Boston's, Now "Big Four", Primed and Ready for Another Title Run
Boston, MA -- Prior to the 2007-2008 season Boston made a pair of moves that sent shockwaves throughout the NBA, and would ultimately have a major impact on the landscape of the NBA. Boston acquired Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, to team up with Paul Pierce, to form Boston's "Big Three". Now, that Big Three has evolved into a "Big Four" due to the emergence of their star point guard, Rajon Rondo.
Two of the last three seasons Boston has made it to the NBA Finals. In the 2008 playoffs they defeated their arch-rival, the Los Angeles Lakers, in six games to take home the franchises' 17th NBA Title. Last season, Boston fell to the Lakers in seven games, and they are looking to set out for revenge this year. An injury to Kevin Garnett that caused him to miss the playoffs in 2009 may have been the only thing keeping us from three straight Boston vs. LA championship series.
Boston's "Big Three" knows they are running out of time. Garnet (34), Allen (35), and Pierce (33), are all towards the end of their careers and want to add one more ring to their collection.
"We know our good years are coming to an end, and if we want another ring, we've gotta get it soon. Some of these young bucks are going to start coming along and taking our place in the league. But we fee like we still have enough in us to win another title this year. I'm still not over how we lost in the finals last year, and you best believe we're looking to exact some revenge." -Paul Pierce
Boston made some key additions in the offseason to add to their frontcourt and backcourt depth. One of the players is another aging future Hall of Famer, Shaquille O'Neal. O'Neal (38 years old) is looking for his 5th ring, and is very excited about the aspect of playing alongside Boston's "Big Four".
"Just call me the 'Big Shamrock'. I'm not here to do anything other than be the 5th or 6th option alongside the great players they've already got in place. This is a great team and I'm just glad to be here. I think we can do great things this year." -Shaquille O'Neal
Boston brought back a former Celtic to add to their backcourt depth. Delonte West, who spent the last two seasons playing in Cleveland, has been brought back to Boston to give the Celtics a talented combo-guard in the backcourt.
Boston, Cleveland, Make Trade
Boston, MA -- Boston had acquired center Jermaine O'Neal in the offseason. However, the Celtics front office felt it would be best to shed one of the plethora of frontcourt players on the roster for a 1st round draft pick for the future, in order to get younger. Boston did just that, sending J. O'Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 2011 1st round pick and small-forward Jawad Williams.
"Look, we know we've got to start getting younger. This team is really good but also getting really old. We need to start making some moves to land younger players, and that's what we did. We don't need four centers and two power forwards who are good to be playing. Jermaine can go to Cleveland and be a starter or a key reserve for them. Here, he wasn't going to ever see the floor. We just made a move that we felt was best for our team's future."
-Celtics GM, Danny Ainge
