant start to the regular season with a complete game shutout performance. The 25 year old starter from Mexico held the Blue Jays to five hits while picking up a four strikeouts. The Blue Jays entered the ballgame with one of the league's hottest lineups, but they were held off the scoreboard for the first time this season by Urquidy.

Jays starter Trent Thornton didn't have the same amount of luck as Urquidy, as the hard throwing sophomore lasted just 4 2/3 innings and got roughed up to the tune of six runs on eight hits. The Astros did most of their damage against Thornton in the third inning, forcing him to throw 38 pitches while teeing off for a pair of two-run blasts.

The Blue Jays and Astros go back at it tomorrow evening in the series finale, as both clubs look to pad their leads in their respective division standings in the rubber match of the three game set.

Re: A New Era | Toronto Blue Jays (MLB The Show)

Blue Jays Complete Comeback Against Osuna, Astros

After a pair of lopsided blowouts in the first two games of the three game series between the Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays, the two teams needed extra innings in order to decide the winner of the rubber match series finale on Wednesday evening.

While the Astros struck first in the top of the first inning thanks to a a Michael Brantley lead off single followed by a Alex Bregman double, the Blue Jays would storm to a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning after a Carlos Correa error set the table for Bo Bichette to drive in two runs with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.

The Blue Jays' lead was short-lived though, as the Astros would rally back against Blue Jays reliever Shun Yamaguchi thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Jose Altuve and George Springer.

Things would remained tied until the tenth inning, when Yulieski Gurriel connected with an RBI double off Blue Jays closer Ken Giles. Altuve would come around to score from first on the RBI double, as it marked one of the few runs that Giles has surrendered this season.

The Blue Jays would bail out Giles in the bottom half of the inning against former Jays closer Roberto Osuna. A leadoff single from Randal Grichuk followed by a walk to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set the stage for Rowdy Tellez to deliver some extra inning heroics. Tellez connected on a 2-1 fastball from Osuna, and promptly deposited it into the right field seats to give the Blue Jays a 7-5 walk-off victory.

Both Astros starter Josh James and Blue Jays starter Chase Anderson pitched well for their respective teams. James tossed an impressive 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits while using his explosive upper-90s fastball to rack up six strikeouts. Anderson got off to a rough start in the first inning, but managed to work around seven hits, surrendering two runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

The Blue Jays continue their home stand tomorrow as they welcome the Baltimore Orioles into town. Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the ball for the Blue Jays in the series opener.

Game Notes
The Toronto Blue Jays welcome the Baltimore Orioles into town for a four game set featuring two teams on the exact opposite of the spectrum. For the Orioles, they enter play on Thursday sporting a lowly 14-35 record and seem to have their sights set on the future. On the other hand, the Blue Jays have impressed many people through the first month and a half of action, sporting an AL East-leading 35-15 record.

The Blue Jays' offence has been led by a red-hot group of bats in the outfield, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Teoscar Hernandez, Randal Grichuk and Billy McKinney all heating up at the plate. Paired with some stellar starting pitching that they have received throughout this month and the Blue Jays look like a very tough team to beat.

On the flip side of things, shortstop Jose Iglesias represents the lone bright spot in a struggling Orioles lineup. The former Tigers shortstop is hitting an impressive .312 to of the leadoff spot for the Orioles, and is one of two Orioles hitters hitting above the .300 mark (with the other being Rio Ruiz.
