Crushin' at Camden: An Orioles OOTP 23 Playthrough

Breaking: The Baltimore Orioles have fired GM Mike Elias after 3 seasons with the club, putting together three pretty bad products on the field. The club has hired GM Glenn Gibson, head of amateur baseball scouting from the San Francisco Giants. Gibson, 47, will be taking the GM role for the Orioles, a team which is in the midst of rebuilding.

Overview: The Orioles finished 2021 with a record of 52-110, and will have the worst roster on paper in the stacked AL East, and potentially one of the worst records in MLB for the 2022 season. Baltimore is led by 2021 All-Star Cedric Mullins, SP John Means, and IF/OF Trey Mancini. The Orioles will draft 1st in the 2022 amateur baseball draft.

Strategy: Build for the year 2025. This team is not good right now, and isn't going to be good for a couple of years. We will always put the best product on the field possible, and will spend the full budget that the owner gives us. However, most of our signings in the first two years will be players built for the future, or short team deals that can fetch us a prospect at the deadline.

Rules/Settings:
Ratings: 20-80 (increments of 5)
Scouting: Normal
Trade difficulty: 2 upticks to both "favor prospects" and "easy/hard
Injuries: Normal
Extra Innings Rule: Off
Waiver Claims: 4 before the trade deadline (for my team only)

CATCHERS
13 Jacob Nottingham
23 Robinson Chirinos

Chirinos, a 9 year MLB veteran, will serve as the teams primary catcher. He played his 2021 season with the Chicago Cubs. Nottingham, 27, has played nearly 2 years in the bigs with the Brewers and Mariners. He can hit for power, but is a fairly poor defender and strikes out a lot.

INFIELDERS
3 Jorge Mateo
6 Ryan Mountcastle
11 Chris Owings
12 Rougned Odor
16 Trey Mancini
29 Ramon Urias
82 Kelvin Gutierrez

The club will primarily start the IF with Mountcastle-Odor-Urias-Gutierrez, with Mateo and Owings rotating in at all 4 positions, and against left handers. Trey Mancini will serve as Baltimore's primary DH.

7 Kyle Stowers
21 Austin Hayes
25 Anthony Santander

31 Cedric Mullins

The OF will be Santander-Mullins,Hayes, with 24 year old Kyle Stowers and Ryan McKenna rotating at the corner OF position. Stowers will be making his MLB debut with Baltimore this season.

STARTING PITCHERS
45 Keegan Akin
47 John Means
48 Jorge Lopez
50 Bruce Zimmerman
68 Tyler Wells

The rotation will be thrown in an order of Wells-Means-Zimmerman-Lopez-Akin, with Wells making his first big league start against the Rays. He was acquired via the R5 draft prior to last season from the Minnesota Twins.

BULLPEN
15 Kyle Brnovich
28 Jordan Lyles
30 Antonio Velez
39 Kyle Braddish
43 Bryan Baker
51 Paul Fry
55 Dillion tate
74 Felix Bautista
87 Joey Krehbiel

Jordan Lyles will get the first crack at the closer position, per manager Hyde. Bradish and Brnovich will work in set-up roles, and will be the first to get a crack at the job if Lyles falters.

Re: Crushin' at Camden: An Orioles OOTP 23 Playthrough

April 2022 Review

Baltimore has finished the first month of the 2022 MLB season with an overall record of 8-13. The pitching carried the team, while the hitters struggled to get going out of the gates with the least amount of runs scored in the AL, at only 71. The lineup does lead the league in steals with 19. The starting pitching has been pounding the strike zone, with the 4th least walks in the AL.

Keegan Akin had a great month, throwing 20 innings while allowing only 7 runs for an ERA of 3.15. However, John Means struggled, allowing an ERA of 4.76 in 17 innings of work. The backend of the bullpen was great, but the front end struggled mightily. Waiver claim Lewis Thrope threw 4.1 innings allowing just 1 run while striking out 3.

Cedric Mullins has once again been the heartbeat of the squad, hitting for an OPS+ of just 100, but has stolen 9 bases, and been a great defender in CF. Rougned Odor, Austin Hays, and Ryan Mountcastle all hit at least 4 home runs this month. Trey Mancini struggled as the DH, hitting for just .125, and an OPS in the low .400s.

2022 MLB Draft Results

Orioles Draft Results

1.1 - CF Elijah Green - 18 - 65/50/60/60/50 70 POT

Green was the first pick in the draft, and project to be a great corner outfielder, with a chance to be a passable center fielder. He has great speed and base running ability, and looks the part of a future 5 tool player.
Best Tools

Supplemental 1.3 - SP Dalton Rogers - 21 - 60/45/45 55 POT

Rogers and Kumar Rocker, who was taken earlier, project as the best two college arms in the draft. The lefty has the best stuff of anyone in the draft with a plus pus changeup, and a sinker that sits at 93. He also features an average curveball. Rogers projects to be a middle of the rotation starter.

2.1 - 1B Yoel Tejada Jr - 18 - 60/55/70/55/50 - 65 POT

Tejada is one of the best high school hitters in the draft, with a real chance to be a fantastic first basemen, with a small chance at being able to handle third. The switch hitter has massive power for a high schooler, and should fill out his 6'7" frame as he progresses.

2.26 - SP Adam Mazur - 21 - 50/50/50 50 POT

The Iowa right hander doesn't project for much growth, but should be on the fast track to the big leagues after a dominant year for the Hawkeyes. He features a 4 seam, sinker, slider, and changeup. All of the pitches are above average offerings.

3.1 - 2B Andrew Pintar - 21 - 60/55/55/55/50 50 POT

Pintar, out of BYU, doesn't have a true defensive home at this time, but will likely play 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in his pro career. The right hander can also handle the outfield. He projects to be an average big league ball player, with a solid floor in the 3rd round.

4.1 - SP Spencer Miles - 21 - 45/60/50 45 POT

Miles, a right hander out of the University of Missouri, projects to be a back end starter with a quick path to the bigs. He features a plus plus slider, a sinker that sits at 93-95, and an average changeup. If starting doesn't work out, he should be a great reliever with the slider.

5.1 - SS Luke Hanson - 18 - 55/55/50/60/45 55 POT

Baltimore goes back to the high school ranks to round out the slot picks, this time taking a shortstop who has a chance to stick at the position. Hanson has a lot of development left to do, but if he reaches his top percentile he will be one of the top players at his position.

Hit: 1B Wilburn Furniss (75, Miami)
Gap Power: 3B Cayden Wallace (80, San Fran)
Power: 1B Wilburn Furniss (75, Miami)
Eye: SS Sterling Hayes (75, San Fran)
Stuff: SP Dalton Rogers (60, Baltimore)
Movement: SP Ben Watson (65, went to college)
Control: SP Justin West (70, Texas)

Baltimore Inks International Catcher

The Baltimore Orioles have signed 16 year old Dominican Catcher Oscar Vasquez to a minor league deal with the maximum 5 million dollar bonus. The 16 year old is already 6 foot 4 inches and weighs 195 pounds. He projects as a solid catcher, but will also have the fallback of playing 1st base. The Baltimore front office has Vasquez graded 80/55/45/55/80, while BBN is much less kind with ratings of 40/60/40/40/70. Vasquez throws right handed and hits left handed. He will work out of the international complex, and will likely debut sometime in 2024.
