Re: Coaching Legacy of Joe Hargrove: A Controversial Return to the Bench

DePaul Enters Conference Tournament as Two Seed

DePaul is on the verge of having their best season in quite some time. Remarkably, a team that was picked to finish 14th in the Big East during the preseason, went 12-6 in conference play and finished in second place behind Georgetown. While DePaul does have their first NCAA tournament bid locked up for the first time since 2004, they would love to make some noise in the Big East tournament.

"Look, we didn't just come here to paint. We came here to win games. We are the two seed and earned the first round bye but now it's time to go out and try and win some games. Every game we win in this tournament improves our seeding in the big tournament."

DePaul will face the winner in the Louisville/South Florida game in the quarterfinals. The other three teams that received a first round bye were Georgetown, Pitt, and UConn; three perennial Big East powers.

Devin Hill has filled many roles for DePaul this year. The 6'9" sophomore has played three different positions this season and has filled many different roles. In yesterday's win over Louisville he was asked to provide a scoring spark off the bench as three of the DePaul starters were struggling to score. Hill did just that, delivering five made three point baskets and 19 points off the bench to rally DePaul past Louisville and into the semi-finals of the Big East tournament.

"Man, I was just feelin' it today, ya know? I knew everything was going in. It felt great. Gotta give it up for my teammates, though, they the reason I got those open looks. They found me and I just made the shot. No big. Gotta come out focused again tomorrow, though, and be ready to play. Syracuse is a good team. We can't be overlookin' anyone at this point."

It was the Dar Tucker and Jabari Currie show all game long. The two DePaul players put on a three point shooting clinic, combining to go 8/15 from three in the first half and 12/22 from three for the game. Tucker (34 points) and Currie (24 points) combined to score 58 of DePaul's 107 points in a 107-91 win over Syracuse in the semi-finals of the Big East tournament.

"Not enough can be said about how well Dar and Jabari played. We knew a key to winning this game was making three pointers against Syracuse's zone defense. I feel like we turned the ball over too much, but you can't fault the way the team played." Joe Hargrove

True freshman reserve center Kene Obi had a big game off the bench scoring 12 points on 5/6 shooting and grabbed four rebounds. The win sets up a finals match-up with Providence, a team DePaul beat 99-87 at Providence earlier in the season. The two teams aren't perennial powers in the Big East but it does perhaps give us a glimpse at two teams looking to break into that group. Providence (19-11) is coming off a 92-82 win over Marquette in the semi's and have won five straight games.

Blue Demons Close out Tourney With Thrilling One Point Win

New York City, NY (AP) -- Trailing 65-64 with just 0:14 left in the game there was little doubt who coach Hargrove called a play for. Coming out of the timeout everyone in the building knew the ball was going to Dar Tucker. And it did, but only for a brief second. Tucker came off a double screen with the ball out of bounds and received the pass. He hesitated for just a moment before making his move. Tucker took two dribbles to his left, crossed back over his left, and dipped his shoulder to get around his man. As he beat his man off the dribble a Providence defender slid over to help. Unfortunately for the Friars no one else on their team rotated and this left Devin Hill wide open on the block. Tucker dumped the pass off to Hill and Hill slammed it home to give DePaul a 66-65 victory. After finishing second to Georgetown in the regular season Big East race, DePaul clinched the Big East tournament crown.

"I wanted the ball and I was gonna take the shot, but when Devin's man helped off and they didn't rotate, I had to pass the ball. I mean, he was WIDE open!!"

Re: Coaching Legacy of Joe Hargrove: A Controversial Return to the Bench

DePaul's Season Ends in Elite Eight Run

Before the season expectations were not high. However, going into next season, with an Elite Eight run this year, fans will be coming out of the woodwork with high expectations next year. The DePaul Blue Demons had a magical season that ended in heartbreak at the hands of Purdue in the Elite Eight. After being tied 31-31 at the half, DePaul was just 20 minutes away from going to the school's first ever Final Four. Unfortunately, they could not keep pace with Purdue who had six players score in double figures, and won going away 74-61.

"Of course it hurt. We thought we could play with and beat anyone in the nation. And after UNLV go down in the second round the region was blown wide open. We felt at that time, it was ours to lose. You've go to credit Coach Painter and his team, though, they played a hell of a ballgame and were the better team that day." -Joe Hargrove

Dar Tucker, who was brilliant for DePaul all season long, scored 21 points in the defeat. When asked if he was going to return for his junior season, the All-Big East performer said, "I don't know right now. Right now I'm just going to reflect on a remarkable season. This loss is going to take some time to get over. I honestly can't say right now whether I'll be back tomorrow. I'll have to sit down and weigh my options with my family."

Things may not have ended how they wanted them to, but DePaul's coaches and players have to be very excited about the future of the program. With seven true freshmen and two sophomores, the future certainly is bright.

DePaul Recruiting Class Makes Splash

He's only been here one year but DePaul head coach Joe Hargrove has already made an enormous splash on the recruiting scene. Hargrove landed the nation's #3 class and signed eight players from the 2009 class. Highlighting the class is four players ranked in the top 100, including the #2 player overall, Marcus Carson. Carson, a 6'6" SG out of Glenview, IL decided to stay close to home instead of signing with one of the more elite programs in the nation.

"I don't know, but man, I had letters from everyone. North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Illinois, you name 'em, they offered me. But after I saw what coach Hargrove was doing at DePaul this season I became real interested. In the end I decided I could stay close to home and be a part of what coach Hargrove is building at DePaul. He's got something special going on there and I just want to be a part of it."
-Marcus Carson
The Blue Demons got some much needed frontcourt help, and they got it in a big package. Derek Singleton, 7'0" 235 pounds, is the 12th ranked center in the class and the 58th ranked player overall. Singleton, from Petersburg, Virginia, saw the opportunity to play right away for a rising program and couldn't resist.

"Man I saw what they did this year and saw they had almost no frontcourt depth and knew I could make an impact right away. They are bringing back almost everyone and I can be a part of that. I can go in there and play right away. In the end, it's all about getting to the next level for me, as soon as possible, and I think DePaul is the best place for me to do that. I can't wait to suit up for coach Hargrove next year. He's a great coach and I have a lot of respect for how he runs things."
-Derek Singleton

The eight man class addresses all the Blue Demon needs for next season and should provide them with the depth they need to make another run at a Big East championship and possibly a national championship.

"We've got some very special kids coming in with this class to go along with an already exceptional roster. I will set the bar high for the team next year and will not allow them to come up short. We have a chance to be real good and it will be my goal to help the team realize what they're capable of." -Joe Hargrove

Tough non-conference games this year, good luck I've been following by the way but didn't post until now.

Thanks. I had to make a brutal non-conference schedule for a couple of reasons. One, I won way too many games last year and I simmed all but two or three; and two, because after playing NBA 2K (only bball game I've played the last couple of years) this game just isn't that difficult in comparison, even on the hardest difficulty level. First game I played on varsity and was winning by 50 in the second half. Quit, restart, and played on the next level. I had a 30 point lead in the second half. Did it again on the hardest level and ended up winning by 20. I can't remember who I was playing but it was a ranked Big East team. I want more realistic results sim and playing, thus the brutal non-conference schedule.
