2010-2011 Season Preview
2010-2011 Season Preview
An unprecedented series of changes over the past six months has drastically changed the college basketball landscape. Rumors were rampant during the 2010 NCAA tournament that we would witness several schools switching leagues for one reason or another, but nothing was ever mentioned about a large-scale realignment process. The first domino fell when the ACC announced it was expanding to 14 teams and invited Charlotte and Richmond from the Atlantic Ten to join the league. A day later, Boston College announced that the Big East had offered it an outstanding deal to return to its former home. The ACC responded by adding South Florida. Days later, however, the flood gates opened when Big East commissioner John Marinatto announced during a surprise news conference that four of its members (Marquette, DePaul, Notre Dame, and Louisville) were leaving for the Big Ten, which had also added Nebraska from the Big 12. The additions of the four former Big East schools signaled the arrival of a true superconference, with one of the strongest leagues combining forces with four traditionally-stellar Big East programs.
There will certainly be a period of adjustment for fans and observers alike as we begin the new season. But it won't take long for the new alignment to start dishing out never-before-seen matchups as conference play begins in early January and continues through the first week of March. Let us delve into the best games, players, coaches, and matchups of the 2010-2011 NCAA Basketball season.
Games to Watch- Non Conference
November 16- #6 Duke @ #22 Purdue
-Perhaps the premiere game of the newly-coined ACC/Midwest Challenge. Blue Devils have repeat championship aspirations while Purdue will have to deal with the loss of Robbie Hummel to another ACL injury. Few teams are able to win at Mackey Arena
November 17- Xavier @ #9 Arizona
-Sean Miller's former team journeys to Tucson for an early resume-enhancing opportunity at the McKale Center
November 17- Minnesota @ #7 Florida
-Tubby Smith returns to a place he knows quite well from his UK days
November 21- Gonzaga @ New Mexico
-Two of the better teams on the west coast playing in a building that treats opponents like third-class citizens. Will have major implications come tournament time
November 22- #8 Pittsburgh vs. Kansas State (Orlando, FL)
-An outstanding opening game of the loaded Old Spice Classic between the Panthers and Wildcats, two teams who can take over games on the offensive glass. Rest of the field is excellent as well
November 23- #11 Louisville vs. BYU (Las Vegas)
-Tremendous matchup between sweet-shooting BYU, led by All-American candidate Jimmer Fredette, and the swarming Louisville press.
November 25- #9 @ Arizona @ Kansas
November 28- Missouri @ #4 Memphis
-Exceedingly high expectations for Josh Pastner's young team. They will be severely tested against the relentless Missouri pressure and the Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball
December 23- #10 Michigan State @ Temple
December 31- #6 Duke @ Michigan
-The second tough Midwest 16 road test for the Blue Devils, who will be playing their typically murderous non-conference slate in preparation for the ACC. Wolverines will likely need a marquee win or two prior to entering conference play
January 5- #11 Louisville @ #23 Kentucky
-Cardinals open Midwest 16 play against 10th ranked Michigan State four days before this annual Blue Grass slobberknocker. Both teams point to this game every year as one of the key dates on the calendar.
February 14- #14 Wisconsin @ #1 North Carolina
-A rare late-season non-conference matchup on Valentine's Day between ranked teams. Both teams have unanswered questions heading into the season but boast all-american players in SF Harrison Barnes (FR, UNC) and PF Jon Leuer (JR, Wisconsin)
