Key games dot schedule for UMES
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore announced their schedule today, which could be the keys to the season. Early on, the Hawks will be tested against Dabel’s alma mater, Savannah State. Shortly after, they play in the Jackpot Challenge, and will also appear in the UCF New Year’s Jamboree. They play major conference game against Iowa and Nebraska.

Dabel speaks before coaching opener
“ I expect to see a nice crowd out at our first game against Savannah State. They got a nice team but as long as we have good fundamentals we should pull out a win. It is my alma mater so I have some extra incentive to win.” We have to agree that this should be a UMES win, we predict 57-44.

The Dabel era opens up with a bang; does he get a win?
If Colby Dabel wanted an easy victory, he didn’t get one tonight against Savannah State. Early on, it looked like he might have a early season loss as they trailed at the half 27-21. Most of the fans in attendance were not happy, either booing or not making any noise. However, Dabel did something at halftime to make his team fired up, as their defense clamped down, yielding only 16 points in the 2nd half. UMES came out on fire, up 5 at one point, with around 2 minutes left. However, Savannah State reclaimed the lead later around one minute. They would finish it out though claming a 44-43 victory against Dabel’s alma mater. Sophomore Rod Mitchell led the Tigers with 14 points, while senior Release Coleman came up with 4 steals.

Dabel: “I told him he needs to get a few more pieces and he’ll have that program off the ground. You got to remember it’s a very tough job to win in.”

Hawks play another defensive battle, this time in the 30’s
The Hawks played a tougher team tonight against Stony Brook, but they came out and did work. Early on UMES jumped out to a 18-13 lead in a defensive struggle. Neither team was able to do much better in the second half. Freshman Roland Dunston picked up 9 points in his second career game, most in the second half, heading up the Hawks at home. Stony Brook had 2 players with more than that, as both Michael Tyree and Nick Carter picked up 10 points. Despite Stony Brook outscoring Eastern Shore 24-21 in the second half, Dabel improved to 2-0 in a 39-37 victory.

Hawkeyes maul Hawks, rise to 3-1
On paper, this was a blowout. On the court, this was a blowout. Iowa came out and demolished UMES, holding the Hawks to only 28 points. The Hawkeyes forced 12 turnovers, and turned on the accelerator, with 27 points in the 1st half. They outscore the Hawks by only 5 in the second half onroute to a 49-28 victory. Guard Jeff Peterson scored 21 points and 5 assists, while forward J.R. Angle chipped in 17 points. Marc Davis turned the ball over 6 times in the loss.

After the game Coach Dabel refused to talk to reporters and reportedly yelled at his team for 15 minutes.

Brackets for South Padre Invitational announced
Today South Padre announced the 4 teams participating in their tournament. Austin Peay, Florida Gulf Coast, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Valparaiso will all participate. UMES and Valpo will play in the early game, and Austin Peay verse FGCU is the late game. The winners will play in the championship, and the losers play in the consolation. Austin Peay is undefeated thus far, while Valpo is one of the top teams in the Horizon so look for them to match up in the title.

Opener is South Padre Tournament a shooter’s delight
The Hawks came into this game with a chip on their shoulder. They left with a newly found star. Junior Ed Tyson put up 31 points, and UMES took out Valparaiso 61-54. Tyson went 7-10 from 3 point range in Dabel’s new freewheeling offense, and Valpo’s defense couldn’t handle it. Valparaiso’s duo of Haanpa and Igbaubau scored 18 and 16, respectively, but it wouldn’t be enough. The Hawks jumped out to a 6 point lead after the first half, and never looked back. Davis only turned the ball over once after a 6 turnover performance. With the win UMES is now 3-1.

Championship decided in South Padre Invitational
The 4-0 Austin Peay Governors walked into this tournament with a mission and ended it with the championship trophy. The Govenors got up 10 in the first half and never looked back, on route to a 57-46 victory. Senior shooting guard Todd Babbington came up huge, with 23 points for Austin Peay. Point guard Derek Wright had a double double, picking up 15 points and 12 assists. Ed Tyson led the way for the now 3-2 Hawks, with 26 points and 5 rebounds.

Dabel: “Obviously being outrebounded is not good, but it was more because we missed more frequently then they did. I got to go, got a flight to catch with a game tomorrow.

Hawks have jet-lag, can they still pick up a W?
Florida Gulf Coast fought very hard in this game, and carried a small lead with only a minute to play. However, some clutch Ed Tyson shooting carried the Hawks to a 55-50 victory. Tyson, however, only played 13 minutes in the 20 minute game and it affected the Hawks greatly. 3 fouls came in the 1st half led to UMES losing a lead late in the game. However, Tyson tied it up, and after a missed FGCU shot, UMES scored again. Free throws later and then it was a game over. Tyson led the team with his 21 points.

Hawks battle at home verse Hornets
The Delaware State Hornets had a simple game plan: stop prolific scorer Ed Tyson. Tyson put up 16 points, but shot 6-17, including 2-8 from 3. The Hawks lacked other scoring options, and the Hornets cruised to 52-42 victory. The Hornets would deny Tyson the ball every time down the court, and the Hawks had to turn to other options. Marc Davis struggled to make up for it, going only 2-7. The Hornets took a 29-20 lead in the first half, and outscored the Hawks 23-22 in the second half as well behind Matt Washington’s 28 points on 12-15 shooting. The Hawks fall to 4-3 (0-1) on the year, while Delaware State improves to 2-6 (1-0).

Early season signing period bears fruit for Hawks
Colby Dabel and his staff hit the trail hard this year, and it landed the Hawks 6-9 small forward R.J. Olson. Olson, who didn’t participate in the ABL, is more of a dunker than anything else. However, Colby Dabel believes he’ll provide much needed post help for UMES. “We looked for size during recruiting and I think we found it in R.J. He’s not a great offensive player, but he can definitely D it up for us.” It is reported the Hawks have also offered **’s SG Randy Massie, SF Dedric Demanby, SF Cyril Van De Laar, and SG Leslie Riley.

Hytche hosts a blowout
1-5 Kennessaw State was looking for a win. They wouldn’t get one. The Owls got their lunch handed to them in a 54-37 defeat. The Owls now are 1-6. Ryan Doughtery, a sophomore, was the lone bright spot with 17 points. The Hawks played well coming off a loss, as Ed Tyson got 16 points and 4 rebounds on 7-14 shooting to lead UMES. This game was decided in the 1st half and never came close, as Dabel’s crew lead 35-21 at the half.
