Panthers Get Outplayed in Second Half, Fall by 10 to Iowa State

AMES, IA. - Northern Iowa had a lot of momentum after winning their last two games at the Orange County Shootout. All that momentum flew out the window in Ames, however, as the Iowa State Cyclones handled the Panthers in the second half, and finally winning 61-51.

Offensively, the Panthers were a no-show. No one stepped up and knocked down open jumpers, and no one decided to put the team on their back, and lead an offensive charge. The only reason Northern Iowa kept it close in the second half was due to the play of backup point guard Johnny Moran, who scored 13 points in only 12 minutes of floor time.

For Iowa State, the formula was simple. Attack Northern Iowa's weak transition defense, and you'll be successful. They did that in the second half, which made the difference after the 27-27 tie at halftime.

The Cyclones were led by Jamie Vanderbeken with 12 points, while Laron Dendy finished with 11.

SCORING SUMMARY

UNI - 27 24 51
ISU - 27 34 61

INDIVIDUAL STATS

Northern Iowa

Johnny Moran (PG) - 13 points, 3-5 3PT
Jordan Eglseder (C) - 10 points, 8 rebs.
Kwadzo Ahelegbe (PG) - 8 points
Marc Sonnen (SG) - 6 points
Kerwin Dunham (SG) - 6 points
Adam Rodenberg (PF) - 5 points
Ali Farokhmanesh (SG) - 2 points
Lucas O'Rear (PF) - 1 point

Iowa State

Jamie Vanderbeken (C) - 12 points, 10 rebs.
Laron Dendy (PF) - 11 points
Craig Brackins (PF) - 10 points, 16 rebs.
Chris Colvin (PG) - 10 points, 7 asts.
Lucica Staiger (SG) - 8 points
Antwon Oliver (SG) - 5 points
Diante Garrett (PG) - 3 points
Dominque Buckley (PG) - 2 points

TEAM STATS OF NOTE

FG

Northern Iowa - 18/51 (35%)
Iowa State - 26/50 (52%)

REB

Northern Iowa - 27
Iowa State - 42

RECORDS

Northern Iowa 4-3
Iowa State 4-1

Coach's Notes:

- Easily the worst game of the season overall. Even though it was only a ten point loss, it felt like a lot more than that. We missed a TON of wide open shots. That's disappointing.

- Farokhmanesh was terrible. After that 24-point performance against San Diego, I thought he had turned the corner. He was a complete non-factor in this one. It may be time to start looking at some changes, as he or Adam Koch hasn't done much to deserve being in there.

- Signing period starts on December 2. That was not the kind of game we wanted our recruits seeing.

That loss was tough, but we've got to move past it. We actually get a home game for the first time in a while, with Loyola (IL) coming to town. Would be a nice win the day before signing period begins.

Surprised to see Chattanooga win the Orange Country Shootout. At least you lost to the Champs.

Tough loss to Iowa State. You hung with them in the 1st half. Do you plan on making Iowa State and Iowa yearly games well at Northern?? If so hopefully you can get your revenge next year.

Yeah man, Chattanooga seems to always fair well. I've tried a few seasons with other teams, and I've noticed that they always have a 25-4 or 24-5 type record. They're tough.

And yeah, I definitely plan on playing the Iowa schools each year. I'll get the Cyclones at home next year, so we'll see what we can do there. Getting ready to play Iowa here in a little bit.

Northern Iowa Gets Offense Going Early, Hangs On For 8-Point Win over Loyola (IL)

CEDAR FALLS, IA. - After a disappointing loss at Iowa State on Tuesday, Northern Iowa bounced back with a solid home victory against Loyola (IL), and walked out with a 69-61 victory.

There wasn't really a play or series of plays that changed the complexion of this game. The Panthers took an early lead, and stayed the course the rest of the way, and picked up their fifth win of the year in the process.

After an abysmal outing against Iowa State, Ali Farokhmanesh led the Panthers with 17 points, while Jordan Egleseder added 11.

Loyola was led by Walt Gibler, who picked up the double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

SCORING SUMMARY

UNI - 39 30 69
LOY - 33 28 61

Aric Van Weelden (SG) - 6 points
Andy Polka (PF) - 6 points
Matt Adler (C) - 2 points, 9 rebs.

TEAM STATS OF NOTE

Northern Iowa - 4/18
Loyola (IL) - 8/28

REB

Northern Iowa - 38
Loyola (IL) - 29

RECORDS

Northern Iowa 5-3
Loyola (IL) 3-2

Coach's Notes:

- Really not a whole lot to say about this game. It was one of those games that really doesn't have many interesting moments. It was just gaining a lead, and keeping it until the end.

- Farokhmanesh looked a lot better. As did Koch. I'm still thinking of moving Koch out of the starting lineup, and possibly inserting Dunham, just so that we have another three point threat on the floor.

Good win, and now we get ready for another in-state rival in Iowa.

Panthers Pull Off Miracle Comeback, Rally From 29 Down to Knock Off Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, IA. - Wow. That's really all you can say about the epic showdown between Northern Iowa and Iowa tonight, as the Hawkeyes held a 29-point lead in the first half before seeing the Panthers play their best basketball of the season, and capping off an amazing comeback with a 73-65 win.

Iowa could simply not be stopped in the first half. They scored at will, mostly thanks to the 11 first half turnovers by the Panthers. Towards the end of the first half, the Panthers' coach sat most of his starters, and the bench players were able to trim the once 29-point margin down to 23, trailing 49-26 at the half.

But it was all about defense in the second half, as the Panthers played straight up man-to-man defense, and completely shut down the Hawkeye attack. It wasn't that the Panthers forced a lot of turnovers. They just played solid defense, and capped it off with a defensive rebound. Most fans stated that it was the best they'd ever seen a Northern Iowa team play defensively. And it would be hard to argue that claim.

It was a total team effort in the final stanza, as the Panthers had five players finish in double-figures. But it was the career-high 14 points by the newest member to the starting lineup, Kerwin Dunham, that gave this team the spark that it needed late in the game. And Jordan Egleseder's layup and the foul with 1:24 remaining gave Northern Iowa their largest lead of the half up until that point, as they took a 63-60 advantage.

Egleseder finished with yet another double-double, scoring 13 points and adding 13 rebounds. Iowa was led by Matt Galens with 14 points.

SCORING SUMMARY

UNI - 26 47 73
IOWA - 49 16 65

INDIVIDUAL STATS

Northern Iowa

Kerwin Dunham (SG) - 14 points, 6-11 FG, 3-8 3PT

Adam Rodenberg (PF) - 4 points
Adam Koch (SF) - 2 points, 8 rebs.
Johnny Moran (PG) - 1 point

Iowa

Matt Galens (SF) - 14 points
Jeff Peterson (PG) - 11 points, 7 asts.
Jake Kelly (SG) - 11 points

Jermain Davis (SG) - 5 points
Jerryo Cole (PF) - 4 points

Devon Archie (PF) - 2 points, 6 rebs.

TEAM STATS OF NOTE

3PT

Northern Iowa - 8/22
Iowa - 8/19

REB

Northern Iowa - 38
Loyola (IL) - 25

FT

Northern Iowa - 16/26
Iowa - 6/10

TO

Northern Iowa - 14
Iowa - 6

RECORDS

Northern Iowa 6-3
Iowa 6-4

Coach's Notes:

- I was ready to get rid of half my team in the first half. Probably the worst half I've ever played. But, probably the best half I've played in the second half. Just an amazing game.

- Egleseder really set the tone in the second half, as he just dominated the boards. We gave them a lot of second chance opportunities in the first half, but the big man made sure that didn't happen in the second half.

- Again, I can't express in words how bad that first half was. We turned it over every time we touched it. But our straight up man defense in the second half was a thing of beauty. Every shot was contested, and it felt great.

An absolutely huge win to get us to 6-3 on the season, with two straight games coming up against Cleveland St. and Morehead St. that are very winnable.
