Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

Tovarich: Welcome to once again, the only pre-season press conference. Yes, I fired whoever the old assistants were and yes, I hired some new ones. I don't know the old one's names and I don't know the new one's names, just in case anyone thought that was ever going to change.

I have released Tron Walter, he was a SG recruit and redshirted last year. He'll never see the court here.

Reporter: You said you planned on RS'ing your C recruit?

Tovarich: Turns out Suotamo is our best C. I had planned on RS'ing him and continuing with Shehan to start and Petrauskas on the B team. So now Suotamo will start. Shehan will RS, which I know will require some pep talks. Petrauskas is a SR so he'll still be the B team C. Shehan will be the B team C his final 2 seasons most likely.

Reporter: So what about the guards?

Tovarich: I think we'll start Galbreath at PG and move Stivers to SG and see if we can open him up more for some scoring. The PG doesn't get a lot of shots in our offense, so he might be better used elsewhere although his shooting was not as good last season as it was when he was a FR. If that experiment doesn't end up working, we'll move Stivers back to PG and Galbreath/Capel will both play on the B team.

Reporter: What is the focus in recruiting?

Tovarich: 3 scholarships, it'll be heavy on guards and a SF. Unless there's a great PF out there or an elite C we can somehow get, we'll stick to that.

Reporter: Coach, is it true to turned down power jobs again?

Tovarich: Yes, I turned down Texas Tech and Connecticut. I thought long and hard about Connecticut, but decided to wait for a different opportunity in the future.

Tovarich: Obviously a bit of a gulf in talent there, but I guess one of those regional games you should play occasionally.

Reporter: Did you learn anything about your team from that?

Tovarich: Always. Hopefully Stivers just had a bad night from outside and that'll get better, or we need a new plan. There are some FT motions that need to be adjusted because they're just bizarre. We got outrebounded so that's going to continue to be a problem. I think Blankenship couldn't make a shot from less than 15 feet if his life depended on it. Jack and Pawlak broke the press well and finished relatively well. Pawlak is supposed to be a decent 3 point shooter, so the B team could have lots of options if I have a PF that can shoot from the outside, but we didn't get to see any of that today.

Reporter: So what are your expectations for the season?

Tovarich: See how we stack up against a bunch of power opponents and I expect to win the Sun Belt again and we'll give it a try in the NCAA tournament again.

Tovarich: No idea how we won against their 66% shooting and their 9/13 shooting on 3's. We didn't force all that many turnovers. The press was ineffective against their SR PG. Luckily they don't have much of a bench I guess. We didn't rebound all that well. I guess we just accumulated more 3's and more FT's than them although 4 of those FT's were at the end when they were fouling. It's kind of a hard win to explain. Luckily they weren't shooting 3's in the second half like they first. 7/8 at halftime and just 1/5 in the second, but they made everything else it seemed. Great win, but I can't entirely explain how it happened other than we shot enough 3's to overcome it. Thank you Stivers.

Reporter: This is the highest ranked team you've ever beaten, is that your biggest win ever?

Tovarich: I guess the rankings say so, but we're better than them on paper and we were at home. We'll see. It's looking like none of the people I scheduled are panning out again as I see no one on our schedule that's rated higher than us and LSU was the only ranked one. I see we can get Illinois in a tournament here who are rated higher but unranked somehow.

Reporter: What was their press strategy? It wasn't constant, but it was more than just here and there.

Tovarich: That was confusing for me too. They weren't on full blown full court press or we'd have seen it after every score, but when coaches say occasionally it's like 10% of the time maybe. It was like 50-50 with them. I don't know what the rhyme or reason was, but considering how little faith they have in their bench, that doesn't seem wise to me.

Reporter: Will the upcoming CBE Classic be a disappointment if you only end up playing the 2 games?

Tovarich: Probably. More disappointing is Illinois is the best team we may see all season and they're not even ranked, so the benefit of playing them doesn't seem to be there. I don't see how Savannah State's going to beat them, so we'll get a good neutral court test, but indeed, I didn't sign up to just play 2 games. I want more elite opponents in the last two games there, but we'll have to earn those for sure.

Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

I was going to pause for a while after the last season ended but I still had the urge to go for a few more. Between burnout from all the games and college basketball season wrapping up, it's time for a hiatus until the fall. I'll check in on everyone else still going here and there though.

Tovarich: We came out pretty rusty after that long lay off. Good thing we were playing a team that also looked pretty rusty.

Reporter: What are you talking about coach? You just played LSU six days ago.

Tovarich: I don't know, man. That felt like 8 months. I don't know if I went into a coma or something, but that felt like forever ago. I was trying to remember who some of the guys on the bench even were and what they were good at and such.

Reporter: Your FR Suotamo rebounded well and you out-rebounded the opponent. Do you think you're making some progress there?

Tovarich: I doubt it. If we can't outrebound Charleston Southern, then there's just like no hope for that, ever. He scored well too. We were trying to remember how to play basketball, and against the man defense, it seemed like he had an advantage. We didn't shoot well from 3 in the first half, so we had to keep the gameplan simple until we got back into the swing of things.

Reporter: Uhhh, ok, coach, so that "8 month layoff" that caused this rust, do you think you knocked it off for, probably Illinois tomorrow?

Tovarich: We'll see. I think by the end of the game we were back in some rhythm with the subs and the defensive alignments and who can shoot and who can't, etc. Luckily we got pressed a little which was good to remember how to break. We maybe should have used some ourselves, but it never felt necessary. I assume we'll need it tomorrow though.
