Big3 - 2.0

July 2022
Ice Cube and Colin Kaepernick Reveal 'New Look' Big 3
--Los Angeles--

Big 3 founder Ice Cube announced Colin Kaepernick's significant investment into the Big3 early this year, and now the pair have revealed a complete revamp of the 3v3 basketball league. International travel firm, Omega World Travel have purchased a significant stake in the league and the nature of the traveling league is being retooled.

With Omega as a new partner, the Big3 is now targeting vacation and resort towns with a live event model which encourages a 'several day experience' surrounding the game. Players will meet with fans and join in banquet dinners while also running small one-day afternoon and morning camps for kids. The league is targeting, mostly, resort towns and tourist destinations which fit tightly with the vacation package experience.

As for the actual games, the now 11-team Big3 will play twice a week from the end of July through the beginning of September with a caravan style schedule which will play games in a different host city each week. The eleven teams have all been re-branded in the standard city-nickname convention and each of the 11 cities will host two sets of games in a season. Hosting teams will receive a game off in each of the weeks following their hosting week to off-set the odd number of teams. Each team plays every other team twice for a total of 20 games.

The television experience should remain largely the same, with games televised on FS1 and FS2 with the occasional game on FX and FXX. The league is bringing its own broadcast and camera crews. Arenas have not yet been announced, but it's said the league is looking for short term rentals as opposed to longer commitments, so arenas may change from trip to trip. Ice Cube said he would love to see the Big3 play games on blacktops.

Ice Cube and Kaepernick called the partnership with Omega, 'a no-brainer' and claimed to be inspired by the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces and Connecticut Sun who are each owned by events companies. The league has completed an internal leaguewide draft to revamp rosters, all players have agreed to three-year commitments.

League rules remain, largely, the same. The win by two rule has been removed, the score target has been raised to 60. Roster rules have been adjusted upward again, this time to a minimum age of 30. All-existing Big3 players under 30 are grandfathered in, but players without Big3 years-of-service must be a minimum of 30 years old to enter the league.

Sunshine Sign Sullinger

July 2022

With league scrimmages and camps winding down, the Norfolk Sunshine make the first transaction of the fledgling Big3 2.0 season. Norfolk adds former Boston Celtic, Jared Sullinger. Sullinger was last in the NBA in 2017 with the Toronto Raptors but has since carved out a career in Asia. Spending the last few seasons with the Shenzhen Aviators, Sullinger had been one of the CBA's best players averaging 30 points on 50% from the floor in his first two seasons. Sullinger was also the best player for Anyang KGC, winners o the 2021 Korean Basketball League championship.

Sullinger's return to professional basketball in North America with the Norfolk Sunshine was welcomed by head coach Lisa Leslie. "We're in the business of winning basketball games, and Jared will help us do that." When asked if Sullinger figures to be a starter in the first game of the year Leslie said, "We'll have to see. We liked what we saw in the workouts, but no decisions have been made yet on the starting lineup."

The Sunshine face the Waves in the league's kickoff in Oahu at the end of the month.

Glen Rice Jr. Dominates Norfolk; Round 1 Wrap-Up

July 2022

The first round of Big3 matchups is complete for the year with Glen Rice Jr. stealing the show versus Norfolk. The 2018 Israeli Cup MVP accounted for 34 of the hometown Wave's 60 points in their 10 point win over the Sunshine. Rice was an outstanding 10 of 20 including 8 of 17 from downtown. Team captain Cuttino Mobley chipped in 14 with 4 three pointers of his own to move the hometown Waves to 1-0.

Norfolk struggled down the stretch despite keeping this interesting most of the way. Guard Franklin Session led the team with 28 points on 8 three pointers of his own, hardly taking a seat throughout. Debutant Jared Sullinger, had a hard time in his minutes. Getting the start alongside Session and Miličić, Sullinger struggled, going just 4 for 14 from the floor and picking up five personal fouls.

"That's just not the way we want to play. Fouling like that just handed them the game." said coach Lisa Leslie. And she isn't wrong. The Waves went 12 of 17 from the line, in large part thanks to Sullinger's persistent fouling. The Sunshine also had double the Waves turnovers (7 to 3) ensuring that it would be that much harder to come out on top in the race to 60.

It's game one of a long season, and the Sunshine will certainly look to even the score in their second matchup with the Waves later this year.

Round 1 Wrap-Up
Dušan Bulut explodes for 36 points as the Sin City Slashers down the Phoenix Heaters 62-45. Gary Payton Sr. went 4 of 13 from the field in a sluggish performance

Sek Henry left the game early with a groin injury in the Stowe Snow's 62-43 defeat to the Boca Ballers. All three Boca starters eclipsed 15 points (Adul-Rauf, Simmons, Lewis).

Sailors start three guards against Harpers Ferry, and win 60-37. Leandro Barbosa led the team with 28, Ty Lawson next with 18 and Filipino Senator Dondon Hontiveros brought in 8. Mike Taylor scored 18 on an efficient 7 of 13 for the Trek, but Jermaine Taylor's scoreless 15 minute shift ultimately torpedoes the Trek's chances of remaining competitive.

The Aspen Slopes had somewhere to be in a hurry as they notched the biggest margin of victory this week at 62-35 over the Pebble Beach Swing. The game ended in under twenty minutes, with star forward Michael Beasley scoring 32 points and snagging 8 boards. 15 a piece from fellow starters Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers meant that not a single point was needed from the bench to secure the win. Jason Richardson's 16 points led the way for the Swing; he was the only Pebble Beach player in double figures.

Re: Big3 - 2.0

This is a pretty interesting concept. Iso Joe is nasty.

At the League's Halfway Mark, Iso Joe is King and Boca Ballers are Undefeated

With the season roughly halfway through, the Boca Ballers are top of the Big3 mountain. Sporting a perfect 10-0 record, the league's Floridian outfit is the team to beat. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and Rashard Lewis boast unfathomable three point percentages while Jonathon Simmons anchors the team's defense. And unlike many team's in the league, the Ballers play five men deep with Jamario Moon and Abdoulaye N'Doye seeing significant minutes off the bench.

Meanwhile for the team on the lake, Iso Joe continues to dominate. Joe Johnson was the best player in the Big3 first incarnation and the trend continues in the rebirthed second edition of the league. Johnson is averaging just a shade over thirty points a game and just over nine rebounds. The Toledo Lakers are not the most balanced club in the league, but Johnson is sporting efficiency numbers better than some teams in the league.

Bringing up the rear through the halfway mark are the Phoenix Heaters and the Norfolk Sunshine. The Heaters, led by Gary Payton Sr., lack offensive firepower and have struggled to score. In Southern Virginia, Franklin Session looks like a superstar in the making while Jared Sullinger fails to live up the hype of his signing. The two teams have already played each other twice for the season with Norfolk taking both games by scores of 60-53 and 61-59.

Jason Richardson and Ty Lawson are the other two players gunning for MVP at the season's midpoint. Richardson has been a scoring machine for Pebble Beach but lacks Iso Joe's defensive and rebounding chops. Lawson hasn't had the same scoring numbers as Johnson and Richardson but has high efficiency numbers and assist totals. However, J-Rich and Lawson's stellar years will surely fall short at this pace as Johnson remains the frontrunner for the league's best player of 2022.

OOC: I'm not gonna post every game throughout the seasons in here, it'll be way too big. I'll give a half-season update, full-season update, post-season update. Then awards, draft and free agency moves. Since the focus is on the league more than an individual team, we're gonna lose some minutiae
