MyNBA 2k22 Detroit Pistons

A few days ago, with the release of opening day roster, I decided to start a new active myNBA game.

After a big hesitation on team selection, mostly between Wizards and Pistons, I finally decided to go with Detroit (I may do another game in few months with Washington).

First i like the tradition of that franchise. Second I really enjoyed a game i had with them for 3 seasons with 2k21. Last it is an exciting team to build from with a good mix of talent and complexity.

Game setup

For the gameplay I am using Schnaidt1 sliders (here).

For the league setup I consulted a few slidders proposed mostly here but then i reworked them a bit and based on my experience with 2k21 (see dedicated post here below).

For played games I will use 10 minutes QT with mormalised sim minutes but not normalised stats.

Franchise state

Roster wise there is a great core of young talents to develop. Cade of course is a projected leader in that franchise, but players like Bey, Stewart or even a Saben Lee seem pretty exciting to develop.

Salary cap gives enough flexibility to add few assets on next couple of seasons before we need to resign that (hopefully developped) young core using bird exception.
However, we are very conscious that Detroit will not be the favourite landing spot for high profile free agents.

Draft capital is a bit tricky. Like a solid half of the league, OKC owns our 1st round selection, however we have a lottery protection. So normally we should be a lottery team. So OKC will likely own our 2023 1st round selection.

We have then 1st rounds selection for 2024, 2025 and 2026, however all our second round picks are gone and we just have a 2nd round from Sacramento for 2024.

Tanking or playing

Detroit is considered a rebuild.

A very popular rebuild, is to go very quickly (with mostly simed games) to the next season. And then having normally a top 5 pick start signing big pioeces and make good picks.

Well this is not at all the way i will approach it.

First i dont see Detroit as a rebuild, i see Detroit as a developement. Because we need to develop our young talent and build a core foundation on our roster to expect to be competitive.

I will play a fair amount of games even if having simulation agmes is good as well to generate injuries. But i will play a fair amount of games so no one spend 45 to 60 minutes seating to be pathetic.

By the way winning some games or having some decent stats is for me the best way forward for this roster which clearly need development.


Important Note: given the practice schedule glitch i am advancing day by day and adjust training schedule accordingly. A benefit of that glitch, if i could say, is that i adjust my lineup based on fatigue for each single game even if the game is a sim.

Coaching Staff

I must say that having Dwane Casey is a huge plus in selecting Detroit. I see him as the perfect coach to develop that young roster. So i feel tied with him and he has a 4 years contract

I tried to make the best of the new detailed coaching staff feature of 2k22 (which is great). I added a few pieces including a sleep doctor because fatigue management is critical.

The players

The roster has a well liked base.

Ok we all know Cade Cunningham given the hype surrounding him since he was known to be eligible for the NBA draft.

But he is not alone I really like that roster which has just enough to build from and still a lot missing.

Jerami Grant for me is the main offensive option. He can do it all. I see him as a decent perimeter threat, and, he is able to attack the rim. He can very well fit at either small or power forward. For me he is our main scoring option until Cade matures.

Right after Jerami is Saddiq Bey in his sophomore season. Iwould like to develop him as an outside scorer which I believe would be good complimentary role with Cade, Grant or even Lee or Diallo set to drive to the rim and attract the defensive support.

Isaiah Stewart is another "core" player. in his sophomore season he looks like a solid investment at C even if he is a bit undersized.

Ok we must say few words on Cade. I believe he is the one I want to handle the ball when he is on the floor. He can really drive to the rim or be a playmaker. I see him as a perfect pick and roll ball handler. He can as well shoot but at least for this first season I dont see him used in that role. I see him as a bvall handler, hence he will be my starter at PG.

Dark Horses

Saben Lee has clearly been a pleasant surprise in Detroit. He is a real a threat to drive to the rim. He must work on his defensive skills and develop a better shooting. But in reality he looks like the main backup at point guard when Cade is on the bench.

Josh jackson... who remmember that he was drafted 4th overall by Phoenix in 2017 ? I believe he has excellent skills to be the perfect 3nD complement we are looking for in this roster. He ius ona contract year and I will definitely see how it works out but I project him having a solid part in this first season.

Traded from OKC last season, Hamidou Diallo is a very exciting explosive player. A pure slasher who should see playing time at SG.

The death question: Killian Hayes ?

Killian has been drafted 7th overall by Detroit but he had a difficult rookie season and a rough start in the NBA. He may still make it up to the expectation, he is only 20 years old, but 2k ratings for him havbe been pretty rough and it is very very difficult to give him playing time without injuries or fatigue.

So it is very difficult to project if he has a bright future in this team however we will not give up on him he has at least this full season to see how things develop.

The depth

Kelly Olynyk has been the main addition in free agency last offseason. He is a good strecht big but i am not a fan. I see him as mentor to help Stewart developement this season. Of course he will get playing time at C.

Cory Joseph is a mentor for us this season to try help Killian development.

Rodney McGruder has a good 3nD profiule which should earn him some playing time.

Trey Lyles coming from San Antonio should get playing time at power forward until a better option surfaces.

Rookie Isaiah Livers looks like a potential prospect at SF/PF with decent potential while Luka Garza looks like far away from being NBA ready with very limited tools.
