Re: The Journey of Shea Mengel (CH2k8)

AD John Swisher: I would like to get everyone's attention. I know this may come as a shock to you all, but we have been searching to replace our head basketball coach after a very disappointing season last year. As a result we have scoured the country to find a great replacement.

AD John Swisher: With no further delay I want to introduce Shea Mengel as the new Head Coach at Lafayette College. Shea comes to us with no head coaching experience, and just quit his job at a pharmaceutical company to take this job. I think his passion and enthusiasm will be a great asset. He should lead this program in a new direction.

Shea Mengel: Thank you all for having me. This is a great opportunity to coach at the Division 1 level. While I don't have a lot of experience my passion for basketball and the development of young men is great. A few days ago I wasn't very familiar with Lafayette, but growing up in nearby Wisconsin, there aren't too many differences in the type of people that are involved in this community.

I grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from pharmacy school. I applied for the head coaching position a week ago on a whim. I have a passion for basketball and at 24 years old I am looking forward to the opportunity to get that started out right. I can always return to pharmacy at another time, but my basketball clock is ticking. I look forward to getting this program off to a great start.

Reporter: Having grown up in Wisconsin, do you have a lot of connections there or where you went to college?

Shea Mengel: I do have a few connections in both places. I went to college in Indiana and that, as you know, is a basketball hotbed. The passion for basketball there is immense. Therefore I will focus most of my time in the midwest, but I will also venture out into the northeast or whereever there is talent that fits my system.

Reporter: What type of style are you going to play?

Shea Mengel: Well that is a great question. I haven't had a chance to analyze the tape from last year or meet with the players yet. However, I think the players will dictate that. One thing we will strive for is defensive prowess. Our offensive style might vary, but on defense we want to play shut down basketball.

I would like to introduce my assistants at this time.

My first assistant is Richie Cuffe. He is a 30 year old native of Wisconsin as well and brings a great work eithic. He is very disciplined and will get the players to play well in practice and during the game. His specialty is big men.

My next assistant is Donny Andrew. Donny is 37 years old and grew up in New York. He is a former assistant at Stony Brook. Look for him to really connect with the recruits that we are trying to bring in and evaluate them well.

AD John Swisher: Thanks for being with us. We look forward to your presence at the games this season.

Re: The Journey of Shea Mengel (CH2k8)

2010-11 Roster Breakdown

Starters:

PG - #23 Tony Johnson (SO) 6'0" 175 lbs - Roanoke, VA - 63 Overall
"TJ is a solid point guard. He handles the ball the best on the team and can really dish it out to the open shooters (74 Pass). Shoots it decently from 3-point range (71). Very durable kid who won't get hurt easily (96 Durability), so he will be the rock of the team."

SG - #21 Jim Mower (JR) 6'3" 184 lbs - Clifton, NJ - 64 Overall
"Good shooter from 3-point range (77), but can also create his own shot off the dribble. Could split some time with Wheeler off the bench, but should see the majority of the time at SG due to his size. Some of the quickest hands on the team (73 Steal)."

SF - #20 Darion Benbow (SR) 6'7" 171 lbs - New York, NY - 66 Overall
"He has the most talent on the team (66 Overall), but struggles to put it all together. He struggles from 3-point range (69) for a top-flight small forward. Has good length and can finish at the rim (60 Dunk). Good rebounder for the SF position and will be a versatile piece for the Leopards if he an hit his outside shot."

PF - #34 Jared Mintz (SR) 6'8" 230 lbs - Vancouver, CA - 64 Overall
"A stretch power foward on offense. He will pull the 4-man for the opponent to the perimeter due to his 3-point shooting (71). Best finisher down low (82 Close, 67 Dunk). He is also key on defense with his blocking ability (62) and rebounding (69 OReb, 70 DReb)."

C - #54 Jake Kreuser (SR) 7'0" 255 lbs - Serbia - 57 Overall
"The big man down low. Although he isn't rated as high as some of the others on this team he will be very important. He is a big body down low and he can finish at the rim due to his height. Will provide a big advantage in league play with the lack of size in the Patriot League."

Reserves:

#12 Ben Wheeler (SR) 6'3" 185 lbs - New Haven, CT - 61 Overall
Best Outsider Shooter (85 3-point)

#33 Nick Petkovich (JR) 6'5" 200 lbs - Staten Island, NY - 62 Overall

#32 Rob Delaney (JR) 6'3" 200 lbs - Newark, NJ - 63 Overall

#3 Lez Smith (FR) 6'2" 175 lbs - Arlington Heights, IL - 63 Overall
Quickest guard on the team (87 Speed)

#24 Levi Giese (SO) 6'9" 210 lbs - Billings, MT - 62 Overall

#31 Ryan Willen (JR) 6'8" 205 lbs - Santa Ana, CA - 60 Overall

#4 Michael Gruner (SO) 6'1" 180 lbs - Baltimore, MD - 59 Overall
