Rematch with Bulldogs

WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS

(6-1) @ (6-1)

GAME PREVIEW

The Zags enter the game coming off a 61-68 loss to Butler in the Championship Game of the Great Alaska Shootout. However they have won 9 of the past 11 meetings with the Cougar's including the blowout win (93-67) over WSU this season in the opening round of the G.A.S. The Cougars enter the game having won 4 straight since the loss and look to hand the Bulldogs just their 4th loss inside the Kennell since 2004 (Gonzaga is 64-3)

THE GAME

The Bulldogs would be playing the game without their floor captain and leading scorer M. Bouldin (sprained ankle), but that wouldn't stop them from coming out strong in the 1st half behind a solid performance from S. Gray-13 pts 3/4 3pt and they would take a 42-40 lead into the locker room.

In the 2nd half M. Capers would move into the starting lineup and draw the defensive assignment of covering Gray. With Gray under wraps, Bouldin out of the game and FR E. Harris on the bench with 3 fouls, Gonzaga would struggle to find anyone who could put the ball in the hoop. WSU on the other hand would get a career night from SO D. Castro as the Cougs outscored the Zags 41-28 to pull off the huge upset win and get their revenge. FINAL SCORE WSU-81 GONZAGA-70

KEY PLAYERS

Coach Dezaron "I am very proud of DC tonight. He played amazing. He told me of his goal of avg a double double for the season and he since then he has done it 2 games in a row. We needed it tonight with Klay in a shooting slump and defenses really keying on him."

Weekly Talk Show

Good Evening and Welcome to another edition of Butch's Beat. Tonight I am joined by our Freshman PG. X. Thames and R. Moore. Guy's thanks for taking the time to come in and talk to me.

XT/RM-No problem Butch. Klay and DC told us your a funny cat.

-I have to know. Mostly when two players come in the same recruiting class that play the same posistion a little rivalary can form. Is that how it is with you guys.

XT- Well I can't speak for Reggie but for me I know having someone like him to play against in practice has definetly made me a better player and because of that he has become one of my best friends.

RM- Yeah its the same for me. X and I have different games. He is more of a true PG and doesn't have much of a outside shot I try very had to style my game alot like my cousin Aaron Brooks (former Oregon Duck current Houston Rocket)
and I love knocking down huge 3's.

Reggie speaking of Brooks. Did he try and get you to go to Oregon?

RM-Not at all. Growing up in Seattle it was always my dream to play for the Huskies, but Coach Romar gave my scholly to Abdul Gaddy after he backed out of his committment to USC, so I was left with Fresno State (orginally committed to as a Junior) and Santa Clara. I wanted to stay close to home, and Aaron just told me to do that and if I was to stay in the Pac-10 thats all that mattered.

Xaiver. How did you end up at WSU?

XT- My dad went to school here. I had scholarship offers to Iowa State,UNLV, and San Diego State, but in the end I just loved the idea of play for Coach Bennett and playing in the Pac-10.. I am glad I stuck it out with Coach Dez because he has really challenged me to step up my offensive game. (Avg over 10 ppg the last 4 games)

- Last question guys. Which teammate has surprised you most.

XT/RM-Without a doubt its Big Nick. The guy doesn't say much off the court or in the locker room, but as soon as you step on the court his mouth is running a mile a minute. He has alot of expierence playing in this style of offense and has been a great leader for us on the floor.

Okay well thats all for tonight. Join us next time as I sit down and talk with Senior Nick Koprivica.

Yeah that was a huge win for us. The fact that Coach Bone led Portland State into the Kennell last year and won (1 of their 3 losses) is a big reason why WSU hired him. So for Coach Dezaron to pull of the feat was huge. I didn't put it in my write up but the win propelled me into the Top-25.

Re: Washington State Cougars-A New Era is Born

After playing 5 straight games on the road with wins over Texas Tech,Michigan,UNLV and Gonzaga. The Wasington State Cougars have got the eye of the National Media. With a (7-1) record the Cougars are now ranked #19 in the latest Media Poll.

Coach Dezaron "Its great when I took over the program I know alot of fans and basketball experts where probably going who??? So for us to play this well and to already earn a spot in the Top-25 is a huge boost not only to me and my resume but for the players as well."

The Cougar's would return home to a packed crowd at Friel Court inside the Beasley Coliseum to take on the (3-4) Portland State Vikings.

WSU would come out and play one of their best halves of basketball scoring 44 points and holding the Vikings to a season low 16 points!!! in the 1st half. In the 2nd half Coach Dezaron would call off the Defensive Dogs as the Cougar's cruised to the 40pt win. FINAL SCORE WSU-81 PSU-41

KEY PLAYERS

(Roster note. Koprivica started at PF tonight and R. Moore at SG with Waton moving to the bench)

K. Thompson-25 pts 5/9 3pt
X. Thames-10 pts 4 reb 3 asst 5 stls 2/3 3pt
R. Moore-7 pts 5 asst 2/3 3pt
N. Koprivica-5 pts 8 reb 9 asst 1/4 3pt
D. Castro-12 pts 4 reb 1 blk

W. Wright-17 pts 12 reb 2/3 3pt

Coach Dezaron "I was very pleased with the results. I wanted to try something different with the starting lineup and I like it so far. FR A. Brown and SO M. Capers will have to step up and fill in at the point but overall I like having Moore playing with the starting group and Watson coming off the bench will give us someone who can rebound and will allow us to use him in the offense more as well"

The Cougars followed up their home win with another home game against (3-4) Montana. Once again a huge 1st half would propel the Coug's to victory. Leading 42-27 Coach Dezaron pulled most of his starters for much of the 2nd half. Montana would respond by outscoring the 2nd team (33-26) but couldn't over come the 15 point deficit. FINAL SCORE WSU-68 MONTANA-60

KEY PLAYERS

K. Thompson-12 pts 3 asst 2/8 3pt
D. Castro-17 pts 9 reb
