Aggies Drop 2nd Straight Game

UC Davis (9-5) @ Long Beach State (10-4)

January 12, 2008

Long Beach, CA - UC Davis dropped its second straight game on the road when they traveled to Long Beach State. The Aggies were in the game late until the 49ers went on a 10-0 run with under 5 minutes to go to put the game away. Long Beach won the game 81-73. The Aggies allowed yet another huge game from the opposing team's star player, this time to Junior guard Donovan Morris, who scored 29 points and shot 11-17 from the field. UC Davis wasn't short of offense in this game, however, having four players scoring double-digits. They were led by Vince Oliver with 16 points and Dominic Calegari with 14 points.

Coach Campbell commented about his teams' production, "We know our offense will be there to keep us in the game. We just have to start playing defense. This is the second straight game that we could have had a chance to win the game if we would just defend. We have to get out on three-point shooters. This isn't the way we wanted to start conference play, but we're a young team and its a young season, so its a work in progress. We can't just turn it around overnight."

UC Davis drops to 9-6 and the 49ers prevent Coach Campbell from getting his 10th career win. Next up for the Aggies is a two game home stand against UC Irvine (5-8, 1-1) and Cal State Fullerton (6-8, 1-3)

Re: Aggies Drop 2nd Straight Game

Tough loss, but you should be able to get the next two games and get your 10th and 11th career wins.

Aggies Switch It Up, Get Win

UC Irvine (5-9) @ UC Davis (9-6)

January 17, 2008

Davis, CA - UC Davis came into this game on a 2-game losing streak, so Coach Campbell decided to change the starting lineup for the 1st time this year. Dominic Calegari got the start in place of Micheal Boone and Calegari proved that he belongs in the starting lineup by scoring 12 points and grabbing a season-high 12 rebounds in a 69-51 win at home. Both teams struggled to make shots early and UC Irvine took an early 7 point lead, but the Aggies ended the 1st half on a 20-3 run and led 37-27. UC Davis only allowed 24 second half points, their defense stepped up and UC Irvine only shot 29% from the field in the game. UC Davis also dominated the boards by grabbing 49 rebounds and 15 offensive rebounds.

"I thought a change in the lineup would give us a bit of a spark on both ends of the court, and I thought that Dominic earned a shot to start," said Coach Campbell. "Our focus on defense helped out tremendously. If we can play defense more consistently like this, we won't have to score 80-90 points to try to win a game. We also played well on the boards, especially offensively, and our bench scored points for us again. This is a good step in the right direction for us. Now we have build on this game and get ready for the next one."

With the win, UC Davis improves to 10-6 and 2-2 in conference play. They host Cal State Fullerton (6-9, 1-4) next.

Aggies Lose Heartbreaker

CS Fullerton (6-9) @ UC Davis (10-6)

January 19, 2008

Davis, CA - UC Davis lost as tough a game today as they would all season against the Titans of Cal State Fullerton, 104-101. Oliver had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds but just missed as time expired. UC Davis made a big comeback after being down 55-47 at half, allowing three Titans in double figures and also allowing 8 threes. Both Vince Oliver and Jesse Lopez-Low had career-high games in points; Oliver with 33 points and Lopez-Low with 21 points. UC Davis, a primarily Man-to-Man defensive team, started the game in a 1-3-1 defense which caused some early turnovers and confused the Titans. "We knew coming in the scouting report on us and what we do on defense. We also thought that it would create some turnovers and get us into an early rhythm and it did," said Coach Campbell. "This was a really tough loss for us because of how well we fought to get back in it. It's never easy to take a loss like this, but we can't let it affect our game moving forward. We get another shot at 'em at the end of the season, and we'll be ready."

UC Davis drops to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play. They travel to visit Cal Poly (9-6, 3-2) next.

Nice win!

Wow I would've liked to watch your game against CS Fullerton in real life, to bad you couldn't win that one.

Aggies Confuse Mustangs

UC Davis (10-7) @ Cal Poly (9-6)

January 24, 2008

San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Davis Aggies strayed away from their traditional man-to-man defense and it payed dividends against the Cal Poly Mustangs, 88-71. UC Davis got off to a fast start thanks to Jesse Lopez-Low and Vince Oliver getting to the line early and often. The Aggies defense forced some early turnovers and they jumped out to a 20-point lead at the half, 55-35. The second half was more of a battle, however, as the Mustangs started getting themselves back into the game with defense and the solid play from Junior guard Jonathan Biggs, who finished with a season-high 17 points.

The Aggies got yet another solid performance from Lopez-Low with 16 points and 6 rebounds. "Jesse's been playing well so far in conference play and tonight was no different. I think our guys took the loss to Fullerton to heart and they really came out strong on both ends tonight. That's something we need to continue to strive for: consistency at both ends," said Coach Campbell. "We decided to throw something different at them tonight. Something they haven't seen before yet. We're not the best defensive team, so we have to make up for it by getting creative from time to time."

The win puts UC Davis in a 4-way tie for 2nd place in the Big West (11-7, 3-3), 2 games behind UC Santa Barbara (10-8, 5-1). The Aggies travel to play the Gauchos next.

Re: Career Coaching Legacy

Yea, I had to come back from about 15-20 points down and I had a chance at the end to tie. My defense just couldn't stop their scorers.
