Re: The Legacy of Tony Block and the Cheyney Wolves (FBCB2)
Cheyney (8-2) @ Washington Adventist (5-9)
Takoma Park, MD - In their last non-conference game before heading into PSAC play the Cheyney Wolves got all they could handle from a pesky Washington Adventist team. The Wolves led by as much as 13 in the first half but were not able to put Pioneers away, Adventist closed the gap to 6 before the break. In the second half the Pioneers held the lead for much of the final 16 minutes and led 71-68 with 51 seconds to play. On the Wolves next possession Ahmad Kidd found Hoyt Newcomb on the right wing for the jumper that cut the lead to 71-70 with 41 seconds left. Cheyney coach Tony Block opted not to foul and play defense, luckily the Wolves were able to force a stop and got the ball back with 6 seconds left. Newcomb got the rebound and pushed the ball up the court before passing to Kidd from nearly the same spot and Kidd connected as time expired! Newcomb led the way for the Wolves with 25 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. Pat Shumate added 14 points and 7 rebounds. Ahmad Kidd struggled for most of the night, he was 2 of 8 from the field before hitting the game winner. Kidd finished with 6 points. Elsewhere in the PSAC Mercyhurst beat Dowling 64-35, Slippery Rock beat Urbana 65-63, and #20 East Stroudsburg beat NY Tech 85-72. The Wolves open conference play with a battle on the road against Clarion (8-2). Code:

Re: The Legacy of Tony Block and the Cheyney Wolves (FBCB2)
PSAC 2010 Season Preview
With the conference regular season just around the corner here is a look at what to expect in the conference. Eight teams begin conference play ranked in the Top 25 Poll led by #2 Edinboro. Edinboro has cruised through their non-conference schedule with an average winning margin of 32. The Fighting Scots are led by senior guard Brian Rivers, Rivers is averaging 25.5 points per game. Four others are averaging double figures - junior center Lance Evans (12.5p/10.9r/4.4b), junior guard Ronald Turner (12.2p), senior center Freddie Mack (11.4/9.1r/2.2b), and sophomore guard Larry Parker (11.3p). The West Chester Golden Rams are ranked #4 and undefeated with an average winning margin of 29. The Rams are led by junior guard Garland Brown, Brown is averaging 21 ppg, 7.1 rpg, and 5.0 apg. Three others are averaging double figures including senior forward Matthew Odom (18.7p/8.6r), senior forward Ira Harlow (15.3p/5.1r), and senior guard William Getz (10.6p/6.2a) off the bench. California (PA) is ranked #13 and 10-1 with their only loss against Bowie State. The Vulcans feature the country's 2nd highest scoring offense at 90 points per game. They are lead by senior center Silas Ali, Ali is averaging 16.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game. Senior forward Jamison Maldonado is having a breakout year with 19.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Junior guard Milo Begay is averaging 17 points per game and senior guard Douglas Webb is adding 11.5 points and 7 assists per game. Bloomsburg enters conference play ranked #14 and they are 11-1 after they were upset by Chestnut Hill. The Huskies feature a balanced attack with five players averaging double figures led by junior guard Eric Keck. Keck is averaging 15 points per game. Others in double figures are sophomore forward James Fishman (14p/5r/4a), junior forward Armando Moore (13p/10r), senior forward Amedee Battaille (12p/5r), and senior center Tony Baird (12p/10r/3b). East Stroudsburg is currently ranked #17 with a 9-2 record with their two losses coming against #1 Ark-Monticello and #21 Armstrong Atlantic, they have won 9 in a row. The Warriors are led by senior guard Gabriel Jones, Jones is averaging 22 points and 4 rebounds per game. Others to watch for are senior forward Arthur Abbott (13p/5r), senior forward Tony Milam (12p/5r) and junior guard Gary Charles (10p/7a). The Gannon Golden Knights enter conference play ranked #22 and 10-1 after losing their first game earlier this week to Salem International. The Golden Knights have the nation's most efficient offense, shooting 53% from the field and 45% from deep but they are also stout defensively holding opponents to 40% from the field. They feature a two man combo of senior guard Douglas Morrell (18p/7r) and junior guard Richard Cheek (18p). Rounding out their starting five are sophomore center Edmundo Schafer (10p/9r/3b), senior forward Kendrick Geiger (10p/6r/5a), and sophomore guard Bryon Owens (9p/5a/4r). The IUP Crimson Hawks are currently ranked #23 and 10-1 with their only loss being to Minnesota State. They have one of the nation's best defenses, holding opponents to just 57 points and 39% from the field. The Hawks aren't very deep and feature six players led by senior guard Christian Johnson (14p/5r). Also watch for junior center Chris Martel (14p/6r), senior forward Jeffrey Overby (11p/11r), junior guard Stefan Hammer (10p/4a), sophomore guard Lawrence Finnegan (10p/5r), and senior forward Ciriaco Martin (9p/9r). Cheyney enters conference play ranked #24 with a 9-2 record. The Wolves are led by junior guard Hoyt Newcomb with 22 points and 6 rebounds per contest. They also feature senior forward Pat Shumate (13p/7r), senior guard Thomas Martin (12p/5a/4r) and freshman forward Ahmad Kidd (9p). Slipper Rock enters conference play with a 9-2 record, they are known for crashing the glass on offense - averaging 15 offensive rebounds per contest and its a team effort with six players averaging over 5 rebounds a game. Senior guard Larry Savoy is their leader with 17 points and 6 rebounds per game. Also watch for junior guard Timothy Bennett (16p/5r/5a) and freshman forward Arthur Thames (13p/6r). The Clarion Golden Eagles also enter conference play with a 9-2 record. They rank eighth in the nation in blocked shots with 7 per game. They are led by junior guard Forest Ashe (18p/5r) and junior guard Dale Lorenz (12p/4r). Keep an eye on senior centers Daniel Silva (9p/6r) and Justin Herbert (8p/7r/2b). Lock Haven enters conference play with a 8-3 record, in their 3 losses they have lost by a total of 8 points. Junior forward John Mena leads the Eagles in scoring with 18.7 points per game. Sophomore guard Joe Southerland (15p/4r/3a) and junior forward Jonathan Lee (13p/7r) compliment Mena offensively. The Eagles are probably 1 year away from being a contender for the PSAC championship. Kutztown features a high flying offense on its way to a 7-4 start. The Golden Eagles have a very balanced attacked led by senior forward Harry Montez (16p/11r). They have three other starters averaging double figures in junior guard Eldridge Wofford (12p/5r), junior center Lemuel Ortiz (11p/8r), and junior forward Armin Amberger (11p/5r). The Shippensburg Raiders are led by senior center Grover Lafferty (15p/7r), senior forward Chris Smith (13p/6r), and freshman guard Gavin Johnson (12p/4r). The Raiders are 7-4 heading into conference play. Millersville is led by a trio of scorers that is led by freshman guard John Dempsey (15p/4r/4a). Senior forward Bret Parks (15p/8r) and senior forward Carey Powter (14p/5r) make for a tough to defend front line. Look for the Marauders to give teams fits due to their tough interior play. The Mansfield Mountaineers are perhaps a year away from getting back into the NCAA Tournament, the Mountaineers enter conference play at 5-6. They are led by sixth man junior guard Terrence Howard (15p/4r), senior forward Kester Stagle (14p), and junior guard Steven Root (12p/6r). The Mountaineers are the 3rd best in the country at not turning the ball over with 9.5 turnovers per game. The Lakers of Mercyhurst have only made it to one NCAA Tournament in its history and this year looks to be no different as the Lakers have struggled to a 4-7 start heading into the conference season. They are averaging only 59 points per game which ranks 264th in the nation. Senior guard James Herrera (13p) is easily their best player. Last edited by grismosw; 02-08-2011 at 08:39 PM. |
